After a comfortable flight filled with music and endless views of blue sky we arrived in Krakow 9am local time. Oh yeh before take off there was a fire at the airport and we had to be hussled out through Fire Exits. I have never used fire exits before and always thought they where a waste of time. It was so cool though coz it was pouring down outside and crazy polish women where going crazy at the airline staff. Anyways the first thing I noticed about Poland was that EVERYONE smokes. I walked outside and there was just a huge haze of grey smog from where everyone had been sitting around smoking. I proceeded to go through and buy a 30 pack Marlboro Lights to fit in. Nah just jokes... would have been FULLY SICK ... read more

More complaining. Don't read if you're offended by mild to medium profanities. :-/ * * * I've started to resent the house I live in. From here on out, "they" refer to my hosts. They only use one garbage can and it's the one in the kitchen. It's always full, sometimes overflowing, and it's most disgusting when the baby's dirty diapers are in there. Today the whole place smelled like rotten food b/c they had 2 sacks of garbage just sitting there. In the kitchen sink, there are always dirty dishes, coffee cups, pots, pan (there is only one pan), baking ware, mugs, utensils, etc. When the sink is full, the plates and bowls are stacked to the sides of the sink. When they do wash the dishes, they do a shitty job. The reverse sides ... read more

(This is going to be boring for most of you, i'm cateloging two meals in two days) I had very little food when I began my Auschwitz day yesterday. A few spoonfuls of left over pasta, a drink, some pretzels, and then a stick of Halvah (chałwa in Polish!). Then off I went. While at the Auschwitz Museum I had a few chances to buy snackies but everything was marked up and I was too cheap, so I opted to wait until I got back to Krakow before eating again. I was sooo hungry while riding the bus (this sounds familiar...) that I started imagining all the different kinds of food I could possibly have when I got back. My mental culinary rolodex. I imagined Chinese food but scratched that pretty quickly (one bad experience already), ... read more

I bought the bus ticket for 9.30 but I missed the bus by almost 30 minutes. This happens a lot, I keep having to rebook tickets, be it plane, bus, or train. I caught the 10.30 bus instead, which was so full that some people stood for the whole ride, and arrived at the Auschwitz Museum a bit after noon. The entry was free, but to join the English speaking tour cost 26 zl. Everytime I join a tour, I end up regretting it, and today was no different. The tour guide lady was very nice and knew everything, but we were lead from one historical spot to the next without really stopping. What did I think of it? I have mixed feelings. First of all, it's not as "solemn" of a place as I had ... read more

Well, I have to say, I'm making slow progress here. Slowly making progress? Which sounds better?? Everyday when I learn a new thing (or new things), I think -- dang it, why didn't I know this earlier! For instance, we learned about how to do time sequences two days ago: How to say, for example,"first I wake up, then I brush my teeth". And something "in morning", something "at noon", something "in the after noon", and something "in the evenings". Had I known this stuff a few days earlier, I could've perhaps potentially possibly likely asked for the proper train/bus tickets for my Easter trip and not been such a mess. Maybe I could've asked, "after this train, another train?" Oh, and I only learned how to pronounce the word for "train" today. It's spelled something ... read more

I heard my lips uttering something I never thought possible: "I'm sad that it's the end of winter." Madness? Perhaps. But until now I had never experienced the mad rush of snowboarding. It's my new favourite thing to do and I wish I could send myself to a slope right now. Eight of us went to Poland to ski and snowboard. Zakopane is the main centre for snow sports in Poland and is about two hours south of Krakow and the mountains there mark the border with Slovakia. We were a bit of a rabble with very tenuous connections linking us all - my roommate was a guy who my friend's friend and boyfriend met after they met his sister while travelling! Luckily we all got along really well. We all shared a similar snowsport ability ... read more

That's it, I'm never coming back to this town again!! I have been invited by a friend to Easter weekend at her place in Kaunas, Lithuania. So last night I bought a train ticket from Krakow to Warsaw (while I was in Krakow still), departing Krakow at 8.00, arriving Warsaw around 10.45. The bus leg time I found online was departing Warsaw at 1.40 and arriving at Kaunas 9.00 next day (Saturday). Following so far? After buying the train ticket, I walked over to the bus ticket place to try and buy the bus ticket from Warsaw to Kaunas. Well, turned out the bus ticket place had already closed, so I had to come by again this morning to buy the bus ticket. So I left class during the break around 11am thinking that it would ... read more

I was up until 2 am last night studying. I only had enough time to cover the nouns and some adjectives but I didn't get around to doing any of the verbs. Which are pretty important, if you think about it b/c without them, you can't really construct any sentences. :-/ Oh why didn't I start earlier!! I woke up early, if you count 7.30 as early, and did some more flashcards, had breakfast, and then went to class. The test was handed out and Marek left us alone in the room to do it. I guess they go by the honor system as well, assuming that we weren't going to cheat. Not that it mattered much; the lowest "grade" we could get was "good". I don't know how well (good, hahaha) I did. The last ... read more

This happened 2 days ago? A bit of background... Wieliczka salt mine has been in operation for over 700 years and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Basically, if you're in the neighborhood, you should go for a visit. Last week the school had organized a trip for everyone to go but I was too tired (I went to Tesco that day instead) and I figured since I have a whole month, I can go anytime. My classmate Vala had wanted to go last week but she somehow missed the bus, so we decided to go together. We were told that perhaps it would be easiest to join a tourgroup for 120 zl/person b/c that way we wouldn't have to worry about anything, everything would be taken care for us. Well, I don't know about Vala, ... read more
