In 1856, the two principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia secured their autonomy and ended the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire. In 1859 they united, and a national identity was born, adopting the name Romania in the following years. Formal recognition of its independence occurred in 1878. Following World War II, Romania was occupied by the Soviets, and a "people's republic" was formed in 1947. From 1965, under the regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu, the Romanian people suffered impoverishment and oppression, until his overthrow and execution during the Revolution of 1989. Recent political events have seen Romania become a full member state of the European Union in June 2007. To Be Updated

It's finally that time of the year... = Yeah, yeah, I know not everybody gets into the Christmas & New Year spirit! So? What do I know? 1st of December it's always a great day for 2 reasons: - begining of winter holidays (for those who love snow, the sledges, traffic jams and so on) - and due to the fact that on 1st December we celebrate Romania's National Day (actually this year we are celebrating 90 years since the great union in Alba Iulia) ... as you guessed that means free day/no work and fortunately this year 1st of December [View Full Entry]

Oh Christmas tree...
The band under the Christmas tree
Scary !!!!!!!!!!

First, to clarify: Boulevard (self explanatory), Strada (Street), Calea (Way), Piata (Square)... Sunday, November 30 was election day. Monday, December 1, was a national holiday celebrating 90 years since Romania united its provinces (more or less). This is why there are a lot of flags out and about. I started a long walk from Boulevardu Tineretului, up to Piata Unirii, and then cut over to Strada Lipscani. I took lots of pictures from the streets around Lipscani, including Smardan, Franceza, Selari Nicolae, Doamnei, Hanul cu Tei, etc...Then, I got on Calea Victoria, passed Piata Revolu [View Full Entry]

Bucharest, or Bucuresti in Romanian, is a strange city. It also happens to be my hometown, though sometimes its hard to come to terms with it. Despite the gray buildings, dirt, and vaguely hostile inhabitants, the root word of Bucuresti is "Bucur" as in the verb "A Bucura" or "To be Happy". Thus, where it may apply literally or not, the word Bucuresti conveys happiness, even joy. So, I am heading on a local journey through the city to show you the good, the bad and the ugly. Though, to be honest, the ugly is probably the easiest thing to find. [View Full Entry]

Wow time is really flying. Vienna was wonderful, what a beautiful city. I ended up spending two nights there, one just wasn't enough, there were so many sights to see and galleries to wander, saw some van gogh paintings and climt paintings and so many more. On the second night I thought it being the city of music and arts, that i would attend one of the jewish music festival gigs and get some local culture. So much for the local culture, the first act was a guy from california, and the second was a group from montreal. Argh. It was [View Full Entry]

Okay so the last time we talked we were about to head to Romania on an overnight train. We boarded the train in Belgrade, only to be told by the conductor that there was an error with our ticket we had purchased the day before. We went to the desk and sorted it out. It turns out the error was that the date had been written as 1.11.08 instead of 11.1.08. Seriously. Big f**king deal. With that fixed we boarded the train and our compartment was next to two Aussie girls we had befriended back at our hostel. It is important [View Full Entry]

ROMANIA Europe » Romania
Sometimes, I think Romania is the strangest place that I have ever been. I'm not sure why I think this. Africa was certainly far more different, far more remote. Romania at least operates by the same rules as we do - there are roads, there are cars, there are houses, people, ads for iphones and digital cameras, but yet everything is just slightly off kilter. Sometimes it feels like being in Europe - almost - but it is Europe in an alternate universe. A Europe if the last 75 years of history - the events that shaped us and our parents [View Full Entry]

23 OCTOBER - SINAIA Free day today so after getting up and grabbing some food a few of us headed up the mountains via cable car. I dont do well with heights and cable cars and the two rides were slightly interesting - like a giant ski lift. Scary... The first cable car went up to 1400 metres and then the second one took us up to the very top of the mountain at 2000 metres. We were hoping to see snow, but while we could see it on other mountains it was always a little too far away to actually [View Full Entry]

20 OCTOBER - SIBIU, ROMANIA It was a 'free day' today so woke up at about 8am for breakfast. Discovered that much of our tour group had had a very eventful night. Four people (two rooms) had been moved at about 2am as they couldn't sleep because of the noise from the night club below. I didnt hear a thing. Then when I asked about breakfast I discovered that apparently breakfast wasnt included despite us being told that it was. Hmmm. So I had to go and wake our tour leader to get it sorted out. Felt really bad as he [View Full Entry]

17 OCTOBER - SIGHISOARA Didnt intend to get up early this morning but ended up creeping around the room at about 8am and went for a walk. Walked round the city walls and up to the church. Quite pretty inside but nothing overly special in my opinion. Then it was a wander through another cemetary and into town. Grabbed some breakfast along the way too. Everywhere I seemed to turn though I ran into other people from the group who were also just out for a walk. At 1pm we all met in the hotel foyer to go up the clock [View Full Entry]

14 OCTOBER - EGER TO VADU TZEI (MARAMURES) VIA DEBRECEN Early start this morning and had left the pension by 8am. Mode of transport on this very long travel day included a bus, followed by a train, then a tram, then another train, then private transport. We got to the bus station bright and early and found our bus. There was already a queue (of sorts) of locals waiting to get on. The boys took care of all of our luggage so that we could all hop on and make sure we all got enough seats. Turned out that wasnt really [View Full Entry]
