In 1856, the two principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia secured their autonomy and ended the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire. In 1859 they united, and a national identity was born, adopting the name Romania in the following years. Formal recognition of its independence occurred in 1878. Following World War II, Romania was occupied by the Soviets, and a "people's republic" was formed in 1947. From 1965, under the regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu, the Romanian people suffered impoverishment and oppression, until his overthrow and execution during the Revolution of 1989. Recent political events have seen Romania become a full member state of the European Union in June 2007. To Be Updated

I know it is so post-holiday, but the last pictures I took in Bucharest coincide with my last entry (Dec. 26), so here is a flashback of 2008: Before Christmas, I attended a holiday concert at the Atenul Roman (or Romanian Athenium). For those foxy followers of my blog, I have already photographed the Atenu from the outside, so this set of pictures are from inside the concerthall. The Atenu was officially opened in 1888 (yes, I have a pictures of it) and is a very classy building designed by a Frenchman, Albert Galleron, at the turn of the century. Another [View Full Entry]

Dear All, Happy New Year! And belated happy holidays! I will skip the obvious "it has been ages" and get to what we are here for - all the juicy gossip you have been craving about the where and when and how of America's finest redheaded couple who used to be volunteers in Romania, specifically Odorhei. That is correct - used to be for you who are out of the gossip loop, we are RPCVs. Unlike all those others who get to say the R before the Peace Corps Volunteer means Returned, in our case it means Retired as we have [View Full Entry]

Christmas in Romania Europe » Romania
English only! Christmas in Romania Spending Christmas in Romania was an amazing experience! Through family I was invited to celebrate Christmas with a Romanian family in this tiny tiny mountain village in Transylvania (Gheorghieni). Christmas couldn't have been better. It might have been my first white Christmas EVER (there was over 30 cm snow in some places!), and it not.. it was definitely the WHITEST. The journey to Romania With an Interrail-ticket and a bag full of books I set off for Romania. The train ride over there was supposed to take about 35 hou [View Full Entry]

Most of us come to the point where we need to take decisions that will influence us for the rest of our life, it starts with small ones, what mobile operator should i chose? where should i go this summer? should i buy this car or this car? and at one point it gets to "WHAT'S NEXT?" For a person that spent the last years traveling, being away from "home" the question that applies is "should i stay in my home town and do something or travel, explore, live...wander... The problem is that decisions are taken by both mind and [View Full Entry]

When I first arrived in Brasov, I was on my way to Moldova and it was early in the morning and snowy. I was in search of Autogara 2 (Bus station 2). Given the amount of tourist traffic that this city gets, I would not have expected that it was that difficult to get directions to this bus station. Granted, I don't speak Romanian, but really, "Autogara Doi?" shouldn't elicit a 'deer in the headlights' response from a couple dozen locals at the main station. I asked the information clerk at the train station about a bus to Chisinau, and she [View Full Entry]

Brasov is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Still seemingly relatively unscathed by tourists the people were very friendly and welcoming. Musts include trying the mulled wine which is superb and the local spirit shot which isn't. [View Full Entry]

I recently visited the hottest street in Bucharest of street art. It was, appropriately, named after Arthur Verona, a painter. Though he would not recognize the style of the artwork on his street, I think he would appreciate the gesture. I am not as up on all the obscure Romanian personages as I should be, so I looked him up. He was a turn of the century artist who gave up a military career to paint. He studied in Vienna, Paris and Munich before settling in Bucharest. He was part of the "Baia Mare" school of painters and worked on landscapes, [View Full Entry]

I know its been a long time (if anyone is counting) but I have some new pictures of the city. Some of you may know that Bucharest just won the Guinness World Record for having the most Santa Clauses in one town. They all gathered in front of the Parliament Building. Wish I had seen that, but I am a late riser. But I got a glimpse of a couple. I guess this was on the heels of the attempt to make the world's biggest sausage, which I'm pretty sure was called off after the toxic Irish pork scare. Anyway, this [View Full Entry]

So close, but still not visited. Romania was always interesting to me and seemed like worth visiting. Similar culture, recent history and other facts make the mentality of people living there similar to the one over here. Beside this, my dad’s parents and family were originally from Banat, so I wanted to visit some of it as well. Not all roads lead to, by all my roads start from Belgrade, as the starting point for all my trips, so far. Not only because of trains departure from there, but also because of visas. Such a familiar situation: arriving in the [View Full Entry]

Sunday, I decided to take some pictures of Parcul Tineretului (ie Tineretului Park). It was raining when I woke up, of course. So I waited and waited, and finally the sun came out. I grabbed my camera and took a stroll. It is a beautiful, good sized park. It is completely surrounded by apartment blocks on all sides... an urban oasis, if you will. Actually, I think Bucharest has some of the nicest parks in the world. I mean, English parks are just fields with 3 trees and other places just have round-abouts where you can take your dog to the [View Full Entry]
