There is no direct train from Vilnius, Lithuania to Warsaw, Poland. We had to change train twice and the second time involved a short bus ride to our third train along narrow dirt roads where our only notice that we had entered Poland was a small sign between farmer’s fields, not because we were being smuggled into the country, we were told by two multi-lingual Lithuanian truck drivers who we shared our first class compartment with, but because a section of the train track was being repaired. We arrived in Warsaw at dusk and, as we left the station, we were greeted by the illuminated Palace of Culture and Science, a building similar in design to the seven sisters in Moscow and known as Stalin’s gift to the people of Poland built in 1955. Our hotel ... read more

When I lived in Arizona, I didn’t visit the Grand Canyon until about a month before leaving the state. I am always so busy with work that I just keep putting personal goals off until the last minute. But once I know I am leaving a place, I can’t put it off any more. So I make sure to see all the major sites before leaving. I have continued this pattern until today. I have been in old town Warsaw for about 4 days only walking in immediate vicinity of old town. So yesterday, I kicked it in gear and started venturing further from my apartment in old town. At first, I preferred Krakow over Warsaw, because there was so many interesting things going on in the city center ... read more

The weather forecast had been promising but it was clearly going to take a while and a breakthrough of the sun to warm the temperature back above the mid teens again. Today we planned a walk through the old and new towns, both reconstructed since the end of World War 2 and then a look at the Jewish ghetto quarter. We have been very impressed by the Warsaw metro for its cleanliness, efficiency and frequency of the trains. Compared to all the other metros we have ridden over the years Warsaw now ranks number one. The metro has just one line for the present, running north/south on the western side of the Wisla, although another line is being built east/west crossing the original line in the area of Centrum. We can imagine that for a city ... read more

The warmth of the last few weeks left us today and when we awoke this morning we thought we might have to break open the ‘winter’ suitcase which has been sitting in the boot of the car since we went to sharing the bigger suitcase to carry in only what we needed for summer clothing. The day started out rather gray and overcast and the outside temperature had halved since yesterday at 13C.It was time to zip the bottom of my trousers on again and Gretchen to break out her sweater. It was amazing how the air temperature had dropped so much and luckily there was no wind to speak of or the chill factor might have made it feel colder. Without a weather forecast we can understand on the TV we have been relying upon ... read more

Today was going to be one of the shorter drives we have had for some days and the route was fairly straight forward with most of the distance on the E372, which originates in L’viv in the Ukraine. We have been getting our own breakfast for the last couple of weeks so to have breakfast included with the room rate was a bit of a change and a bonus although we joked between each other as we went downstairs to the breakfast room that there would probably just be sausage, cheese and hard bread on offer. How wrong we were and we tucked into cereal and fruit and ordered up scrambled eggs when they were offered. The only extra we didn’t have was, toast.Even the coffee was a change to the granulated Nescafe we have lived ... read more

So, shortly after completing my last blog entry on the bus to Warsaw, I received a wonderful phone call from the woman I originally spoke to at Munich airport regarding my lost luggage. It had been found! Of course, I was on my way out of Germany by this point, so the woman arranged to have it delivered to my hostel in Poland. I gave her the address, thanked her for making my day and did my little in-head victory dance. I was originally intending to just get off the bus in Warsaw and rock up to some hostels in search of somewhere to stay, so it's lucky I pre-booked! Everything happens for a reason, eh? The bus ride was pretty straight-forward, again, very unlike any in Asia. We had regular toilet stops (even though there ... read more

Before I arrived in Warsaw, there was one fact that everyone who knows Warsaw (guide books, people I met on the train, and the helpful lady in Tourist Information) was very keen to tell me. This is that Warsaw's Old Town isn't really old at all, but was rebuilt as an identical copy of the Old Town after the original was razed during WWII. I was looking forward to seeing if I could tell, but we could hardly see Warsaw for snow, which was thick everywhere and still coming down unrelentingly. Unable to strughle through it very far with our rucksacks, we instead took one of those red bus tours that every tourist place has. Even that was a struggle - the roads were so bad that the commentary kept getting ahead of the bus, so ... read more

Backpacking, you either love it or hate it. Myself, I tend to switch sides depending on the variables. Lugging the heaving bag behind me, sweat sticking my shirt to my back, dust in my eyes, wanting the sweet relief of clean sheets and a hot shower… but instead arriving in a room shared with 5 other strangers and the shower clogged with hair. The bed sags in the middle and the bunk above has cigarette burns in the slats. Consistently throughout the night the lights flick on and off as roommates come and go, and not always on their own. Each morning you wake with the pungent smell of stale bodies which are strewn across their respective beds, usually an arm or leg hanging over and often a rouge testical or the beginning of a crack ... read more

Po prawie roku odpalam ponownie bloga. Nie, żeby podróże podejmowane w międzyczasie nie załugiwały na opis, ale jakoś nie było nastroju. No i będzie trochę inaczej, bo teraz to blog o podróżach z małąEM.

July 2nd: A decentish sleep under my belt and suddenly the horrible events of yesterday seem little more than a dried dog turd of a memory. I'm staying in the Dutch room (all of the rooms at this hostel are themed, most of them after countries) time to get out of this room see Warsaw! ...Oh, and still very sick, I bought drugs at the airport but I'm not sure if they're helping. -Later- Back at the hostel for a breather, I suppose I don't want to overtax my body; it's the old conflict between wanting to see the sights and wanting my body to recover. This is the first time that I've come to a new city at night and then awakened to see it in the daylight. Warsaw is HUGE I walked across this ... read more
