The worst you can take away from people: their hope.

Many years ago I crossed this country. Till then it was the worst country I ever saw. Everyone try to steal or scam you. Prostitution on every corner and corruption by police and border crossing. After many years and experience I concluded that in the end you can't blame this people. The worst thing was taken away from them. Their hope. The hope for tomorrow and no one who's reaching a hand to help for a better future.

Today Romania it is not more the Romania which I remember in my childhood. Especially after this visit, my view to Romania and Romanians has been completely changed.

As it was a business trip, instead of a report day by day, I report more the highlight of the stay.

It was the first time that I entered Romania by plane, and after it joined the EU. Passport checks went smoothly and a friend was there to pick us up. Nothing much done on the first day except exploring the neighborhood and a small dinner. Good news for the smokers: Smoking is allowed in restaurants.

The main place for entertainment is the old city. Many bars restaurants and night clubs. First night we went to eat at the place http://www.zarazabar.ro/en/ which is quite nice for lounging. For the food it is not the place to be. It was ok but not super.

After the dinner we went for a walk through the old town and towards Bulevardul Unirii (Unification Boulevard) which was to be Communist Romania's answer to Paris's Avenue des Champs-Élysées.

From there we walked towards the Palace of Parliament. The second largest building of the world. (First is the Pentagon) It was built in order of Nicolae Ceausescu. Two historical quarters, 30 churches monasteries and synagogues and a football stadium had to make place for this mass building. Too much money, crystal, marble went to this building while the whole country was suffering from poverty. The initial use of the building was to host visitors of Ceausescu but the Ceausescu's were executed before the building was finished. (During the revolution of '89)

The day after our colleagues brought us to a nice Romanian restaurant http://www.hanuberarilor.ro/en/ Hanu' Berarilor ( Casa Soare ). Good price, excellent food and cozy atmosphere. Here we took some beers

and we were introduced to the Romanian Palinca, the national spirit drink. After enjoying our dinner and drinks we went to walk through the old town to have some snacks and go to a bar to grab some beers.

On Thursday we had our meeting after office hours at http://www.curteaberarilor.com/en/index.php for dinner and after dinner. Here we tried one of the better local beers, Timisoreana (from the city Timisoara) One of our colleagues brought some home brewed spirit drink, which we called "Organic Rakia" J After the dinner and many beers and "organic rakia" the night was still young and went to some bars.

It took a while to decide the place to go. In the end our colleagues proposed to go out on a Russian way and go to http://www.sanktpetersburgpub.ro/

A nice cozy place with live music. As we had to work the day after we didn't made it too late. (however we would have a hangover anyway😊)

The last day before the weekend I took advantage to walk a bit around in the old city center together with a friend who was living in Bucharest for 2 years. We went to his favorite restaurant,

http://www.carucubere.ro/en/ I must say that this was one of the most authentic restaurants where I have been. Might you visit Bucharest, this place is a must. Good food, good atmosphere and there are some traditional dance shows. All together, for a good Romanian cultural taste, this is the place to be.

After the dinner we went to some bars and pubs in the old center. Please note that in many bars there are 'fake customers', good looking girls who are hired by the owner, who approach you to buy the most expensive drinks to them. After some beers I went back to the hotel as the day after our colleagues had a nice organization for us: a weekend in the Transylvanian mountains.
