Our trip to Lagos was one that I will never forget. Before we left, things were chaotic. The original plan was for Hayley, Devin, Susan, Meghan, and myself to rent a car from Jerez and drive it to Lagos where we would meet up with our friend Tegan. The day before we were suppose to depart, Susan tells me that she decided not to go. She made a few excuses but none of them were valid. Susan’s lack of consideration created a huge problem for the rest of us because Susan is the only one of us who is over the age of 21 and therefore, the only person who could sign for the car. We were angry, frustrated, and upset that she put us in this situation less than 24 hours before we were suppose ... read more

Hi y’all!! First I want to let Uncle Rick and Aunt Lyn know that my package was waiting safely for me in my room when I got home from Lagos! What a nice surprise to have! I opened it this morning and that trail mix is right on time because I just finished the trail mix that the girls sent me this weekend! So thank you very much!! I will try to save some of the other goodies for close to Halloween time…although one I will have to take a picture with on October 30th in honor of a certain couple’s anniversary. You two know what I am referring to, but everyone else will just have to wait and see! So, thank you very much for your package! I loved it!! Now, Lagos. What a nice ... read more

Lagos is loose As an Aussie told me earlier in my trip, I could not pass up Lagos because it is loose. There must be a travel show in Australia that spits out this advice because the entire city is Australian with a kiwi or 2 thrown in. I don’t think I need to go to Australia anymore because I have already been there in southern Portugal. The Aussie was right, Lagos was loose- it was a great time. It was a small fishing town with great beaches and a really fun bar and club scene. It reminded me a lot of cabo san lucas minus the large resorts, perhaps Cabo in the 1970’s before anyone ever went on a “90 minute” time share presentation. I had a nice little routine in Lagos. Go to the ... read more

We arrived to Lagos Portugal from Lisbon Portugal by bus on the 5th of April. We used the directions that hostel bookers gave us to find the hostel and somehow managed to get lost. In our defense, we were a bit tired and definitely in shock of how beautiful everything was. Thankfully the size of the town is very small so after we made a loop we figured out where we were and found our guest house. The guest house is located almost directly city center and is right off of a main street. Literally there is no sidewalk so if you step out of the front door without looking you could get squashed by locals driving fast along the one lane streets. We walked in to the guest house through a tiny door that was ... read more

Not much time to write up/add extras to/spell-check these blogs as I'd like but hey, something is better than nothing. Maybe... We woke up somehow to another picture-perfect day; the weather was not supposed to be this good while we were here and so we were happy to see the sun once again. We decided to walk to Luz (pronounced Loosh by the Portuguese) the next town down the coast, over the cliffs. There is a great hiking path that follows the coastline on the towering cliffs all along the Algarve coast. The walk to Luz (video) was gorgeous and took about an hour. Luz itself we found to be a happening little town with a beautifully developed waterfront area. There is a cobblestone promenade (the cobbling here is mind-boggling), Roman ruins dating back to 200AD ... read more

Off early towards Lagos. Booked into campsite just north of Luz and just west of Lagos. Rather run down and a bit muddy after all the rain they’ve had. Moved pitch once because of the noisy youngsters next door and managed to get stuck in the mud! Had to be pulled free by a tractor! Still it’ll do for a couple of nights and will let us get a chance to go into Lagos by bus tomorrow. Sun 2nd Jan Early bus into Lagos for a look around. Nice marina/port area but being a holiday & a Sunday most of the shops were closed. So we took the bus back and went down to the beach at Luz. Spectacular coastline, busy beach area with quite a few surfers. Note much surf but they were making the ... read more

We were delayed on the outskirts of Cordoba by youths who were participating in a local running event. Nonetheless,we found our hotel overlooking Cordoba easily and arrived in warm early evening weather. So we quickly changed and plunged into the chilly outdoor pool. Mary was particularly heroic, but she suffered for it for a few days afterwards. We decided that we had no time to do justice to Cordoba that evening, so we arranged to stay for two days, thus taking a full day to explore the city - and giving us a chance to shake off travel fatigue before the last leg of our journey. Next morning, after watching some keen cyclists tackling the hills round the hotel, we dropped down into town and found a free parking space near the centre of town with ... read more

This past weekend I took an excursion to Lagos, Portugal with 8 others from my CIEE program group. We traveled by bus since Google Maps approximated the travel time as 2 hours 34 minutes by car. In reality it took about 6 hours each way so that was pretty surprising. Luckily everyone was fine with sleeping for most of the ride after having gotten up around 6am that morning to catch the bus. When we arrived in Lagos it was raining pretty steadily so we had to figure out where our hostel was in the rain which took some work. After we got settled in the hostel, the rain stopped for a bit in the afternoon so we took the opportunity to run down to the beach and get thrown around by some pretty large waves. ... read more
