All sorted & a 20 min walk to the Estacion. A little help from a local as our tickets wouldn't scan the security gate open.....pre booked seats & a pre made lunch. 90 min ride through the arid countryside. I can't beleive anything actually grows through summer....even now being autumn here. Sunflowers, cotton, maize, hay & plenty of olive trees...& the best tomatoes.....you're not going to hear the end of that! A few photos from the train window, to show how dry the land is. All set up in our new place. Top floor again.....very quiet. ... read more

April 24thand that special day that comes around for Gretchen has arrived, her birthday! And we have to spend part of it on the road south to a town near Cadiz called El Puerto de Santa Maria. They love their long place names in Spain and it’s often fun when you are trying to make them out in their abbreviated form on the signposts. Our apartment near Espartinas just outside of Seville has been a great place to stay and again we have had everything we wanted to make life easy and at a great Air BnB price. Maria Jose (not quite sure why she is Jose as we thought that was a man’s name) has been a lovely host and we have had good conversations with her and her English is very good. She has ... read more

So after being back in Tarifa for one night, I decided to move on and meet up with Laura as she had one more night in her accommodation. We decided that cadiz was a good idea. I found a hostel - El Boabab Hostel and booked for 3 nights. However this was outside Cadiz in Santa Maria but turned out to be a great location, only a 30 minute train ride to Cadiz and also had a nice beach too. Dave and I had our first night there without Laura and when we arrived there a lovely Spanish guy gave us a lift to our hostel (as we had not written down directions or did not have wifi). We chilled and went out for tapas at 12pm. The next day (25/05) we ventured out down to ... read more

I didn't really have enough to talk about for two individual blogs, so this is my experience of two of the biggest festivals in the Cadiz area. Carnaval is a worldwide tradition that mostly takes place in primarily Catholic countries in the lead-up to Lent. Carnaval de Cadiz is famous all over Spain, with people flocking to the city from as far away as Barcelona and beyond for the 10-day festival. Before we went to Grazalema for the first weekend, we saw the Carnaval kick-off in style at the Teatro Falla. The streets were full of people partying in costume, as inside the theatre, the finals of the singing competition were taking place. Groups train for the whole year to sing about politics, topics in the news, and everyday circumstances, all of which are original compositions ... read more

So back when I decided to become a TEFL teacher, I had planned to apply for jobs in South Korea, work there for a year, and then travel around South East Asia until the savings ran out. Of course, my plans had to change when I inadvertantly missed the application in November when the closing date was brought forward unexpectedly due to demand. I decided to apply for TEFL jobs in Europe, so I could still gain teaching experience, while I waited to see if a few last minute applications panned out for March 2012. They didn't, and I had to wait to apply for the next intake in August. Luckily by this stage at the end of December, I had two job offers to consider, one in the town of Pomigliano d'Arco, near Naples in ... read more

So, we are still at my cousin's house. Her house is beautiful!!! And so are her chillins but I mean they are cute little fat tan babies. If you know me you know brown babies are my FAVORITE!! For the Sauer relatives she has twins ad they are about 10 months old. Anyways... Our second day in MAdrid Caryn and I basically just ate. We had churros con chocolate. You dip them and they are not typical churros they didnt have cinnamon and sugar but they were obviously delicious with chocolate. We also ate paella which you are supposed to have with seafood BUT the pics showed them still having their heads so we just ate it with chicke. It was good but it was basically chicken and rice so you know. The next morning we ... read more

Our annual winter trip (Joe Hellawell, Andrew Whyte and Gerry last year and Joe, Andrew, Gerry and Mike Maybury this year) headed for the Sherry Triangle of Southern Spain. A cheap Ryanair flight to Jerez (last year we went to Lamezia in Southern Italy) and 4 days in nearby El Puerto de Santa Maria on the coast. We stayed in a restored 1700's aparthotel called Casa de Los Leones. A good choice as it was very clean, well kitted out, beautifully restored, and central to everything we needed. The trip started at Joe's house in London and we made the mistake of taking up Mike's generous offer of taking his car to the airport! It was a tiny, clapped out Peugeot which hadn't had any workable suspension in the last 10 years! We got approximately 30 ... read more

Well, I am now in El Puerto de Santa Maria which is south Spain near the water. I am getting a crash course in Spanish. Muy dificil! I took a bus from Avignon, France to the Marseilles airport to catch a 2100 flight to Madrid. From there I had to find my way to the hotel. Once I did find it, it was worth it! The hotel was a TRUE 4 star, with the biggest king size bed I have even seen and a bathtub!! Mind you all, I have been staying in places with small showers, so this was nice. The TV had FIVE channels in English. After being in France and nothing outside of Merci, and Au Revoir, could I understand. So, I am also happy to be in Spain, where I comprendo un ... read more

Today's the day I say goodbye to Spain, probably for a long time. It was my second trip here and I had a great time! It was very different from my first trip since I had already done a lot of the touristy stuff, and I didn't get a car this time (damn manual transmissions). I did a lot of relaxing and hanging out, especially in the beautiful Spanish sun! Today the weather is hot and gorgeous! (too bad I got a little too much sun yesterday or I'd be out there right now!) Last night we discovered a wonderful restaurant near the palace called Albahaca. They had decent Sangria and REALLY good food! The specialties of Andalucia (the southern region of Spain) are artichokes, asparagus, olives, and figs. 4 of my favorite foods! Drinks ... read more
