The use of the name Montenegro began in the 15th century when the Crnojevic dynasty began to rule the Serbian principality of Zeta; over subsequent centuries Montenegro was able to maintain its independence from the Ottoman Empire. From the 16th to 19th centuries, Montenegro became a theocracy ruled by a series of bishop princes; in 1852, it was transformed into a secular principality. After World War I, Montenegro was absorbed by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, which became the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929; at the conclusion of World War II, it became a constituent republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. When the latter dissolved in 1992, Montenegro federated with Serbia, first as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and, after 2003, in a looser union of Serbia and Montenegro. In May 2006, Montenegro invoked its right under the Constitutional Charter of Serbia and Montenegro to hold a referendum on independence from the state union. The vote for severing ties with Serbia exceeded 55% - the threshold set by the EU - allowing Montenegro to formally declare its independence on 3 June 2006. To be updated

We are getting quite good at getting up when circumstances require it. We left the hotel and all too easily found the correct bus to Shkroder despite the numerous spellings of the name. The journey was forty minutes shorter than expected and we arrived in Shkoder prepared for a struggle. As we stepped off our minibus we were instantaneously confronted by a guy asking if we were heading to Ulcinj. He gave us a reasonable price and we followed him towards his minibus (or so we thought.) He stopped at an old fashioned Mercedes and we looked at each other, shrugged [View Full Entry]

Hi its Jenny again. Dont expect too much eloquence off me now. its been three months away and im beginning to forget how to type spell and text!! We arrived at Bar in montenegro at around 9am, around 2 hours late. Thats not bad for a former yugoslavia train. Suppose thats why they leave at least 3 hours between connections. We were hungry tired, and nerves were frayed as we made our way into town in search of a cash point and some food. We had maybe 5 hours of broken sleep on the overnight train from sofia. We had just [View Full Entry]

We left Croatia this morning to stay in Montenegro. On our way, we spent the rest of our Kuna on gas to get rid of it so we wouldn't need it anymore, just Euros. Funny enough (or not...), even though there is a 0% drunk driving tolerance in Croatia (meaning you can't register any alcohol in the system and drive), there is a bar in the gas station (actually all of them!) and Thad said there were two guys in the bar drinking with a cop! This was around noon too! Anyway, we spent some more time walking around Kotor, this [View Full Entry]

Decided to stay in the nice hotel in Dubrovnik one more night and do a day trip to Kotor Montengro before staying there. The drive into Montenegro was spectacularly beautiful. Unfortunately it was pouring rain when we got there, but we had another rainy hike and walked up to the fortress on the top of the hill. Then had this incredibly beautiful sunset drive back to Dubrovnik. [View Full Entry]

From War Torn to Tourist Town Yugoslavia, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo…these are all words that evoke, at least in the mind of the common American, the thought of war and ethnic cleansing. When mentioned in common speech, people tend to look at you like you are slightly crazy. To say, “Yeah, I’m going to Croatia for vacation next week,” people tend to think you’ve gone off your rocker. There is pretty simple reasoning behind this concern from friends and family: people know very little about this part of the world other than the conflict that occurred [View Full Entry]

If anyone has seen the James Bond movie Casino Royale, you might remember shots of an amazing fiord in Montenegro whilst JB was convalescing after a rather painfull experience with a less than complete chair, and a large blunt object smashing some of his tender parts. Well, not to be outdone, (except for the blunt object smashing part) we decided to check out this place and traveled south of Dubrovnik to Kotor on the bay of Kotor. Whilst driving around we have passed through numerous checkpoints as we travel in and out of Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina & Croatia. interestingly [View Full Entry]

We drive and then catch a ferry over to Herceg Novi, Montenegro, this town is really cool. Apparently was voted as one of the most beautiful bays in the world and also a real party town. Our accommodation is just ok, we settle in and wonder around town and do posting postcards and some shopping. We cool down, have showers, go down and have dinner and then we’re all ready to hit the town. The first nightclub we go to starts out ok, not too many people, there’s 40 of us so we need some room. The weirdest thing I found [View Full Entry]

Hi Everybody! We took our first plane flight from Belgrade to Tivar, Montenegro. Three times, we were at our gate ready to leave when the police came in and cleared the waiting room. We never understood what the problem was. Montenegro's scenery was different from any that we have previously seen in this part of the country. It has majestic mountains that come straight down to the Adriatic Sea. Judging from the nice yatchs, it must be a favorite haunt for the weathly. We drove to Budva, a seaside town for lunch and found it very crowded. The food had a [View Full Entry]
