The Slovene lands were part of the Holy Roman Empire and Austria until 1918 when the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats in forming a new multinational state, renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. After World War II, Slovenia became a republic of the renewed Yugoslavia, which though Communist, distanced itself from Moscow's rule. Dissatisfied with the exercise of power by the majority Serbs, the Slovenes succeeded in establishing their independence in 1991 after a short 10-day war. Historical ties to Western Europe, a strong economy, and a stable democracy have assisted in Slovenia's transformation to a modern state. Slovenia acceded to both NATO and the EU in the spring of 2004. To be updated

On Tuesday I had my first meeting with the scouts at Rašiški Rod in Gameljne. I got off the bus at the last stop, and they certainly knew I had arrived when they saw som kind of tourist taking random photos of the bus shed! I was surprised, and very impressed, that they actually held most of their meeting in English. They tought me some things about scouting; troops, patrols, structure and activities. It was informative and interesting and I hope to see more of these people. On Thursday I met up with Neza (it's supposed to be a Z with [View Full Entry]

It's Sunday "morning" and I have just had my breakfast. It struck me that Slovenians are really good at kruh - I eat twice as much here as in Norway. I also found out that you actually sell Wasa bread from Sweden... Anyway, it's strange how time flies when you're always occupied with something. It feels like this week started yesterday, and now it's Sunday already. Chill-out Sunday. I'm still in my pyjamas. The language course started last week and our mentor, Neja, suggested we'd be each others teachers so that we learn actively instead of just listening to her. We're [View Full Entry]

I made a horrible mistake in my last entry. The masks that chase the winter away, with big fur and bells around the stomach, are from Ptuj - not Ljubljana. Sorry! I've had a couple of progressive days in the office now. Tadej and I have discussed a lot of different issues and I'm starting to see the beginning of an eventual project. So for the next few days I will spend time trying to create a frame around this idea we have and from there judge if it's doable or not. But of course I think it is! Apart from [View Full Entry]

This is my first weekend in Ljubljana and so far it's been good. I got up this morning, made myself some breakfast and walked into town where I met up with Maja and her friends. We watched the carneval and went for a coffee by the river. After that I did some vegetable shopping at the market. I had picked some carrots and onions and was ready to pay when the woman at the stall pointed at some lettuce and said "Dober!" Before I even had time to think she had filled up a huge bag with lettuce, so I figured [View Full Entry]

I arrived here yeaterday at 2pm and Tadej was waiting for me outside the ZTS office. On the shuttle from the airport I was constantly nervous - for a minute I even thought 'OMG, what am I doing?' It felt strange finally having to meet up with the person I had been in contact with for such a long time. Tadej turned out to be a very nice person, though, as did the other people in the office (not that I didn't think so!) I had lunch with Tadej's family last night (lunch in Slovenia is actually dinner...) and they were [View Full Entry]

Well where did I leave off... oh yes went out for some cake after the internet last time. I had a kiwi/banana/something red cake, which was white with white frosting. mmmmm very good. jeff had a snowball like thing but it looked awfully dense. then we headed off to bed for our last night in Bosnia. Got up reasonably early for one last look around the city. I still cant believe how beautiful it was. However it was really really smoggy, the air actually had a taste. So we just moseyed around, ate some more chocolate bread, had sausages adn fries [View Full Entry]

(Excerpted from my book Our Summer in Slovenia Amazon.com) Not in my wildest imaginings, no matter how many hallucinogens I might have taken, would the idea of visiting a bee museum have occurred to me. At first, I thought it was a joke. A "sting" operation on gullible tourists. "Oh, you must not miss visiting the National Bee Museum" in Radovljica, a town of about 6,000 only a ten minute drive from Bled, we were told. "oh sure, The bee museum, wouldn't want to miss that" we replied. Well, you narrow-minded, pseudo-sophisticate, jaded world-weary traveler who thinks all that is worth [View Full Entry]
