This weekend I went to Fatima and Lisbon with Ally, my friend from IES. Call me a pilgrim because I made a pilgrimmage to Fatima. Portugal was an interesting country to visit and I'm glad I had the opportunity to go there. My trip started in teh usual way: I woke up at 4 A.M. and took public transportation to the Barcelona airport. From Lisbon, Ally and I took a bus to Fatima to see the religious sites. Fatima was unlike any religious place I have visited because it was absolutely massive and the entire town of Fatima revolved around the religious history of the town. The buildings in Fatima were all painted white to resemble Heaven and purity. I haven't been to the Vatican in Rome but I've seen pictures of St. Peter's Square and ... read more

Roughin' it up with Hotel Ronda, a tent & beaches In late May Amber, Brittany and I decided to rent a car (AKA Hotel Ronda) in Granada and drive and around Portugal - a country we had all longed to explore. We agreed to spend our money on the car rental (and other associated costs) and therefore not spend any money on accom, since we were all travelling on tight budgets. That's where the tent and beaches come in ... and a bit of couchsurfing (first time for the three of us!). We also decided to open up our trip to others who may have wanted to share the car costs. The night before leaving Granada we had a special offer from a young (21yr old) Polish guy (hippy). This wonderful young soul, who had hitch-hiked ... read more

We were once again lost in a foreign city. We had been trying for the last hour or so to find Mercado do Bolhão in the center of Porto, Portugal. We seem to spend quite a bit of our travels, Frances and I, lost in the bowels of one city or another. Most of the time this is intentional because it is one of the best ways to get away from the maddening crowd, thereby seeing ‘sites’ that the masses tend to miss. (You know who I am referring to, the confused looking German, English, American, etc tourists, seemingly always beefy, always pale white, except for their faces that are always flushed from being herded by their flag-carrying guides.) We were lost again, but this morning was different because we had only a few hours before ... read more

6th November Well what a grand day! Long, very windy road to Sintra, great fun on the bike and no problems parking! I am sure this place must be heaving in the summer, but on a blustery November day it was delightful. We visited the Moorish castle which had loads of steps and great views of Sintra and the palace at Pena. We then went on to the palace Quinta da Regaleira. The palace itself was quite small but it is very elaborate and looks like something out of a fairy tale. The gardens are amazing with fountains, grottoes and statues, a waterfall and secret underground passages leading from inside a massive well. I absolutely loved it and thoroughly enjoyed the gardens even though there were only a few flowers in bloom! There were loads of ... read more

5th November Three more days of driving in the rain and we arrived at Lisbon. On to a campsite near Guincha then took the bike into the city. I was looking forward to visiting Lisbon as it looked really interesting in the guide books. We set off on the bike (no rain forecast), but we ended up dodging heavy showers and sheltering from torrential rain again. We arrived relatively dry but it took all day for Phil's feet to dry out. The city was not what we expected, the medieval bit seemed quite small and was completely fenced off so you couldn't see any of it without paying to get in. I loved the trams though and all the steep little streets, I am glad we had the bike! We also went to have a look ... read more

1st November We headed off towards Geres and the national park. On the way we stopped at Soajo to look at the grain stores (between showers!). Also stopped at Cabecceiras de Basto as we were impressed by the church. The sun actually came out for the drive through the park which took us into Spain and back into Portugal. The windy road to Geres was beautiful with waterfalls and autumn colours but we didn't manage to stop for many photos as it was only just wide enough for Myrtle! ... read more

My motto in traveling is “Though you are a foreigner, always eat like a local.” So, if I am with friends who are natives of the country in which I am traveling, I ask them to order for me what they like to eat. If I am alone, I ask the waiter what they, or the chef, suggest. I end up eating many items that I would never be likely to try in the States, thus adding a delightful richness of experience to my overseas dining. This might seem like an obvious strategy for a traveler, but I think many times we want familiarity in our food and in the process miss out on the delights of a particular country’s food and culture. As an example, I travel regularly to Portugal for work, spending most of ... read more

26th October After another day on the beach in the rain we set off along the coast. We went to get GPL at a garage in Gijon bit it had obviously been bulldozed to make way for a new road! It wasn't much fun driving in the rain so we stopped in Luarca for the night. We parked by the harbour wall and watched the waves lashing over the breakwater. We headed inland and when the rain stopped for a couple of hours Phil decided to fix the toilet, which was leaking. Glad it wasn't my job! On to Lugo in torrential rain. It rained all night and is still raining now. So here I sit, in a lay by next to pile of gravel, wearing three fleeces listening to the endless pounding on the roof. ... read more

On Friday we decided to have a look at the peninsular near Pontevedra. Alas, it was not as pretty as we hoped being endless campsites and hotels, all closed. We spent the night by a beautiful long beach though and I went for a long walk along the sand, watching the surfers and collecting shells. Yesterday we drove down the coast and had to keep stopping to take photos of the massive waves. We parked overnight right next to the sea and you could feel the pounding of the waves vibrating through the van! Today we arrived in Portugal and have stopped at a campsite near Viana do Castelo to do some washing. We just managed to hang it out before the sun went in! I know absolutely no words in Portuguese so I had better ... read more
