The Slovene lands were part of the Holy Roman Empire and Austria until 1918 when the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats in forming a new multinational state, renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. After World War II, Slovenia became a republic of the renewed Yugoslavia, which though Communist, distanced itself from Moscow's rule. Dissatisfied with the exercise of power by the majority Serbs, the Slovenes succeeded in establishing their independence in 1991 after a short 10-day war. Historical ties to Western Europe, a strong economy, and a stable democracy have assisted in Slovenia's transformation to a modern state. Slovenia acceded to both NATO and the EU in the spring of 2004. To be updated

I spent the morning trying to figure out how to trick someone in the office, but after all I became the victim. Pugy: The kitchen is not open today so there'll be no lunch. It's closed because of the rain. Mari: Oh, Ok... (I didn't even question how the rain could cause the kitchen to close!) ten minutes later (or was it before??) Mari: Pugy, did you trick someone yet? Pugy: Oh... Right, it's april 1st today... No, I didn't! Blah, I am always too late!! But we did eat lunch after all ;-) [View Full Entry]

www.justgiving.com/3marathonchallenge Slovenia was to be country number 5 in 11 days. We made a beeline for it's pretty and historical capital of Ljubljana. Having previously been here on holiday about 4 years ago, it was my turn to lead the tour. Ahem, that is just as soon as we got our bearings, parked up, continued on foot and found a hostel. The hostel was in a prime location overlooking the river Ljubljanica and the fella that checked us in resembled a slightly overweight Tom Hanks. Whilst I realise there is absolutely no connection between those two points, I thought th [View Full Entry]

Today i realized that I have chosen quite a risky way to the office; I get off the bus at Hotel Lev. From there I pass the brewery and hit the gas station (I think it's a Hip Hop). This is a nice walk - the only harmful thing that can happen is that I get pooped on by some pigeon (or get hit by a car if I'm uncautious enough!) After I pass the gas station, I get to the four railway lanes and this is where it gets risky. I will not say that I almost got hit today, [View Full Entry]

Good Morning, beautiful Earth! This entry is for a short update on my last week. Pugy has been in Portugal and I've had the office to myself. It's been good, but quiet too! I've worked a bit on my language course, constantly trying not to focus on grammar because I know it'll make me too frustrated, and I've been doing some brainstorming on an eventual project. I have also discovered my own euroscepticism and realized that I need to learn more about the EU before I "make up my mind"... I have been ill (actually I still caugh at night), but [View Full Entry]

Excerpted from my book: Our Summer in Slovenia, Amazon.com More on Slovenia's position in the world on bee keeping. Even today there are more than 10,000 beekeepers in Slovenia second only to Argentina, which of course is much larger and with a greater population. During the 19th century Slovenia exported entire colonies of bees to the United States to propagate its agricultural expansion across the great plains and on into California and Oregon. The sliding box hive was invented in Slovenia allowing the transport of hives from field to field and the easy removal of honeycombs. This develop [View Full Entry]

BEE HIVE-CHINESE MAN

Hi there. It's been a while since the last update now, but the days have been very busy. On Monday last week I went to Log pod Mangrtom (in North Primorska) for the on-arrival training. We were people from twelve different countries; Armenia, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, France, Austria and Norway. On day one we did different ice-brakers and team building practices. We were divided into three groups and had a compete on different tasks. My group got stuck with a turtle game! After the session we even went back to complete the game and after [View Full Entry]

On Tuesday I had my first meeting with the scouts at Rašiški Rod in Gameljne. I got off the bus at the last stop, and they certainly knew I had arrived when they saw som kind of tourist taking random photos of the bus shed! I was surprised, and very impressed, that they actually held most of their meeting in English. They tought me some things about scouting; troops, patrols, structure and activities. It was informative and interesting and I hope to see more of these people. On Thursday I met up with Neza (it's supposed to be a Z with [View Full Entry]
