“Dober dan!” Hello! After having breakfast at Hotel Bled, we headed out for the day. The tour today includes a trip into the Kras Region, near the Italian border, a little east of the area where we toured yesterday. This region of Slovenia is the World’s original “karst” area and is where the term karrst topography originated. The area is riddled with limestone outcroppings and sinkholes and an extensive underground lake and cavern system. The fist stop was in Lipica. Founded in 1580, this is the site of the original stud-farm for Lippazan stallions. A classical riding school was founded after [View Full Entry]

Day 1 Adriatic Coast

 Europe » Slovenia » Istria » Piran
The day began with breakfast at the hotel. Then, we headed on a 3 hour bus ride for the Slovenia Coast. We met our tour guide for the week, Jon. We headed south for Piran, a beautiful fishing village and vacation destination. The small village hosts 20 Catholic churches, dedicated to various saints. Piran was home to the composer, Guiseppe Tartini, whose statues welcomed us in Piran Square. We walked up small winding alleys, past hanging houses to see the view from the prominent Church of St. George. The original church building was constructed in the 3rd century. In the 14th [View Full Entry]

Still looking good on a 9hr plane ride.
After a long day of travel, we were happy to arrive at our hotel in Bled. From the plane, we had a sneak peak of the Alps and of Venice. On the drive from Venice to Bled, we enjoyed seeing family vineyards and the Italian countryside. From the room at Hotel Park, we have a beautiful view of Lake Bled. Directly across the lake, atop the hill is Castel Bled. A beautiful old church sits on an island in the middle of the lake. With little sleep but lots of energy, we are off and anxious do a little exploring. [View Full Entry]

Ladies and gents, ponovno pozdravljeni v oddaji Spet ne doma. Tokrat vas bomo popeljali nekam, kamor Ivina noga še ni stopila, nekam, kamor je Juri Muri odšel e zavnaj, nekam tja dol v A-A- uh?

It happens every year. In the last half of November all the old friends keep in touch and decide where to spend New Year's day. The tradition of going somewhere abroad has been going on for a while now and it all started in 1999 when we went to Prague. This year was doomed by indecision: someone wanted to go back to Spain, after the great experience of last year in Madrid. Others were opting for somewhere closer, since everybody was lacking time and I was the only one on a long vacation. Umberto had this brilliant idea: Ljubljana, the capital [View Full Entry]

We decided to celebrate our final days in London by going on 'Our last Trip' to Ljubljana, Slovenia. It had taken us about three months to get our tongue around the pronunciation of the word and had no clue on what to expect!! Apart from a war with Yugoslavia in the early 90's there was not alot we did know about the place! In actual fact our Europe guide book had all of three pages on Slovenia which does not necessarily give the sense that there is a lot happening!!! After arriving mid afternoon we decided to go for a walk [View Full Entry]

This morning was possibly our earliest start yet in our travels, we even made time for breakfast. We caught the bus to Postojna pretty easily and the journey took us approximately an hour. We knew that the cave tours didn't begin until ten in the morning, however the bus timetable really didn't mesh with the cave timetable in any way shape or form. We jumped off the bus at the station which is in the middle of the town, it felt like a ghost town. It was ten to nine in the morning but there was very little movement anywhere. We [View Full Entry]

The temptation of breakfast was great enough that I actually got up for it despite feeling seriously sleep deprived. We didn't really have plans for the day, so when breakfast was finished we returned to our room after putting on a wash. We both slept for a while however it was Rob who had to drag me out of bed to ensure that we actually did something in the day. When we both were ready we walked over to the other side of the water and found ourselves caught up in a mass of tourists perusing the markets. We had a [View Full Entry]

Today we got up early so that we could get to lake Bled and get back in time for the ice hockey match we had bought tickets for. After enjoying another buffet breakfast we made our way to the bus station, although we were unsure as to where it was. I had seen that it was in front of the train station from the map but had no idea where to buy tickets; we went into the train station, I went to the ticket desk and Steph to the information and we both found out that it was the kiosk type [View Full Entry]

We had been fore-warned that there was some work being done at Park Hotel thay may cause a little disturbance from 9-5. We had set our alarm for nine so that we could waken \ without the sound of drilling. Around twenty past eight we were woken by the sound of hammering; we ignored it and continued to lay in bed until the incessant drilling began just before nine. We couldn't stand the loudness of it and reluctantly got up and went for breakfast. Surprisingly breakfast was completely worth getting up for. There was cereal, bread, spreads, cheese, meats, cooked stuffs, [View Full Entry]
