Wow! Bohinj is breathtakingly beautiful. It is also breathtaking getting here. Officially described as moderate the walk is tough and upon reaching the sort of final destination our hotel was a further 2km away. Probably worse mentally than physically but… The receptionist at the hotel was suitably impressed that we had walked so far and still looked human enough to allow in. She was very quick to point out that our booking included time in the wellness and spa centre. Unfortunately there no knee transplant facility here which is something that may assist. Anyway getting here. The route is well signed although the app that comes with the Juliana Trail is also super useful. Bluey and Bingo were right when they told ‘grandpa’ that ‘there’s an app for that’. The signs are on posts, pillars, pylons, ... read more
At times they are found in unusual places.
And at times shared with other walking trails.
But always welcome.

This morning we plan to take a boat ride out to the island in Lake Bled, the one (I don’t think there are any other islands in the lake) with the iconic Assumption of Maria Church on it. It seems that the system here involves the boatman waiting for the boat to fill up (with people) and then off we go. He says we need to pay him in cash as we get on to come back, otherwise he‘ll leave us there. There’s no shortage of boats out here, plus paddle boarders and swimmers. Some of the people rowing don't look like they’ve got too much idea what they’re doing and I suspect a few of them might be in for a longish day. One of them nearly crashes into us; we’re a lot bigger than ... read more

The Triglav National Park is the oldest, greatest and only national park in Slovenia. Bohinj is at the heart of it. The protected natural and cultural area surrounding the highest Slovenian mountain, Triglav. Due to the sensitive natural environment and its fragility, the park is also a part of Unesco’s Man and the Biosphere Programme Lake Bohinj is Slovenia's largest permanent lake - it is 4.2 km long (2.6mi) and 1km width max (0.62mi) - If you are wondering why 'permanent' it is because there is the Cerknica lake that almost disappears by cycle (when I went there was almost no water) It is located in the heart of the Julian Alps protected as the Triglav National Park - it is between the summits of Vogel (South) and Prsivec (North). Church of St. John the Baptist ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 15th February Bohinj - Slovenia Bohinj is located in the heart of the Julian Alps. The most extensive and highest mountain range in Slovenia & is also the most south-eastern part of the Alps. Lake Bohinj is the largest lake in Slovenia. Despite the thick snow our guide stepped up close to the statue giving tribute to 4 brave men who were the first to climb Mount Triglav. In 1778 4 brave men from Bohinj were the first to climb Triglav. These were a surgeon, a miner, a hunter & an army surgeon. The ascent took three days and on 26 August 1778, the four brave men reached its peak. Slovenes were then formally recognized as one of the Alpine nations. We continued to walk to a wooden jetty on the edge of the lake, ... read more

Day 34 : Wednesday 9 October 2019 : Mount Vogel From the local station we took a bus to Ukanc (€16 ow). It seems to be in the middle of nowhere. We’re wearing exercise leggings, and Graham has no jumper, and its supposed to be about 2 degrees at the top of the Cable Car (€67). Oh well, off we go. Cable car doesn’t take long. Lovely views. It’s a ski field in winter. We take a walk around and it was awesome. Some fun sculptures, we headed out for a walk and the weather came in. It was a blanket of white, unbelievably windy, and the temperature was dropping quickly. It was quite exhilarating, and nothing we would ever experience at home. Brilliant experience. We head back to the restaurant and order some yummy lunch ... read more

On Sunday, we got up early and headed for the Sixt car rental at the train station in Ljubljana, hauling our suitcases and some food. We were in line behind a man speaking with an American accent, and we heard him mention "Seattle" to the employee. As we exclaimed that we too were from the Seattle area, the couple behind us chimed in, saying they were also from the Seattle area....really, what were the chances? I was the driver for this rental, since Bill had driven in Italy. A former student, Dan Thompsen, had given me a back roads route to Bled, where we would pay for our forest cabin, and buy supplies for our two night stay in the Triglav National Park. The route was beautiful, and I didn't hit anyone on the blind curves, ... read more

We got up to get the first cable car down just after 8:30am, first stop was the store to pick up food then headed west to the Julian Alps. Our planned first stop was the Goreljek Bog nature trail but unfortunately we encountered a road closure that meant a long detour that took us past Lake Bled and along the main road. This took us past the Vodnik Viewpoint so we stopped there for lunch first. There was a lovely view down the valley to Lake Bohinj & a beautiful cat that followed us up there! From here we headed over to Goreljek Bog, it took a little while to find where the nature trail started but then it was a lovely short walk around the peat bog, although Chavaunne was unimpressed & there were rather ... read more

After a short, chilly set of stretches on our room’s balcony and the typical ham and bread breakfast, we drove to the other end of Bohinj Laketo walk back via the woodland and lakeside path. Equipped with hiking boots and poles to ensure our safety, our energetic friends blazed along, and we photographers strolled along, captured by the morning light reflecting the distant snowy mountains in the lake. On Bohinj Lake, scullers were training, a lake craft chugged tourists around, mallards nipped the green underwater plants, trout swam back and forth at the shallow edge, spring flowers showed their fresh blooms – and, we took pictures of it all. When we caught up to the others, Bill showed off his wet clothes. He had gone for a quick dip in the cold water (not so cold, ... read more
