so we arrived earlier today after a 6 hour train ride. second class. yikes. there really just is no way for you to get comfortable next to that many people, at least not me. we came to krakow to see auswitch tommorow, and mom pointed out that we were probably travelling on the same rails they took the jews, since many jews were taken from austria, where we left yesterday. that was a chilling thought. on a different note, people here are friendly, and lucky for us most know bsic english, since last time i checked my polish was about as good as my german. i swear if it weren't for diagrams we would be so hopeleslly lost. thank got for art school, yeah! also, it's cool here, seriously, i even needed a sweater today!!! it ... read more

The shock of trying to learn two languages in two days has gotten to me. Polish may be as difficult as German, but the words aren't as long and it sure is more pleasant to the ear. Not to mention that the Polish people are like a different species when it comes to friendliness. Germans just make me nervous, they glare...I wonder if they they know how to smiile. Six hours in second class on the train is not a fun time. You have to get up and walk the corridor occasionally just to keep from cramping up, but we made it. At least we didn't have an incessant cell-phone chatter this time, and no loud young adults, and no babies. We were going to stay two days in Krakow but since we got here at ... read more

Well today was pretty intense the amount of people that died at that concentration camp is unreal i dont how that was aloud to happen. We got to see the death wall where everyone was shot and the women had to strip down then were takin to the gas chamber and the men stripped down then were shot right there or takin to the wall. There was about 4000lbs of hair from everyone before they where killed so when they were incenerated it wouldnt smell terrible. This camp was nuts the amount of security they had there was retarted, 2 barb wire fences back to back and then the brick wall another ten feet away and the guard towers were right there so the people wouldnt get out at all, the prisoners that tried to escape ... read more

BACK IN THE HABIT Met cousin no. 2, Alex, in Jaroslaw, Poland, who delighted in presenting me with my travel tales to her students like a show and tell. Alex teaches English in a convent/school under the same order of nuns as her sister Jac, but the difference in attitudes of the nuns were profound. Some just live too cloistered a life. Went away for the weekend with some teachers and nuns to a country town called Jemna. No khaki habits, but it didn't stop them from bush bashing and mounting large rocky boulders in very impressive fashion. PRIEST AND NUN GO MISSING While Alex and I taught one nun to throw her hands in the air and say in her best thick Polish accent ''I am a champion'', a search was out for our priest ... read more

its raining right now and theres a bunch of thunder and lightning. All this after it was 90 degrees the whole day. Everyone was sweating and we waited the whole day to go out. A few others just left to go to the school bar, but i decided to finally take a break from going out, my first one since we got here. Saturday was a wild day. We had to wake up early to be at the main square at 9am for a tour of the square and the Wawel Castle. Our professors ended up seeing one of his friends on the way and afterward she took us to this hostel/bar. The owner is her son-in-law. His name is Nathan, from Boston and he has like 3 hostel/bars around Europe. Businessman/entrepreneaur. So he showed us ... read more

Wierzynek 1364 This is the name of the oldest restaurant in Krakow. It's a really nice looking place on the main square and I would say that the prices are not extremely highend for Poland but rather mid-range Bay Area eating out prices. Here is where the students who had signed up with PROLOG got their free "welcome dinner". Mother and I went there last night for dinner, just to see what it's like, and to be able to say, hey we ate at the oldest restaurant in Krakow! :-p 1364 is supposedly the year when it first began. They have a website, if you google it, you can see the history lesson they dish out for yourself. I ordered what amounted to a cream of mushroom soup, and a Polish style (prepared) pike. Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Zakopane June 24th 2006

Went to Zakopane with Mother. 2+ hours to get there. In the winter, Zakopane is supposedly the skiing capital of Poland. I had 2 chances to go to Zakopane with my class. The first chance I passed on because I was totally wiped out from a whole week fo Polish lessons, and just the weekend before I had been on the 20+ bus ride in from Estonia.. Not in the mood to travel far. Then I hear from the folks who had gone that it wasn't exactly enjoyable, more like a forced march up the side of the mountain and then a treacherous retreat from its icy slopes. Some older lady with the wrong shoes ended up sliding on her ass down the hill. No thanks. I don't like frostbite on my delicate parts. So that's ... read more
