In 1856, the two principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia secured their autonomy and ended the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire. In 1859 they united, and a national identity was born, adopting the name Romania in the following years. Formal recognition of its independence occurred in 1878. Following World War II, Romania was occupied by the Soviets, and a "people's republic" was formed in 1947. From 1965, under the regime of Nicolae Ceauşescu, the Romanian people suffered impoverishment and oppression, until his overthrow and execution during the Revolution of 1989. Recent political events have seen Romania become a full member state of the European Union in June 2007. To Be Updated

Bucharest day 12 (June 18) It was a short train journey to Bucharest the capital of Romania. Our hotel was actually 3 star and a nice surprise. I took the metro to the down town area with a friend who had volunteered to help me get an external hard drive. He shook his head at the idea of going to an electrical store and then proceeded to show me how things worked in Romania. Using a web site we found a couple of hard drives that looked promising and arranged a meeting with the seller of one. We took the metro [View Full Entry]

Sinaia day 10-11 (June 16-17) Our train was running late, but finally it arrived and we headed off on an hour and half’s journey to a mountain resort town of Sinaia. We were warned that hiking here should only be done with a guide due to the prevalence of bears. Romania has the largest population of bear and wolves in Europe. The weather was wet again but undeterred we headed up the hills in the rain to visit the local monastery and a renowned castle. The castle was built relatively recently in terms of castles and had been furnished rather ornately [View Full Entry]

Brasov Europe » Romania » Transilvania » Brasov » Brasov
Brasov day 9 (June 15) Another mini-bus ride to Brasov. Equally crowded. I think one woman had a number of dinner sets in one stripy bag that was placed in the aisle, quite a few people sitting on luggage in the aisles. Brasov has a marketing slogan “Brasov, Probably the Best City in the World” which is a play on a Heineken add. A bold claim but I liked the slight humility in the “Probably” and also the fact that it wasn’t an absolute claim. Brasov is a lovely town. It’s old town including the black church (named due to a [View Full Entry]

Sibiu Europe » Romania » Transilvania » Sibiu » Sibiu
Sibiu day 7-8 (June 13-14) A return trip in our van with the wooden bench seat to Sighisoura where we caught a local mini bus to Sibiu. The bus was packed but we arrived in good time our driver handling the crazy overtaking of other vehicles. A taxi took us to a hotel a bit out of town, so we would need to relay on taxi’s to get us around. A visit to the local art museum, and a walk around the old town was the order of the afternoon. Sibiu had recently been the European Capital of Culture and so [View Full Entry]

Sighisoara and Viscri Day 5-6 (June 11-12) Train travel to Sighisoara which is a fortified town in Transylvania. Claim to fame being Dracula’s birthplace (but Vlad didn’t live here long). There was an a museum with old artefacts, especially Saxon which this area still holds a sizable population of. The museum was in a tower, and there was a great view over the area from the top, as well as being able to look at the clock mechanisms. We were glad to be sheltering here from the storm which had come over quickly. As it abated we headed up the covered [View Full Entry]

Maramures Day 3-4 (June 9-10) A bus journey to Debrecen was next where we had a few hours to spend before catching the train. This was a surprisingly large town on the Hungarian border. It was a very hot day, and we were happy to sit at a café for a long lunch, only making a brief foray into the nearby square. Catching the train from Debrecen and finally crossing out of the Schengen area into Romania. The border crossing was fairly painless and I made sure they had stamped my passport to show I had left Schengen (very important for [View Full Entry]

Thursday, May 28th to Saturday, May 30th. Our stay was short but nice in Oradea. There were three reasons we picked Oradea to be our exit point out of Romania. One, it was close to Budapest. Two, Tages really wanted to visit the popular Bear Cave. Three, Oradea has the only strictly vegetarian restaurant in Romania. We had read a vague discription about a camping ground in Oradea and we figured we would get to Oradea and figure it out. We didn't have internet access in Sighisoara so we were not able to plan as well as we usually do. We [View Full Entry]

Saturday May 23rd..Today we travelled Northwest to Sighisoara by a dirty old rambling train with lots of character. Our new friend Wieteke from the Netherlands took the train with us because she had also planned to stay a night in Sighisoara. When stepping off the train, it had a distinct small town feel about it. Sighisoara was high and low. The main city was low in the valley in between two mountains (well, to the locals they might be large hills but they were mountains to me) and then there was another city, a fortress city high in the mountains on [View Full Entry]

We touched down in Bucharest and immediately noticed the heat! It was lovely, a dry 27degrees and not a cloud in the sky :) Once we cleared customs we found the bus we needed to the city and hopped on, some random guy who spoke no English helped us with our tickets and stowing our packs - we assumed he worked for the bus people... until we got to our stop and he helped us off again and then wanted to walk us to our hotel. Needless to say, having experienced this sort of thing before, we pessimistically assumed he was [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, May 19th. We took the 6:13am P-train from Gara de Noor in Bucharest to Brasov. We were so excited to get our first peek at the mountains. The train ride was very nice and quiet. We arrived at the chaotic train station and navigated our way by bus to the hostel. Unfortunately, they did not get our reservations and the cheapest dorm room was booked. We had to stay in a private room which was nice but out of our budget. We did what we usually do when we first arrive in a town, ask lots of questions about the [View Full Entry]
