I took a daytrıp by myself to Auschwıtz as Emıly told me she could not handle goıng. I would say ıt was defınately one of the thıngs I was most ınterested ın doıng ın Europe. Of course there are so many books and movıes wrıtten about the holocaust you could say ´Yeah yeah I know I know´, but actually seeıng ıt ın person was some what lıfe changıng. Seeıng the realıty of ıt all was unreal. I defınitely look at thıs through a dıfferent perspectıve and I am glad I was able to travel here. I would lıke to go back one day because I feel lıke I mıssed many parts of the camp that were not covered ın my guıded tour. I would recommend, ıf you can handle, to vısıt thıs sıte. When we left warsaw, Tomek told us that it was better to drive South for a couple hours then go NE to go to Berlin as the roads were much better and no construction. He recommended spending a couple hours in Wroclaw on the way. However, when daddy was driving he realized that it would be less than 30 minutes out of the way to go to Auschwitz and he thought this was better than stopping in a city for a few hours. Daddy tried to explain to me about Auschwitz. He told me about a very bad person named Hitler who lived a long time ago and hated a lot of people. Hitler, and people who worked for him, hurt and killed many people for no good reason. I kept asking why, and the only ... read more

A very moving experience, but I do recommend that you visit the camps, especially if you're interested in the WWII history. Also, everything you read in the textbooks and other sources, and the pictures you see - believe me they are nothing in comparison to what it's like in reality. When you're there, you honestly can't believe that human beings are able to take such dramatic actions.... read more

Today we were picked up from our lovely little pension in the middle of nowhere (Teplice) and driven off in private mini vans towards Krakow, which would be our new home for the night. The vans were driven by two lovely guys, and our driver was just hilarious. He had a real sense of humour on him. Most of the day was spent driving from the Czech Republic into Poland (although we did cross the border only 1 hour after we left Teplice). However we had a pretty major stop to make on the way. Auschwitz. Now I had been really looking forward to going to Auschwitz and I had a pretty clear image in my mind of what the camp would look like. For some reason I was picturing a dark and gloomy castle, perched ... read more

Oswiecim is a name not many people know, but it is the actual name of the place where the infamous nazi death camps, Auschwitz, Monowitz and Birkenau are located. It started as a POW camp in April 1940, but due to its location and other reasons, it evovled with the assistance of nazi efficiency to murder, slaughter, kill, exterminate jewish people and other people viewed as undesirable. Between all three camps between 1.1 million people and 2 million people were subjected to hard labour, starvation and then the gas chambers to solve what hitler called "the answer to the jewish problem". Roughly the current population of Western Australia. The one of the most disturbing facts - is the sheer size of the Birkenau camp. A photo which I will post later from one at the entrance ... read more

The town of Oswiecim, Poland is just 50 kilometers from Krakow. It's brick barracks were built before the second World War, as barracks for the Polish Army. This little village, has grown into a small town over the last 65 years. And each day thousands of people from literally all over the world find their way here. To see for themselves, and to remember those that died. The numbers of the victims are subject of controversy. But this facility claims more victims of the Nazis, than any other such camp. It was built for slave labor and for extermination. Now the memorial and museum at Auschwitz-Birkenau stands as a reminder. Memorial plagues at Birkenau state in 21 languages "...let this place be a warning to humanity..." 21 countries have victims in Auschwitz-Birkenau. In his book, "Night" ... read more

My first impression on Poland was not the most positive. I quote the page I wrote on my diary the day I crossed the Polish border. I apologize beforehand in case someone was to find it politically incorrect. Friday, October 3rd "The weather has changed, this time the forecast was accurate. It drizzled all day, nothing unbearable, but annoying enough to make me end the day at Kostrzyn, Poland, 30 kms ahead of schedule. Kostrzyn is one of the ugliest towns I’ve ever set foot in: the Soviet building-bunkers add up here not just to the 20% of the overall as it is in the former DDR, but to its 80% instead. In a bakery shop, while I was having a snack and dreaming of the huge tits of the blonde baker, a man walked in ... read more

Vnos s podobnim naslovom sem enkrat e zapisala. Po vseh mrzlično prebranih knjigah, teko gledljivih filmih in neizogibnih zgodovinskih lekcijah sem v kraju, o katerem vem premnogo, a še vedno le v teoriji. Čas je bil za prakso. Za preverjanje znanja. In lastne eksistence. Hodili smo od bloka do bloka, bolj na hitro, ... read more

"One who does not remember history, is bound to live through it again." George Cantayana This is a more somber blog. Today we vistied Aushcwtiz and Birkenau which where the largest of the Nazi concentration camps during WWII. It is a very real and very heavy place. As we walked and listened to our guide i often found myself not listening and trying to image what it was like for the people during that time. There is no way I could ever begin to know what these martyrs went through. For people to believe this didn't happen is beyond me. Millions of people lost their lives, not because of things they did but because of who they where. Innocent people where murdered mercilessly because they where different. This is not a normal blog but today was ... read more
