Happy Father's Day, to all the Fathers reading about our adventure. We arrived in Honningsvag Norway, which is also known as North Cape. This sits on the north part of Norway, between the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea. There had originally been one more port on our cruise even further north, but it was cancelled some time ago for "environmental reasons". It's been light at night lately, but tonight we will try to actually get a photo of the sun at midnight from this northern most location. The excursion we have booked today is a dinner on shore, so we had most of the day to do whatever we wanted on the ship. Janet got to spend some time with a few of her knitting friends. We also worked on the BLOG from yesterday. We ... read more

After I had done some research it was agreed we would sign up to go to North Cape. North Cape is the northern most point of Europe and is marked by a globe. The globe was erected in 1977 and has now become the symbol of the North Cape. The North Cape is the point where the Norwegian Sea and part of the Atlantic Ocean meet the Barents Sea. Now this is nothing to do with the North Cape but a dilemma I have had since we have been on the ship. So this is a question for all the chefs out there. How do they keep eggs runny? There are two bowls of eggs, one bowl with hard boiled eggs and one with soft boiled eggs. Every morning soft boiled eggs are in bubbling water ... read more

Day 6 of our cruise of the Arctic Circle with MS Kong Harald, and we sailed through Oksfjord and Hammerfest during the night. After breakfast, there's a Point of Interest talk on Deck 7, as we sail through Mageroysundet, about the Sami people and reindeers. It was really interesting but don't ask me to quote any fun facts, unfortunately I don't retain information unless I write it down. We arrrive in Honningsvag at 11.15am and have another shore excursion booked - The North Cape. This is one of the northernmost points on the European continent and during our 45minutes bus trip we marvelled at the spectacular sub-Arctic landscape. The latitude is North 71.10.21 degrees and the plateau itself soars 307 metres, almost vertically, above the Arctic Ocean. The North Cape is the point where the Norwegian ... read more

Today we arrived in Honningsvåg, which is a port on the island of Magerøy (Meagre Island), or the Nordkapp (North Cape), the most Northern place in Europe - depending on who you talk to. Others may argue this point really is 2000 km north in Svalbard and my money’s on them to win this heated debate. Someone tried to say that this is the most northern part of mainland Europe, but actually it’s an island, so they got that wrong too - although connected with a tunnel. The name came from some sailor (Richard Chancellor) trying to find a northeastern passage through to India in 1533, who named it the North Cape. He never made it to India, so a failure all round. We disembarked at 8am to an incredibly quiet town except for the noise ... read more

Cruise day 7 North Cape exploring, giant crabs and reindeer hearts July 21st 2019 We ventured ashore again today as we had arrived in Honnigsvag. There had been a few Fred Olsen tours but none we really fancied. Claire had looked on Tripadvisor and found a company called Blue Puffin which sounded like something more our style....and they had good reviews. After breakfast we got off the ship and had a wander until our guide turned up. It turned out there were only four of us and we were in a minibus which was great and so much better than a big coach. This meant we could stop when we want to get photos and go to more places as well, giving it more of a personal touch. We got lots of information on life here ... read more

After staying up till gone 2am waiting for a sun that never arrived, I woke around 10am to find it was back. Phew! It’s still warm in the arctic circle but when the sun goes behind the clouds, it can be a little breezy and maybe time to put the shorts away. Glyn and I have yet another favourite spot, now the back of deck 10 where the fjord and landscape drifts by as we gazed at it. We had a few visitors but I was able to blog, take photos and read! Afterwards I took the many flights down to deck 3 where our cabin is situated, changed into warm clothing, then climbed back up to Deck 10, where it got really hot again. I passed a man on the stairs who uses them for ... read more

The ship docked at Honningsvag. This little village boasts 2.5 supermarkets and 5 pubs. The locals make their living through fishing and the production of Stock Fish. Stockfish is unsalted air dried fish. It lasts for a long time and is easily re-constituted into moist fish. We had some on the ship – both dried and re-constituted. The dried stuff is a great way to carry and consume protein without worrying about it going off. We travelled to the North Cape in a bus. There were 3 buses in total from the ship. North cape is the most northern part of Norway and continental Europe. The latitude is N 71.10.21 degrees. The North Cape is the point where the Norwegian Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, meets the Barents Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean. It ... read more

Following all day at sea yesterday and cruising overnight we docked in Honningsvag at 8:00am and by 9:00am we were cleared to leave the ship. No - we haven't left the rain behind in Russia, as today was very overcast and misty with intermittent showers. The high for the day was 9C and this is Summer. Honningsgvag is located on the large island of Mageroya in the extreme northern reaches of Norway and is a small, tight-knit fishing community with colourful hillside homes overlooking the harbour and Barents Sea After the restrictions of not being able to leave the ship in any of the Russian ports unless we were on a organised tour, and even those with a Russian visa were unable to just wander about and also had to have proof of a tour organised ... read more
