I have now officially completed a full week + 1 day here at VHSS, despite the fact that I still can't understand most of what is being said, words I know are gradually being intermingled in the sea of words I can't understand when people are talking. Despite this, I still feel like I am connecting with some of the patients, and definitly with the co-workers (who can all at least understand and speak SOME english.) Since the program I am working with is a skiing based program, Friday involved various ski related activities that we did throughout the day such as skiing out to a Sami Hut (Sami are like inuit Linds - very good).. I have included a picture of the traditional "sami" uniform from a museum I was at in Oslo. They were ... read more

I have now been here for 4 days (wow - it seems like longer) and I think I may have a friend. By this I mean I have someone who actually talks to me in English when I sit down at meals! She is one of the patients in the group I am working with, a teenage girl with cerebral palsy and mobility issues. We bonded over Harry Potter - what else would you expect? She taught me the words "Humlesnurr" (Hoom-le-snooreh) which means Dumbledore, and Hermine (Her-meen-ah) which is Hermione. I know right? bffs. She also taught me a lot about Norway FOR EXAMPLE: Here, on Christmas, (WHICH IS CELEBRATED DEC 24th).. apparently Norwegian Jesus was born early.. kids wait until the END of the day to open presents! But she told me that instead ... read more

Valnesfjord Helsesportssenter is an institution that works with people of all ages with disabilities. Norway has an amazing system of healthcare, things are very expensive here, lots of tax. However, going to the hospital for any reason, or any time of medical thing or rehabilitation is all free - you don't even need a health card. Norwegians think that the idea of "suing" other people is crazy. Seriously - they don't understand it. But the good news is that they think it's all an American thing.. as one girl said "the americans - aren't they the ones who walk around suing each other" I try to encourage this way of thinking. Anyways, this institution is free for people with disabilities - it would be prescribed by their physician and then they come here to stay. The ... read more

Telenor. Imagine, if you will, innocently trying to fill up your pay-as-you-go plan. first, you go to the website that's not in english, and 2 hours later, courtesy of google translate and some stellar intuitive skills, you get to the part where you have to pay.. then it won't let you. Then, you still with me? ,, you try to find the number to call. Since your pay as you go plan has run out of money, you have to use the SIM card from back home.. i can only imagine what this costs.. when you get to the automated system that...you guessed it... is only in Norwegian. My strategy was to start at 1, and press 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9, and then 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. Somewhere along there this combination of random numbers got me to a person.. who explained ... read more

A few minutes ago I realized I was about 45 minutes early, hence getting out the computer. Our last day in Svolvaer was a gloomy one, cold and wet all day long. We still managed to hike down into town with our Dutch friend Paul who was also staying at our Bed and Breakfast, walk around, get soaked, look at some of the ... read more

Good Sweet Lord I am exhausted. First off I would like to comment on the raw beef meal from 2 days ago. It was called "beef Carpaccio" as I just looked it up, so some of the food connoisseurs among my vast audience may have known that it was going to be raw. For the rest of us I have a picture. On to today - the day started off with our free breaky which consisted of Cheese, cheese and more cheese (nom). This included Gouda, goat cheese and some delicious norwegian cheese, rye bread, jams and some Granola. And obviously coffee. We decided to go cross country skiing in the mountains because fishing wasn't available and we couldn't rent snowboarding equipment anywhere. We set off with some food packed as well as layers, and my ... read more

First of all, I would just like to commemorate the northern lights for being so elusive. I’ll get you you sneaky little guys. After changing all my camera settings to Northern Lights settings (not that easy!) I waited and waited but sadly – no lights. . The ship I am on is called Hurtigruten – or, hunting the light. Apparently paying for a cruise ship won’t evennnnn guarantee northern lights. What a rip off. I did, however, get to visit the lovely town of Tromsø last night around midnight. Most of the other passengers went on a “midnight concert excursion” at a local church, but we decided that was too much to pay so we just walked to the church instead. On the way, because apparently we stick out with my “Canada” toque and giant camera ... read more

Hello friends! I am writing from the deck of my cruise boat, currently chugging along past Hammerfest south down the Western coast of Norway! (so yes - we have arrived safely). This blog is part of my alternative practicum for Queen's - so I will try my best to keep it up to date and PG. The trip so far has gone without many problems..The 8 hour plane ride from Toronto to Paris started off pretty well when I realized that Harry Potter 7 was available as one of the many movie selections. Then we got our meal and things got better still, Alix you will be able to see why. We arrived in Paris and immediately headed out on the RER (subway). After a 45 minute subway ride we arrived right at Notre Dame Cathedral. ... read more

Sometimes Barry and I plan our trips months in advance, other times it is a matter of weeks. In this case, it was just 4 weeks beforehand when Barry read an article in Wanderlust magazine saying that this is a good time of year to head to Tromso. Roll on 12 February and we found ourselves on a flight heading from London Gatwick (latitude 51 degrees) to Tromso in Norway (latitude 70 degrees north – some 300km inside the Arctic circle, and a mere 2,000km from the North Pole). We spent 4 days enjoying the sights and adventures on offer in Tromso. During our time we experienced downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, hiking in the snow and searching for the Northern Lights. As the pictures show, we were pretty successful at all of these! We really enjoyed ... read more

Bodo This morning we were woken just in time to go on deck to see the little rock with an illuminated globe on it which marked the beginning of the Arctic Circle. It was bitter and snowing a little. We had breakfast and then returned to the upper deck for a small ceremony (involving Neptune for some reason) to mark the Arctic passage. There was a prize for the best guess of our time to cross the line. We were way off in our guesses. Admittedly it was difficult to guess because the ship was delayed during the night by the need to stop at one of the small ports to take a pregnant woman off who was about to give birth! Everything seems to happen on this voyage. After the prize was presented there was ... read more
