MARTINS MONTHLY UPDATE Forget the collapse of the Icelandic banking System and the devaluation of the pound against the Euro. On the 2nd January 2009 real disaster struck Banno -World when we ran out of Yorkshire tea bags The crisis was averted however, on the 5th January when three parcels arrived at the camp reception from home. One of them contained a batch of our favourite brew, and the others, much needed supplies of marmite, mince pies and dove soap (for my sensitive soft skin). Christmas has been and gone. The decorated pine cone and the wire coat hanger have been removed. Life has returned to normal?? The caravan through constant use is showing signs of wear. The front window seals are leaking slightly. The bed is becoming more and more uncomfortable, and the sink seal ... read more

Praia Da Luz , Lagos, Western Algarve. Portugal. (Click on the photos to enlarge) We have come to a standstill. It’s probably why I haven’t updated things in a while. After 3 months of continuous travel we were ready for a time-out so we came here a week earlier than planned in the first week of December and we are probably going to stay until the end of January. Not too hard a decision to make really as this area is one of the warmest in Iberia (although not the driest!). We are in the Western Algarve in Portugal and to our delight it is really rather nice here! More verdant, prettier and friendlier than Spain although disappointingly expensive. Our income is once again shrinking . We have our Icelandic savings back but they are suffering ... read more

It’s weird being out here in Portugal. Not the opening line you would expect is it? It’s weird having your parents pick you up at the airport in their British car and drive without needing a map or arguing over what side of the road to drive on. It’s weird driving to a camping and caravan site with a Pool, Supermarket, Restaurant, Bar and Yoga classes. It’s weird being met on the way in by a very smiley Nigerian woman called Gladys who knows all about you and has been waiting to see you. Its weird climbing into a caravan that you last saw parked on the driveway at home in England. It’s weird watching British telly while drinking a cup of Yorkshire tea after spending a day on a beach in mid-December. It’s weird, but ... read more

Christmas is coming As I write this Donna is annoying me by hanging dangly Christmas decorations above my head. She could seriously find herself part of a dangly decoration herself if she carries on. We have now arrived in Portugal at our Christmas site. It is called Turiscampo, and is near Praia De Luz where Madeleine Mc Cann went missing. Spain (like my ability to learn its language) has been and gone. The Spanish are very busy building roads and rail links at the moment which tends to blight the scenery somewhat. The toll roads are generally in pristine condition and unused, whilst the A roads are always busy. It was a bit of a whistle-stop tour of Spain really. As it got colder we decided to head further south chasing the elusive sun (yes ... read more

I got back from an amazing weekend in Lagos last night around 10 pm and crashed into my bed head first and passed out immediately. We went with a tour company called Discover Sevilla, who had the whole weekend planned to guarantee plenty of booze, lots of sun, surfing, and VIP parties. We got there around 9pm on Friday which gave us plenty of time to get ready for the night ahead. We started off at Nah Nah Bah for dinner and a few drinks and made our way to Joe's Garage where free drinks and games were waiting for us. I took my shot of absinthe (ever) and almost lost my dinner because it was disgusting! My friend Kristen and I danced on the bar like there was no tomorrow, and drank free beer which ... read more

Day 15 - 16 - 17: Lagos - Faro First of all I would like to apologize. Yesterday evening we head into town just for a drink...you now how it goes....you meet some nice people, this time a little bit older than us, and you start sharing experiences...especially because they live in Alicanta You buy one...they buy you two back....you buy one again....I lost count. I swear to the liquor god, Dionysus and to Bacchus, that I will never, and mark my words, never touch the stuff again! So after five or so too strong cocktails somebody said us that the bar had wireless!!! Blogpost time!! Tapping away on the laptop I realized immediately that it was pointless to continue in this state so I posted it and all the picture just to rid of it ... read more

We drove to Lagos from Tavira. There is not much to see along the highway and the main thing to be said is that there isn't much traffic -- I never saw so much as a hint of a traffic jam in this part of the world, despite being here in the middle of the tourist season -- maybe the price of gas is keeping people off the roads. Lagos itself was quite crowded, with good reason, very beautiful location. We went for a walk along the cliff and visited the fort -- obligatory it would seem in every Portuguese town. (luckily I like forts, palaces, castles, etc.) The wind sculptures were nice. The coast has lots of big rock formations and you can walk all along the coast by walking through gaps in the rocks ... read more

We arrived in Lagos at 6:30 starved and worn out with no place to sleep. We got out of the bus station and went on a mission to find food. A swordfish dinner called our name! After we ate we went to look for a hostel; it was two hours, two police officers, too many strangers, and more windy streets than we can count. We arrived exhausted, only to dicover that the owner of the hostel had been taken to the hospital. Fortunitely a neighbour lady took us in, for 20 euros a night we got one bed, a balcony and a spectacular view. Not bad! We went to bed, dirty, thirsty and worn out. In the morning, after a quick shower we were off to discover this beautiful, surreal, hidden wonderland of a town. We ... read more

It is to hot over here! We have left Portugal now and in Spain and yesterday it was hitting 43deg in Saville where we are now so very hot. Well Portugal was pretty much the same heat but no way as bad so was heaps easier for sightseeing. We covered pretty much North to South in the week we had there starting in Porto up the North end. I seemed to be a very old city with all narrow streets and we got lost plenty of times wandering around this place. All the citys in Portugal seem to be very hilly but it made for some great views though of the city from the other side of the river exp when the sun was setting having a couple of beers. We preferred this city more the ... read more
