In 1856, the two principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia secured their autonomy and ended the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire. In 1859 they united, and a national identity was born, adopting the name Romania in the following years. Formal recognition of its independence occurred in 1878. Following World War II, Romania was occupied by the Soviets, and a "people's republic" was formed in 1947. From 1965, under the regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu, the Romanian people suffered impoverishment and oppression, until his overthrow and execution during the Revolution of 1989. Recent political events have seen Romania become a full member state of the European Union in June 2007. To Be Updated

May 17th to May 19th. Back to Bucharest! We hadn't planned on going back to Bucharest but it made the most sense being that our next stop was Brasov almost straight North through Bucharest. We emailed the Funky Chicken and our friends that we were Surprise!, coming back. Laura and James were waiting for us at the hostel. It was so good to be together again! And Anna was working at the Funky Chicken, too! We had a great time in Bucharest, as always, our second time around. And we taught Laura and James how to play pitch which is the [View Full Entry]

embarassing scores!

Sunday, May 17th...I had to create a seperate entry for this special train ride back to Bucharest because it was so great. We left Vama Veche by way of maxi taxi bus to another sea side town called Mangalia. And from Mangalia we took an hour and a half train ride back to Constanta. In Romania there are 4 different classes of trains. P-Personal, A-Accelerated, I-Intercity and R-Rapid. As you can guess, P is the slowest and cheapest, A is a little faster and the I and R trains are very nice, fast and sometimes have dining cars. Tages and I [View Full Entry]

May 15th to May 17th We travelled to the Southern most tip of Romania on the Black Sea to a little seaside town called Vama Veche. We went there because our Let's Go guide had said it remains a destination for Romania's counterculture, with hippies, punks and goths flocking to camp on the nude beach and rock out under the stars. Sounds like paradise, right? Well, we didn't really see any punks but we found out that it only gets busy during the summer when students are on holiday from school. We figured we would get off the bus and make [View Full Entry]

More about my work Europe » Romania
A labor of love As many of you know, I do both short term relief and long term development. I work directly with small, grass roots charities who already have a track record of success and who have few other outside resources. In other words, my heart is to help those who have very little help, hope or champion. My passion is to marshall the resources of the first world to help those in need while simultaneously blessing & enriching the lives of first world donors. I help donors know that they are making a transformative difference in the lives of [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, May 12th. Journal entry...."on train to Constanta. so far the country has seemed nice, green, brown and peaceful. I've seen lots of railway workers asleep in the field right next to the train tracks. and goats and dogs atop heaps of trash. and people plowing the fields and traditional looking Romanian women with scarves tied under their chin." We wanted to travel to the black sea after Bucharest for a couple of reasons. One, I love large bodies of water so much and wanted to see another sea. Also, Tages had an uncle that she loved very much named Uncle [View Full Entry]

May 7th, Thursday....Oh Bucharest, where do I begin? Let's start with our celebratory drinks on Sky Europe flight #NE3208 to Bucharest. We were celebrating for many reasons. We had not slept in over 36 hours, we had stayed all night in Amsterdam at the Centraal Station and then at Schipol Airport. Our flight from Amsterdam to Vienna included an 8 hour layover. We even had to exit the airport and recheck in. But we had made it and had our second wind knowing we would be in Romania soon. Romania was one of the countries we have been most looking forward [View Full Entry]

My host in Timisoara did not give me a number or an address and so when I got there just after lunch, I had no idea where I was or if I had a place to stay that night. The lady behind the info counter at the train station was nice enough to let me into her cubicle and search for the train timetable for my next destination but couldn't tell me anything else since she didn't speak English. I later found out that it was atypical behaviour and probably because I was a tourist. *shrug* eh, at least there's a [View Full Entry]

I finally arrived in Bucharest after a week of wandering the mother continent. It was a relief to arrive back. The best part was they finally fixed the streets coming back from the airport. I was expecting to be on the airport bus for hours but it only took 20 minutes to get to Piata Victoriei. It was the best surprise ever! I spent the week out and about, immersed in cultural life and parks. There are a few changes since January, signs of progress. Unfortunately, none of it is happening around Lipscani, which still looks pretty much like the picture [View Full Entry]

At this point i am feeling my reverse culture shock and it is not comfortable at all :). I am at the anger stage and i really get pissed very easy. But i will not talk about that, i will tell you a few words about my last month and a half in Romania, show you some pictures and tell you about the decision made for this year. So, in the last month i managed to travel a bit for some conferences and i spent a lot of time with AIESEC people. I spent the new year eve together with [View Full Entry]
