We arrived late last night so we spent the afternoon today just transferring from our hotel to our Airbnb and getting our bearings around old town. We had a leisurely lunch at a Lebanese restaurant and then took in the national history museum (robyn mistook it for the natural history museum). It mostly consisted of a reproduction of Trajans column from Rome. Not quite sure how that fits in with Romania's national history, but it was informative at least. Then we saw an exibit of ancient roman gold and silver. And lastly there was an exhibit of polish posters from wwii to present day. Hopefully the other museums will be more focused on Romanian history. Went to Van Gogh restaurant for a light dinner.... read more

Bags finalised then off to our last shipboard breakfast. Lots of goodbyes as we eat then onto the bus for the trip to Bucharest and a visit to the "Palace of the Parliament". This is the 2nd largest building behind the pentagon. It was built by the former dictator (Ceaușescu) about 30 years ago. This place is seriously big. We entered from the car park level, that is -3. Security, hand in passports and then we start our tour. A different tour guide from the parliament buildings. We walk up lots of steps, get told of all the different rooms, most of which are used for conferences or meetings. Half of the building is used as offices and it was never used by Ceaușescu as he was killed after being caught by the good guys. We ... read more

Well day 2 of my summer adventures ended up getting off to a late start. I ended up getting to bed around 2am - a combination of the overwhelming head, the snoring Pakistani in the bunk next to me and Louise messaging me kept me up - so after getting dressed and having breakfast I left my accommodation around midday. First stop was the train station to stock up on some more bottled water (I have never drunk so much water before!) and then I was off to figure out how to get a bus ticket. The first lady at the ticket office I approached just ended up yelling at me in Romanian (not she what/why she was yelling?). The next lady was slightly more helpful, and by that I mean was able to get my ... read more

Day 1 of my travels in Bucharest done and dusted and my first impression is - well, it's hot, sticky, there are lots of stray cats in the street and shirtless men. Shirtless men with quite substantial beer bellies I might add. My flight to Bucharest was fairly uneventful. I was quite amused going through customs as there was literally no body around even if you had stuff to declare. I then had to try find the bus stop (an easy enough task) and then catch the bus to the train station, which is a 5 minute walk from my accommodation. The bus part was easy but the walk ended up being a bit more confusing. I ended up asking a garbage man for directions, he was very helpful (despite speaking very limited English) but he ... read more

Wednesday July 29, 2015 – The train arrived in Bucharest on time, at 6:15am. I’m not a fan of arriving so early, but this time I had a hostel to go to, so it was not a problem. I got some money at an ATM and then took the metro to the hostel. I had to walk about 10 minutes, but the directions were clear. This hostel is small and is an apartment where the owner and his mom live. There are two rooms, and the one I am in is for four people, but I will have it to myself for both nights, which is great. It also comes with a hot breakfast. I took a shower and relaxed a bit and had breakfast, then headed out at 9:30am to find and meet the 10:30 ... read more

Did you know that Romania has the largest population of brown bears in Europe (over 6,500) next to Russia? (Random Ned Fact #47) So hike with caution my friends! Today was our ‘day off’, our rest day from our vacation. How ironic that we felt like we needed a day off from our vacation; however we did. It's been busy, and wonderful at the same time, but behind on blogging, we haven’t really had time to sit back, smell the roses, read a book as we’ve both been so interested in seeing as much as possible while away. These were 4 new countries for Dennis (3 for me) and both of us wanted to absorb as much as possible. Truthfully things are a tad bit fuzzy for me, which is why I keep blogging the most ... read more

Up early as we wanted to skip Bucharest traffic (which I completely understood now!) had breakfast (they had fresh red peppers slices at breakfast so I grabbed a handful for snacking on the coach later!) and asked Hendrik about the possibility of my clothes. He immediate said no, as clients often leave clothes behind to ‘throw away’ so its company policy to either throw them out or if the staff want they can keep. I was flabbergasted (while understanding at the same time) as I knew mine were neatly folded and tucked away; hopefully NOT looking like garbage or unwanted. But he said he would phone the ship; but little to no chance they still existed. I was crushed; not only at the monetary value lost, but again all my fav long sleeved shirts/dress tops and ... read more

Today was our leaving the ship day; we had a few minutes in bed to have coffee, then coffee. We had (too) quickly packed the night before so it was only a couple of last minute things to add, bags out by 7:45. We had breakfast then left at 09:00 and boarded our coach to go to the famous overly rich, over the top Palace of the Parliament that was built by Ceausescu (and trust me I had to google how to spell that - I was WAY off!). The building itself is 2nd largest in the world, only after the Pentagon, and apparently only by a few feet. It’s enormous and while we only toured about 5% of it - I was exhausted just looking at it. Completely and utterly over the top, Ceausescu built ... read more

The worst you can take away from people: their hope. Many years ago I crossed this country. Till then it was the worst country I ever saw. Everyone try to steal or scam you. Prostitution on every corner and corruption by police and border crossing. After many years and experience I concluded that in the end you can't blame this people. The worst thing was taken away from them. Their hope. The hope for tomorrow and no one who's reaching a hand to help for a better future. Today Romania it is not more the Romania which I remember in my childhood. Especially after this visit, my view to Romania and Romanians has been completely changed. As it was a business trip, instead of a report day by day, I report more the highlight of the ... read more

I've been living in Bucharest for 18 years and I tend to walk through it without looking around much. At some point, I noticed that there are some wonderful buildings in this city and that, even though most of them are not very well taken care of, there are still plenty of things to see here. This is more of a photo album than a trip and I hope it will grow over time. There are plenty of beautiful things in Bucharest that I haven't seen and plenty others that I've seen too often and became used to pass by without a second thought. I intend to change that.... read more
