In 1856, the two principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia secured their autonomy and ended the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire. In 1859 they united, and a national identity was born, adopting the name Romania in the following years. Formal recognition of its independence occurred in 1878. Following World War II, Romania was occupied by the Soviets, and a "people's republic" was formed in 1947. From 1965, under the regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu, the Romanian people suffered impoverishment and oppression, until his overthrow and execution during the Revolution of 1989. Recent political events have seen Romania become a full member state of the European Union in June 2007. To Be Updated

Going two days without a shower is never a good thing. Its even worst if you are in the middle of summer, lugging around over 20kg of luggage, sweating profusely and then being stuck in confined areas with others. I feel sorry for the people I shared the train cabin with and the people I shared the taxi with. Another thing that I have learnt that is never good, is doing back to back overnight buses/trains. Although I am incredibly tired, I did really enjoyed the train ride. I was in a cabin with other backpackers and they were incredibly good [View Full Entry]

Ok so we've already left but we wanted it on the little map thing. Currently in Bulgaria where there are yet more thunder storms and mosquitos which are eating us alive. (we call them Dracula). Arrived via night train last night and got to the hostel at around 6.30 am our time this morning (half 4 for you). Managed to check in and get a few hours sleep for a small extra charge, They also gave us breakfast so it was all good. Then we went for a wander and found all there seems to be here....nothing. We went into a [View Full Entry]

OK I think we left you in Krakow on last blog and it was a short one - sorry about that but time and interenet access wait for no-one. From Krakow we caught the overnight train to Budapest in Hungary - we got lucky and had a 4 berth cabin to ourselves so great sleep. We stayed at a lovely hostel - the Budapest Bubble (google it) with a lovely girl called Olga in charge. We had a great time at the thermal pools - spent a few hours in there and it was nice and relaxing though we probably broke [View Full Entry]

The elusive time wheel

What chances have I got? Unemployment rates are low world-over. It's recession. Jobs are axed, people laid off, exceptional employees made redundant. People lose homes and are unsure about tomorrow. It's only the beginning and the worst is yet to come. We haven't hit rock bottom yet and we don't know how long this recession is going to take. But this is not unfortunatelly the only disturbing problem I'm facing back home in Romania. I am in a state of shock. I am bewildered, confused and disgusted. I never imagined coming back to Romania at the age of 29, with an [View Full Entry]

We've established a long time ago that my blog includes, amongst other things, silly thoughts and ideas that I come up with every now and again. I can't really pinpoint the exact moment when 'Boyfriend Reference' first crossed my mind, but it happened as I was watching some music videos this morning. I was - for some weird reason- going through the list of boy-friends that are part of my brilliant past and was thinking if any of them would ever give me a good reference for further applications,mmr... I mean further relationships.. Just as you ask for credentials from a [View Full Entry]

By train and car to and from Iasi So, now that you've read about our trip to Moldova, you may be wondering "How the heck did they get there & back?" Well, we traveled through some of the most beautiful countryside in the world, in my humble opinion. And, we traveled there in the most stress free way-by train. Traveling by train in Romania is one of my most favorite travel activities. The lovely and varied scenery, the click clack of the rails, the gentle sway of the carriage, the unique churches and villages all combine together to weave an unforgettable [View Full Entry]

The most famous of Romania's "Painted Monasteries" Romania's "Painted Monasteries" are UNESCO World Heritage monuments. Perhaps the most famous and stunning of the painted monasteries is Voronet. Widely known throughout Europe as "the Sistine Chapel of the East" due to its interior and exterior wall paintings, this monastery offers an abundance of frescoes featuring an intense shade of blue commonly known as ‘Voronet blue.’ The composition of the paint continues to remain a mystery even now, more than 500 years after the church was built. Voronet Monastery was founded [View Full Entry]

Greetings! From Istanbul we caught a night train north to Bulgaria. We nursed a bottle of Raki (Turkish Ouzo) with our cabin mates before nodding off, only to be woken by border guards at 3 a.m. and told we needed to walk to the far end of the station to have our passports stamped. As we exited, the conductor pulled Jub aside, stuffed 15 Euros in his pocket, and asked for three cartons of cigarettes from the duty free store. So after getting his stamp, Jub headed to the store, but realized the conductor hadn't specified a brand. No big deal; [View Full Entry]

Travelling up from Sofia to Bucharest in Romania was quite an enjoyable journey. There was some beautiful scenery along the way to admire and it also gave me some ‘me time’ to catch up with reading after a busy time in Sofia pottering about. We travelled first class and before you conjure up images of fabulous décor with champagne and wine on demand; take a nostalgic moment to wander through the corridors of your mind and picture what CIE trains looked like in the 1970’s & 1980’s in Ireland and you’ve got the idea of what first class was like. If [View Full Entry]

Working alongside friends to help others So, now from the luxury and order of Holland into the excitement and wilds of Romania. I flew from Amsterdam to Vienna and then to Timisoara, Romania, where I was met by my good friend and lawyer, Daniel Musteata. Daniel is head of Bethlehem Ministries and works very hard to help poor children and families. A specialist in international adoptions, he has also set up foster family programs which have been very successful now that international adoptions have been outlawed in Romania. He trains families to become foster parents, then helps pla [View Full Entry]
