I think the pictures will show you all just how amazing Queens Day is in Amsterdam. But for a bit of a run down, here is the description of what we saw. We started the day getting a feel for what Queens Day is traditionally about - The Queen of Holland and her extensive Royal family go to two different small towns within Holland on this day each year, and join in local festivities. Watching this live broadcast on their TV as fascintating as due to being Australian, we didnt even know who they were, and yet they are massive celebraties in Europe. Sylvia gave us a bit of a run down on who all the family members were. Then, we got down to business - seeing Amsterdam in all her glory in the Celebrations ... read more

We stayed in these log cabins in the middle of the forrest.....which for the first night we froze our ARSES OFF!!! Until Melissa comes along the next night and points out the cabin actually has a heating system that we could've just turned on LOLZ!!!! The nice thing about these cabins, is that when you woke up in the morning and opened your door there would be loads of cute little bunnies hopping about:-) So yes did we try the cafes.....well we walked into them and thats all I'm gonna say lolz!!!! ... read more

Craig's mother's cousin Sylvia who has lived in Amsterdam all her life was kind enough to spend several days with us showing us her much beloved city. And you can see why she loves it so much. Firstly she took us to the flower markets which were amazingly cheap for such gorgeous tulips. We then walked through the art markets before finding a secret door that took us into a little oasis - a circular block of apartments with a garden and church in the middle. This block of homes in the past were homes ONLY for Catholic single women (see the statue in the photo of how the ladies use to dress), and even today you can only live there if you are Catholic and single. This courtyard is also home to a 'secret' ... read more

It had been planned that we stay with Alicia's family in the Netherlands for 8 nights. We slept at Diny's house and spent most days with Tante Ali and Oom Joost. Tante Ali and Oom Joost are Alicia's dad's auntie and uncle and Diny is their daughter, which makes her Alicia's dad's cousin. And following on from the equation, this makes Diny Alicia's 2nd cousin (which you probably could have worked out for yourself!). Diny has 2 children - Alice and Wim. Alice is about a year younger than us and was away at university for most of our stay with them, but we eventually got to meet her the weekend before we left for Bremen. Wim, however was at home for our entire stay. He is 17 years old and could speak very good english ... read more

With the congress closed, allowing Caroline and I to stop chasing Mum with a pad and paper as she would vocalise her “notes to self”, I set out on a potter day while Mum spent the day visiting hospitals with Sue. Up this street, down the next, it always is the best way to find the quirkiest corners by hiding the map, but not very time efficient, as I didn’t make it in time to visit Anne Franks house or The Hidden Catholic Church, instead getting back to The Dam just in time for dinner with the girls to plan our trip to the Tulips! Looking at the menu in proved a slight side step! Mum knew the word for raw, to which we avoided, and she ended up with a beautiful chicken salad! Not ... read more

Cycling from Brugge to Maastricht was a breeze, literally, a nice strong hot tail wind blowing us across the flat plains, giving us a false sense of confidence in our abilities! We lost count of the border crossings as the border between Belgium and Netherlands is somewhat fluid and undefinable. The roads in both countries are perfectly designed for cycling, every road caters for cyclists (and cars give way to cyclists!) but the most impressive thing was crossing under the river into Antwerp where we had to use a special lift for cyclists, then cycle under the river to the other side. The campground just outside Maastricht where we are staying is more like a little community, well kept little chalets amidst the forest setting, and I woke up to red squirrels chasing each other through ... read more

Hi all, sorry it took so long to blog but we haven't been able to find cheap enough internet cafes to let us spend enough time to log in and put on a blog. To cut a long story short....... When we arrived in Ireland, we couldn't get money out of the ATM as it rejected my card and ate Teresa's. After spending 2 1/2 hrs at the airport sorting everything out we finally made it to the hostel and on to the 6-day tour. The tour guide was fantastic - hilarious and very knowledgeable. We went to Belfast first where we went into the Protestant and Catholic areas via a black taxi tour - highly recommend this for anyone heading to Ireland, especially Northern Ireland. Then we went to Derry for a night, where again ... read more

Geo: 52.4292, 4.77933Very good hostel breakfast - 3 cheeses and meats, assorted buns and bread (I stuck to the multi-grain bread), plain yogurt, cereal, juice, coffee, biscuits and even hard boiled eggs. Mmmm ... the last time I ate a hard-boiled egg for breakfast while traveling was at a hotel in Barcelona. They had a very nice, rich peanut butter. I stuffed myself - old hostel habits die hard! You gotta go to town on freebies! They actually had a sign posted - they'll make and pack you a lunch for 5 Euros. It was conspicuously placed to discourage people from making their own lunches and running off with it. Not that I would know anything about that ... I've got a sleepy bunch of people in my hostel room - they were all sleeping last ... read more

Just returned from a fabulous weekend in Amsterdam! I absolutely loved this city. It is just so dichotomous and interesting...never a dull moment. You turned one corner and saw gorgeous, tree-lined canals with people riding bicyles with their kids alongisde them on the cobblestoned streets, and you turned another corner and saw magic mushroom shops, sex shows and prostitutes in the Red Light District. It was so different. The airline Ryanair changed our initial flight to London from 5 pm to 10 am, so we had a very, very long layover in the London Stansted airport waiting for our next flight to Amsterdam...that airport is not big enough for an 8 hour layover. Anyway, we finally got to Amsterdam and then to our hostel downtown quite late, at about 11:30 p.m., and were surprised to ... read more
