Today we set out on our last big drive in Poland and what a beautiful morning it turned out to be after last night’s thunderstorm. We were up really early to check for any evidence that we had not had company during the night and finding none showered, packed and left our emergency accommodation. Looking back on our night’s accommodation we had to agree it had one of the strongest free wifi internet connections so far and an over-supply of wall sockets. As we depart Kwidzyn we can now laugh about our time in this town. Perhaps we have the wrong impression but our first experience was not a good one. By the time we had checked into our next hotel we had received an emailed apology from the pension. They had not received our reservation ... read more

We're slowly getting ready for our vacation! I know there's still some time to go, but it's getting closer everyday. This year we're flying to the Spanish island of Fuerteventura. For the first time ever we decided to choose an all inclusive resort, mainly because of our kids. It seems to be a lot easier when everything is there for you whenever you need it, but we do have some doubts. We'll see how it works out in reality. When choosing the resort we went through a number of catalogues, and also had a look at quite a few websites (check out Best All Inclusive Resorts, they provide some pretty good info and tips on choosing the right type of resort). Anyway, we decided to go for one in Cala De Fuste (I don't know if ... read more

So we went to Poznan Saturday morning and just came back this morning with an hour to spare before teaching. Poznan was nice, the prettiest town square out we've seen so far I think but all of these cities look similar already. We went to see Des's favorite singer Frank Turner give a show last night. Folk music is not exactly my cup of tea but Des loveddd him. The best parts of the city were the City Hall building in the center of the square that was built in the 1551 I think. Also, every day at noon, since the building was built, 2 goats come out of the clock tower and headbutt each other as the bells ring. Then they have some special bugle call. Apparently this is a famous sight because the crowd ... read more

**Krakow pictures on the Warsaw blog, for some odd reason. I think I have mastered the art of surreptitiously taking pictures. Although I agree with the practice of museums and palaces of this region to force visitors to pay an additional fee in order to take pictures on economic principles, it adds to the experience when one has to try and not get caught taking these "illegal" photos. Having experimented with everything from blind behind the back photography to snapping a photo behind a tall man who himself is legally taking a picture, I have managed to hash out the inferior methods. Thus, you all get to experience underground mines and Romanian castles with your own eyes, rather than via my all too abrupt descriptive skills. Arrived in Krakow on Sunday the 20th from Warsaw around ... read more

Owa technologia specj... read more

I made a last minute trip to visit my friends in Poznan before leaving Europe and returning home to the United States. Before I left, I wrote down her address on my ticket and left for the train station. I boarded the train and looked out the window at the winter wonderland until it was dark. I was switching trains in Wroclaw, so I knew that I shouldn't fall asleep! To my horror, the train stopped in the middle of no where and I heard mixes of Polish and Czech. I stepped out of my cabin to see what was going on.. and the conductor just spoke to me in Czech. "Ne, ne Anglicky." He should his head and pushed me in the direction of the door. No one spoke English, but it was clear that ... read more

In the forest near Poznan, 25-07-2001. With only four hundert kilometers to Belin and five days of holiday left, there is no reason to hurry, no particular moment of doubt about the end of this trip. I can take the back roads through the dark green pine forests so abundant in Northern Poland. Maybe even cycle the remaining six hundert kilometers from Berlin to Amsterdam instead of using my return ticket by train. Would certainly improve my status as a super-wanderer among my alley-cat - bicycle messenger in Amsterdam speak - amigos back home. Not really the way I see it though...just enjoy being in motion, enjoy experiencing new emotions, discovering the newness of things, meeting new people - not all of them nice but then neither am I. New cultures and traditions change the moment ... read more

We left Prague on Tuesday morning and rode a train for 9 hours to Poznan, connecting through Berlin. The main train station in Berlin where we transferred is ENORMOUS, like a small city - super crowded with all sorts of restaurants and shops. Nine hours is a LONG time to be on a train, especially when worn out. We weren’t able to both doze off for a nap, as we’ve heard a few horror stories from fellow travelers that it’s best for at least one person in a group to stay awake on the train to make sure nobody steals anything while you are sleeping. There are stories of people waking up to find that somebody used a sharp knife to slice open their backpack and luggage and steal things while asleep. I have to wonder ... read more

So. A friend of mine, Magda, from my heady days of 'studying' in Holland said she might come and meet me while im in Berlin. For work related reasons, she couldnt make it, but she did invite me to come and visit her in Poland (mostly to show off her new place i think). So soon after we repaired the bikes in Berlin we went to the central train station in Berlin (HBF) and i looked up and bought tickets (with very little time to spare). All three of us ran downstairs to sample some local cuisine (the McRib and two Big Macs). While in the cue a german girl randomly came up to us saying hi and asking us about Ireland (the accents stand out im told) and she also ate with us. She was ... read more
