The first stop was to the capital of Poland. Walking around the city, the first thing that struck me was rather an odd observation. How flat it was. As I gazed down the streets, no a single hill or bump insight. I later discovered this was due to Nazis just about bombing the city into oblivion during WWII. 85%-90% of the buildings were destroyed over the course of the Second World War. To be honest, I found the streets rather ugly and plain. All the building I saw were gone is a very Communist, Soviet Russia, concrete style. I was getting a very unattractive impression of the city until… until I wondered into the Old Town. The Old Town is the area of Warsaw that was untouched by the destructions of war. The town is ... read more

As I mentioned earlier, we set out to visit this capital city of Poland with lowered expectations for a few reasons, (a) some Poles had told us not to bother but to see Krakow instead and (b) I was less interested in the Soviet communist influence on its architecture. But, one should not ignore a capital city that was so devastated in that conflict. And so we arrived by train to its massive main central station then headed out amidst heavy rush hour traffic to find our apartment in the old city. Our area at first appeared to be very typical of a European city apartment living area with nothing special about it to distinct it from anywhere else. However, our apartment was lovely and on the second floor; very clean with everything we needed as ... read more

Day 3 - Dresden to Warsaw Well rested after 6 hours sleep, we headed into the old town of Dresden. The buildings are beautiful, and though in form they have been restored, the different coloured stonework is a constant reminder of one of the most controvertial acts of WWII. We all had an excellent german sausage for breakfast, and once back at the hostel, booked a room in Warsaw for the night and made a few plans. I should say a bit more about this particular hostel, because it was by far the best any of us have stayed in. Called Kangaroo Backpackers, it is owned by a fellow globetrotter, and you can tell: very clean, bright and cosy, helpful and informative staff, free internet, great location close to both the old town and to the ... read more

It was bright and sunny for about 20 minutes on the Sunday morning. The ability of the weather to change was a lot faster than it took to descend from our elevated tower block abode. 27 floors was a long way down. There was a number of opportunities to get a shot of the Palace of Culture in bright sunshine, but the time taken to get down and across the road defeated me on every occasion. Warsaw was soon shrouded in low cloud and mist. The fitness room in the hotel looked the other way over the 2012 National Stadium. Alas that too, never really displayed it's red and white exterior panels to the full effect. The Warsaw Uprising Museum is free entry on Sunday. A logical choice. We sought out the last remaining piece of ... read more

The UK Labour Party has recently announced a Battle Bus as part of their pre-election campaign to highlight and promote women’s issues. There is nothing unusual in that perhaps, except that the bright pink bus drew more attention than any of the background policies behind the initiative. The colour has had more success at Warsaw’s Modlin Airport and the bright pink Scania advertises itself amongst the grey surroundings of the old military airstrip. We had tickets for the 13:50 and we were not sure whether this was the 13:30. The driver seemed unconcerned and 40 minutes later, we were deposited in front of the Soviet architectural masterpiece in central Warsaw that masquerades as the Palace of Culture. At this point, I am normally scolded for selecting a hotel that is too far to walk from the ... read more

For English scroll down. Dziś z serii "Świat wokół nas". Robert zabrał dzieci na wystawę klocków Lego na Stadionie Narodowym. Najpierw byli w grocie solnej - to nasz stały punkt programu zimą. EN Today a post from "World around us" series. Augustow and Warsaw in Poland 4 to 6 September After crossing the Polish border, passing another derelict border crossing building, we soon arived in Augustow. This is a pretty town nestled by a lake and river. The town has cycle paths and walking tracks by the lake and river. We drove into the city centre and parked just off the city square, forgot to look to see if there was a need to pay for parking because it was a smallish town (!!), so got a 35 Polish Zloty parking fine (2.80 Zt to $1 AUD). Oh well! We found someone to ask about paying it. Tom found a pharmacist who spoke good English and she found out where to pay it - job down! The central streets were cobbled stoned, the large town square which ... read more

Our fast modern train zipped us from Berlin, Germany, into next door Poland. In Warsaw we were treating ourselves - to the 5* Westin hotel. And very swanky it was too. The bathroom alone was bigger than our rooms in our next too destinations. Actually, we weren't actually pushing the budget with this one. Our lovely posh hotel room cost less than a room in a hostel. I think it was something to do with it being a Saturday in August in the business district. Less demand for rooms. When planning this trip, I booked all the accommodation and transport in advance, since we only had 12 days to get back to Odessa. I use Booking.com usually, mainly because having booked so many hotel rooms for our weekends in Shanghai, I'm now a booking.com 'Genius' (their ... read more

The six and a half hour train trip from Berlin to Warsaw was an easy way to travel between the two cities. Our hotel was near a lovely street full of outside eating restaurants that seemed to be busy well into the evening. We arrived on the 1st of August when the people of Warsaw pay hommage to the fallen heroes that fought for freedom in 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising. The rebellion against German Nazi occupation during WWII cost over 200,000 lives and destruction of the capital. We were walking in the city when at 5pm the sirens blasted for one minute's silence, everything stopped moving including people walking in the streets, the buses and cars. We noticed people on the buses stood during the minute silence to pay their respect, it was very moving ... read more
