aaaaaaaaaace. it's bloody cold in this wonderful place. jerry is currently on an inversion table, and it looks pretty entertaining to be fair. anyway, token recap of the last 24 hours. getting to stansted was a pain, and it cost me a stupid amount of money, resulting in me then worrying about saving money for when i get back, which is pretty lame, as i dont want to worry about that whilst i'm here, as it's my week of no worrying. but yes, got to stansted, waited around for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages, and then got my booty on a plane. i love flying. i've said it about 793 times, but flying, especially over cities at night, is my favourite thing to do. we had a bit of turbulence, which i quite liked strangely enough. it's a strange sensation, ... read more

This is our adopted name because we couldn't figure out how to say it until we got there. When we did get there we went straight to jail, literally. Not for being unable to pronounce the name of the city but our hostel had once been the city jail! We stayed in cell number 13 oooo! It was funky. This short short stay soon gained a focus when Adam found out that the Freemasons were DJing that night! What we didn't know was where! So we took a bus and hoped for the best! We followed everyone else, all chavtastic, who didn't get in because we think you have to be 21 here. So while they got cold outside on the industrial estate we got cold on the inside! The Freemasons were awesome and Becs even ... read more

20th -22nd October............... Ljubljana with a population of 269,000 was the city that inspired me the most as to what Adelaide could be like that would draw tourists to experience an alternative relaxed lifestyle. What is needed however is inspired leadership on a Adelaide Local Government and State level. Ljubljana is in a lovely setting with a backdrop of alpine mountains, a castle that overlooks the old city that curves around each side of the river. But it is its artistic vibrancy and creative community that makes it more than just another pretty city. I headed to the Celicia Hostel which ‘Lonely Planet’ lists as the world’s hippest hostel. The hostel in its past was a prison and has now been remodeled with each cell being designed by a different architect. They were given the brief ... read more

Monday 8th October We awoke to a beautiful, clear but slightly chilly day in Bled. Emma was very impressed with the breakfast on offer at the Garni Hotel Berc - fresh fruit, muesli, bread, yoghurt, coffee...and the waitress was onto it. After checking emails on the free computer, we gladly accepted the loan of Luka's bikes for a pedal around the lake. I could definitely see why it was rated no. 1 in Bled on the Tripadvisor website! Just a couple of minutes roll down the hill brought us to Lake Bled and now that it was daylight we could see the island in the middle of the lake dominated by the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary. On the far side, up on the cliff top, sat the picturesque Bled Castle. In fact, picturesque ... read more

walked up to bus station, seems 90% of people walking the streets that time of day are generally fit slovenia girls. niiice. made the early bus trip with jez & simone. tried to sleep... no chance against a bus window. not the 1st time i've tried that so i should have known better. got in, found the hostel i wanted but it was without a reception until 4pm. rejoined the couple, ate some hot, hearty goulash soup, hired bikes & rode around beautiful lake bled. weather was perfect, especially great considering the foggy early morning skies. took a row boat to the island where i was treated to a new dance i call the japanese shuffle. visited the castle as things started getting colder, but refused to pay 6 euros for a quick gander so just ... read more

arrived late fri night after a 9hr+ train... exhausting, and particularly shit when i realised that i had lost my diary AGAIN and couldn't busy myself by writing during the trip. got to the hostel, luckily snapped up the last bed. met some of the gang - louise, mike, and emily and the american girls. the 2 forementioned girls and i then kicked for a couple of quiet ones at a small riverside latin themed bar & the guiness bar. in making up for lost sleep i didn't get up so early. and as a result the 3 beds available 12 hours earlier were now all gone & i needed to find a new joint. but in doing so it was a step up - new hostel had a better common area, better bathroom (didn't have ... read more

It was now a while ago that we were actually in Slovenia and to be honest I am battling to remember what we got up to!! That is shocking! I loved Slovenia! It is a tiny country, below Austria and bordering on Croatia (I am updating the South Africans reading this....who I am certain are all wondering!) So much to do there and a definite must for those who want an active holiday or even a long weekend get away. From canyoning to cycling to skiing and rafting..........it is all there and so easy to access. We started the trip arriving from Austria on a train to Bled. Bled is a really pictureque town built around a lovely fresh water lake. The hostel we stayed in (Traveller's Haven) was brand new and very nice, bar the ... read more

Hi all, Trust you are all well.... Jacqui here. Brian is having a snooze today rather than writing this together as we usually do - the life of a traveller! Last we updated the blog we were in Macedonia so quite a bit of water has gone under the bridge since. Lake Ohrid was a wonderful spot. We had a great room right on the shore of what is one of the largest lakes in Europe. Beautiful scenery all around with little churches and monasteries dotted along the cliffs on the edge of the lake. Hopefully we can add some photos for you all to see this time. From there we took a bus over the mountains and down into Albania - probably the poorest country we have visited so far and unless one has a ... read more

Bled Slovenia Our journey from Vienna to Venice was broken up by another jewel in this amazing tour of central Europe. Arriving in Bled, Slovenia set on a lake surrounded in snow capped mountains and pure fresh air in time for dinner. This was a chance to sample their famed stake and truffles which although interesting probably an acquired taste. Unfortunately for my livers sake Roxy, Alan and I discovered a live music club where we enjoyed the talents of a Slovenian heavy metal band and the local brew. After falling off my stool at the end of the evening we made our way home stirring for a much needed cooked breakfast. Fighting a doggy stomach (can’t blame the truffles) a few of us took the local bus to Banji to climb one of the countries ... read more

A European Crossroads The moment you drive across the border in Slovenia from Croatia you feel very much like you’ve entered a different country. For the most part, the other Balkan states that we traveled through have very similar geography and ecology, they all seem to have tall mountains, low lying scrub plants and wide vistas. When we left Plitvice for a quick drive through Zagreb and into Slovenia I didn’t expect such a drastic change. The central part of Slovenia is much like Austria. It has incredibly tall mountains (it’s part of the Alps), green pastures, rolling hills covered in greenery and farms everywhere. It felt like stepping through a portal into a completely different pace. So Germanic that we wondered if we had fallen asleep for a couple of hours and woken up ... read more
