In 1995 my friend was telling me that when he was on his way to safari in Africa, they had a layover in Amsterdam. Dave told me how beautiful it was flying into Amsterdam because he could see all of the tulip fields. He knew that tulips were one of my favorite flowers and had given me a couple of postcards from Amsterdam. I decided that at some point, I'd have to add Holland to my list of travels. Fast foward to late 2002, I was surfing the web and there was a travel special that was so darn good. The catch is, the choice was either Paris or Amsterdam. I wanted both, but I decided to visit Amsterdam. I knew I wanted to go during April or May to catch the tulips in full bloom. ... read more

Hi everybody, ve're in Holland... isn't dat vvveeeiiirdd? (Goldmember, Austin Powers 3) Since the last email - Amsterdam, Netherlands - Rhine Valley, Germany This will be brief I promise. Not because i worry about your lack of patience reading my verbose emails, but because my po' ass can't afford all these internet cafes! in germany (where we are now) its 2 euros for 16 minutes. thats $3 for 16 minutes! if they charged this much back at home, i'd be broke after one day at work. haahah... well anyway, T and i met up with our contiki tour group. so far, everyone is really cool. the guide said that over 12 nationalites are represented in our group of 52. mostly aussies, some americans, bunch of south africans, mexicans, and some japanese. its really cool hanging out ... read more

Eurorail 2002 - Photos from: Amsterdam, Breda & Bruges... A 3 week escapade on Eurorail and night trains beginning in Amsterdam, then journeying through Paris to Lyon. After that, onto the Cote d'Azure through Marseilles to camp (and enjoy the "tent fever") in Antibes, Cannes, Nice and Monte Carlo before riding the North Mediterranean coast to Barcelona. After that, a mother of a train ride through France and Belgium to land just back across the Southern border of the Netherlands again to revisit an old stomping ground: Breda. From there, a penultimate jaunt up to Bruges then home from Brussels.... phew!!... read more

Like other European capitals, Amsterdam certainly has a distinct atmosphere defined by its architecture. Its sedated pace is created not by the overflowing coffee shops, but by the locution - boats inching down the canals, bike lane with long limbed Dutch riding to work, streetcars grinding along the tracks, ususally leaving only one tight lane for cars to squeeze through. The museums are quite good but I recommend walks outside of the city center, and a trip to Rotterdam for a more authentic window into Dutch life. There are more photos below.... read more

YOU CAN CLICK ON ANY PHOTO TO ENLARGE IT, THEN GO BACK TO THE JOURNAL OR GO THROUGH THE PHOTOS (CLICK ON THE NUMBERS AT THE TOP) IN THAT ENLARGED FORMAT. Again, this is part of my attempt to chronicle our five years of living outside the USA (June 2001 - June 2006). I've already done our final year, which was South Africa (click on "Previous Entries" top left of this blog page and you can see other blog entries). Now I'm going back to the beginning, looking through old journals and photos to put our adventures, one by one, into blog form.

Tassen insealen, inchecken, douane.

Amsterdam Having waved goodbye to my girlfriend Cat’s dad at Waterloo, we trekked to Luton Airport to be met with the most rubbish airport in the world. It makes flying about as glamorous as shopping in Lidl or Aldi or something. Although Cat said they had very nice toilets, so top marks Luton for arse facilities. When we arrived in Amsterdam we immediately found our hostel and spread our shite everywhere. The 20 bed dorm was surprisingly cosy yet we had privacy (ish), although there was a clear Amsterdam casualty in the bed next to me who was always in bed and stared at me ALL the time. She was bald and had bug eyes on stalks. On the way into town I passed a stuffed reindeer. Had my picture taken with it. He looks like ... read more
