Background: Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004.

Chris: Had a bit of a lie in at the Cinnamon Hostel then I went to the Market Square to see the famous (ish) townhall clock strike 12 and the model goats that perform in the old townhall clock tower. It was just about worth the 10 minute walk to see. They basically come out to a fanfare, bow and then jiggle about a bit in mock aggression, butting-heads occaisionally. It reminded me slightly of the fight scenes in Team America, but would have been quite entertaining to your average medieval peasant. Meanwhile Shems had been writing to potential help exchange [View Full Entry]

Chris: Big move. Got up early and went to Alexander Platz to get a replacement for the late lamented camera that was lost on the first day of the trip. Bought the camera, at a bargain 179 Euros cash. This is because in Germanys, even the largest chains refuse to accept credit cards... bizzare! Imagine turning up to buy an Apple product - with 2 grand cash! So after purchasing the wonder camera we headed back to buy surprisingly inexpensive train tickets to Poznan in Poland. The trip from germany to Poland was interesting. We sat in a 6 seater cabin [View Full Entry]

Very serious indeed Europe » Poland » Greater Poland » Poznan
In the forest near Poznan, 25-07-2001. With only four hundert kilometers to Belin and five days of holiday left, there is no reason to hurry, no particular moment of doubt about the end of this trip. I can take the back roads through the dark green pine forests so abundant in Northern Poland. Maybe even cycle the remaining six hundert kilometers from Berlin to Amsterdam instead of using my return ticket by train. Would certainly improve my status as a super-wanderer among my alley-cat - bicycle messenger in Amsterdam speak - amigos back home. Not really the way I see it [View Full Entry]

Owl on the hunt

We left Prague on Tuesday morning and rode a train for 9 hours to Poznan, connecting through Berlin. The main train station in Berlin where we transferred is ENORMOUS, like a small city - super crowded with all sorts of restaurants and shops. Nine hours is a LONG time to be on a train, especially when worn out. We weren’t able to both doze off for a nap, as we’ve heard a few horror stories from fellow travelers that it’s best for at least one person in a group to stay awake on the train to make sure nobody steals anything [View Full Entry]

Hanging out with Monica

So. A friend of mine, Magda, from my heady days of 'studying' in Holland said she might come and meet me while im in Berlin. For work related reasons, she couldnt make it, but she did invite me to come and visit her in Poland (mostly to show off her new place i think). So soon after we repaired the bikes in Berlin we went to the central train station in Berlin (HBF) and i looked up and bought tickets (with very little time to spare). All three of us ran downstairs to sample some local cuisine (the McRib and two [View Full Entry]

Short facts: Participants: Me and my mentor Katarzyna Destination: Poznan, Poland Length of the trip: 3days Distance: 275 km from Warsaw to Poznan Music: Queen Adreena, Nirvana and silence Reading: National Geographic and Pravda Day 1 I came to Poznan about 10 pm and my hostess from couchsurfing met me in train station. She lives not far from Katedra so the first small sightseeing was on a way home, I think churches look even better at night. First evening I spent at her place drinking tea and getting to know each other. The next morning I was not in a hurry, [View Full Entry]

Lara and I travelled from the port at Rostock to Berlin, where we went to see the Reichstag and the Brandenburg gate as well as a piece of the Berlin wall.
