After leaving the Biogradaska Gora national park, we went to Skadarsko Jezero, a huge lake close to the seaside. The way there was a bit difficult because we had to drive through a very long canyon that went almost all the way from the national park to Podgorica. Driving next to these big rocks seemed quite dangerous, most of all because it was raining a lot and once we even had to stop because it was raining so much we couldn't see the road anymore. It was impressive though and very beautiful. We arrived to Virpazar around 4 PM, 2 hours, 115 km and 20°C away from the national park. The temperature difference was immense! Virpazar is a lovely town, but we were hit by all the people trying to sell us a boat tour on ... read more

After leaving Durmitor, we went almost straight to the Biogradaska Gora national park. We only made one short stop in Mojkovac because the lady at the tourist info in Durmitor had told us this is where we have to pay for the camping in Biogradaska Gora. Since this wasn't true and there wasn't even a tourist info, we left this city and we went to the national park. On our way there, it was mostly sunny, but when arrived there, it stated raining and it kept raining all night. People at this park were very nice and friendly, what a surprise! ^_^ It was about 8 PM when we arrived there, but since it was in a forest and it was raining, it was already quite dark and as soon as we had set up our ... read more

When we had finally arrived to Montenegro, the second part of our trip began and it would be a huge adventure, filled with mesmerizing sights, cold, rain, frustration and a lot of happiness. On our way to our first stop, Durmitor national park, we had to cross a huge bridge and when we saw 50 people standing on the bridge, we realized that we were at Tara River with a breathtaking view from the bridge. We stopped on the parking of a hotel and walked across this very high bridge, bewitched by the beautiful sight of the mountains, forests and the river. We continued to Zabljak, where we went to the tourist info and to the supermarket and the first thing we noticed was how unfriendly all people in this made-up village are. It seemed like ... read more

Leaving Lake Skadar we drove to the beautiful Durmitor National Park via Niksic and Ostrog Monastery. The monastery is high up and built into the cliff face, originally built in the 17th century but after earthquakes not much of the original remains and it mostly dates from the 1920s. It’s a very popular place, lots of people visiting on coach tours. It’s Serbian Orthodox and houses the remains of Saint Basil so is a place of pilgrimage. Great views over the valley way down below. Watched a baptism service at the tiny church down the hill, the priest and family marched round and round the church, singing hymns. We stayed in the village of Zabljak on the edge of Durmitor NP, a small village with shops and lots of accommodation; I believe it’s a popular place ... read more

We left Kotor via the narrow twisty road that goes up above the town where there were great views back over the town and Bay of Kotor. As we continued to drive upwards the road became more and more narrow and such tight switchbacks it was just a thick line on the gps. The road leads up to the top of Mt Lovcen and on top of that is the mausoleum of Njegus, an incredible location for the communist looking mausoleum. The views were excellent, I read somewhere that you can see as far as Italy, not sure at all about that but is was a BIG view. Back down again and we stopped for lunch at the beach looking out to the island of Sveti Stefan, incredible blue waters and very busy. Spent the night ... read more

Our trip to the south stared in the middle of the night, because of the long journey. After a long wait on the Croatian border (despite the fact that there were only few buses before us) we came to the Bosnian border where, of course, we had to wait. And the same on the Montenegro border, only with the difference that they worked even more slowly there. First we visited Kotor, a famous medieval city with a little bit over than 1000 inhabitants. Kotor is located in the Bay of Kotor, which is the longest and deepest bay in the Adriatic Sea. It is also called the sautrenmost fjord in Europe. As soon as we stepped out of the bus the salesmen of sunglasses and similar things appeared around us. They were so persistent that they ... read more

Picked up our hire car that will be with us for the next month. Managed to navigate out of the narrow lanes of Dubrovinc and onto the route to Kotor in Montenegro. Hadn’t anticipated the hour long crawl through customs with all of the other traffic and in the midday heat. Apart from that the journey was a pretty one, particularly the drive around the Bay of Kotor. Stopped briefly to have a look around a couple of towns, first in Hercvig Novi which was wonderfully quiet after the crowds in Dubrovnic. Very peaceful with pretty and ancient stone buildings, lots of churches and great views from the sea front fort. Further into the bay is Perast which was much busier, very small and more lovely stone buildings, these clearly from the times when the Ventians ... read more

We have arrived in Corfu, Greece where the weather has not been the most pleasant. It has been cloudy and rainy all day making it nice weather to relax after our active day yesterday in Kotor, Montenegro. Kotor was unexpectedly the most picturesque stop on our cruise thus far. We were absolutely blown away by the scenery in the area. We got up early to watch the arrival into port as it was a narrow passageway with beautiful mountains surrounding us. As we were pulling in I said to Scott “maybe we can find a nice hike somewhere nearby today”, well ask and you shall receive! As we pulled in we could see people hiking a trail on the mountain side behind the city to a fortress. We took the tender into town and hiked up ... read more

I believe I always wanted to travel. My family had a very old atlas in the house and even as a child I loved to thumb through the pages and look at the colorful maps displayed inside. The book was huge and had heavy covers and thick paper that made a distinct sound when you turned it. Pastel pink, green and purple countries filled the pages. Thin black lines connected the cities and different size dots indicated the relative populations of each. Rivers and lakes were marked by a wonderful shade of light blue. Creating journeys along the roads or waterways to the most intriguing sounding places was an interesting pastime. I remember writing down the names of the countries or cities that sounded the most exotic. I knew nothing about the places other than their ... read more
