The Slovene lands were part of the Holy Roman Empire and Austria until 1918 when the Slovenes joined the Serbs and Croats in forming a new multinational state, renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. After World War II, Slovenia became a republic of the renewed Yugoslavia, which though Communist, distanced itself from Moscow's rule. Dissatisfied with the exercise of power by the majority Serbs, the Slovenes succeeded in establishing their independence in 1991 after a short 10-day war. Historical ties to Western Europe, a strong economy, and a stable democracy have assisted in Slovenia's transformation to a modern state. Slovenia acceded to both NATO and the EU in the spring of 2004. To be updated

We arrived in Slovenia via train from Graz. While there is no border crossing as both Austria and Slovenia are members of the EU, there was one thing we noticed immediately - the change of language! Suddenly we noticed that we had no idea of what people were saying or what the simplest of signs meant. When we arrived at Maribor railway station I had to give in to a call of nature and found myself standing at two doors, one labeled "Zenski" and the other "Moski" - luckily I could understand the pictures below the names! From that moment on [View Full Entry]

Today we headed off for a look at what is apparently Slovenia most popular tourist attraction, the Postojna Caves. These caves are about an hours drive southish from Ljubljana (a little longer when you factor in the road works and traffic time). The caves themselves are massive and are apparently the largest in Slovenia, at 20km long, although not the largest in the world which are located in the USA and are over 500km long. The tourist section of the Posotjna Caves are only 5.7kms long. The only problem with visiting these caves is the fact that they are sooooo popular [View Full Entry]

Ljubljana Scott and I arrived in Ljubljana around 19:15, we said our goodbyes to Minka and then we were met by Scott’s cousin Zvone and his partner Nusa. They took us for a lovely walk around the city of Ljubljana and show us the major sites to check out the next day. So we walked from the train station ( Zelezniska postaja ) to the center ( Center Mesta ) and down to the old square ( Stara Ljubljana ). Ljubljana is definitely one of the most beautiful European cities that we have seen in our travels. The city is very [View Full Entry]

It was with a sad heart that I said goodbye to Bled and caught the bus to Ljublana at lunchtime yesterday. However to console myself for my upcoming departure I booked myself in to have a manicure at the wellness spa that was attached to my pension. At first I was a little disappointed with my manicure (she made me bleed while she was cutting my cuticles) however when she added a gorgeous little flower design onto my little finger nails and then when I realised that in different lights the base coat of the french manicure that she gave me [View Full Entry]

Today I decided to take of the pension bikes and head out to Triglavski National Park to take a look at Vingtar Gorge. The lady at the front desk had said that the bike ride out there was easy, but slightly uphill. I decided that she was a little mistaken about the slightly uphill park when I came to a hill that I had to go down into the second lowest gear to climb. However the ride out to the gorge was just lovely. I managed to get some great panoramas on the way there. You have to pay to [View Full Entry]

Today was heaven and hell. The hell was the fact that I got on a train yesterday (after a full day of sightseeing) and spent the next 12 hours awake on trains travelling to get to Slovenia. The first train was a lovely train that took me from Berlin to Munich. This train was the epitome of German cleanliness and efficiency. Although it was a frightfully busy train, the route must be very popular. After an hour's stopover at Munich (from 22:50 to 23:40) I hopped on board a not so nice train to complete my journey from Munich to Bled, [View Full Entry]

Scotland to Kanal (Photos to follow when we can find a decent internet connection!) Leaving Scotland! I got back from work on Friday, much worse for wear thanks to a few drinks with a few folk from work. I was quite hungover and of the opinion that Slivovitza is not your friend. I also ended up with half my face missing for some reason, I had two scrapes on my forehead and one big one above my right cheek beside my ear, and behind my right ear was a mess. I can assure you when Penny saw my face she wasn’t [View Full Entry]

Thursday 7th may 2009 A very warm sunny day, clear blue skies. We headed for the snow line first heading for Pokljuka, we drove up to 3600 feet where we found snow it was quite strange shorts and tee shirts in the snow, Barney thought we were mad!!! We then backtracked and took the road to Krma well more of a track really. We came across a village that had been torched by the Germans in the war killing 22 people. The National Park authorities have partially rebuilt one of the buildings and have a monument to villagers memory The rivers [View Full Entry]

Friday 8th May 2009 Today we took the Pletna ( a wooden clinker built boat with a sunshade rowed by one man with 2 oars standing at the stern) to the Island of Bled. On the Island is a church and a house with a small shop and café. This Island was inhabited as early as the 7th Century. We visited the Church of Mary the Queen with its beautiful Gold altar. The Church houses the Wishing Bell and legend has it that anyone who rings the bell 3 times to honour the Blessed Virgin will see their wish come true, [View Full Entry]

Next morning D & J popped in to say goodbye as we were having breakfast - they were heading for the coast and we were off to Lake Bled. The drive to the town of Bled and the lake was only about 30km, which highlights one of the great things about Slovenia, it’s so compact. You could drive to just about anywhere from the centre at Ljubljana in couple of hours, unless you wanted to take the backroads of course which is what we often did. Lake Bled was beautiful and the Planet sums it up thus; “With its emerald-green lake, [View Full Entry]
