The use of the name Montenegro began in the 15th century when the Crnojevic dynasty began to rule the Serbian principality of Zeta; over subsequent centuries Montenegro was able to maintain its independence from the Ottoman Empire. From the 16th to 19th centuries, Montenegro became a theocracy ruled by a series of bishop princes; in 1852, it was transformed into a secular principality. After World War I, Montenegro was absorbed by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, which became the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929; at the conclusion of World War II, it became a constituent republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. When the latter dissolved in 1992, Montenegro federated with Serbia, first as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and, after 2003, in a looser union of Serbia and Montenegro. In May 2006, Montenegro invoked its right under the Constitutional Charter of Serbia and Montenegro to hold a referendum on independence from the state union. The vote for severing ties with Serbia exceeded 55% - the threshold set by the EU - allowing Montenegro to formally declare its independence on 3 June 2006. To be updated

Guess what! Yes its raining again. But this isn't going to dampen our spirits, so after breakfast we start our journey of driving round the bay. "Hope the roads are better the other side." The roads were flooded as we drove through Koto it hard to believe they started building this place around 800 BC but never got round to building drains We drove round to Perast, which is a very pretty coastal village. And has some very interesting architecture. The whole area has plenty of architecturaly interesting buildings Once there we headed for the museum for a little insght of [View Full Entry]

Saturated Souls II The weather today looks a little more promising so we decided to make another attempted to climb Kotor's wall after yesterday's attempt was rained off. We started this climb with a rucksack full of high hopes and even higher optimism, and ended up with a rucksack full of water. Very reminiscent of Hadrians wall. It is a good climb to the top. 1020 feet roughly. Zig zaging up the side of the mountain for what seems an eternity It is a good climb to the top but the views of Kotor and the bay with the incumbent mountains [View Full Entry]

Saturated Souls After a good night sleep we wake up to what is reminiscent of the weather in old blighty. Cloudy and overcast, but we have breakfast and put our lives in the hands of the gods and drive to Kotor. We had been in Kotor for no more than an hour when we were enticed into the Citadella roof top restaurant for pizza' due to the yummy smell coming from there. The Citadella Hotel has a great roof top restaurant that is well worth a visit if only for the views. But a cool beer and pizza makes the venture [View Full Entry]

Here we are at last. After a short stint on the plane we arrive in Croatia and drive the fifteen minutes to the border, to what use to be until a short while ago the planets newest country. This will be my fifth journal. Three of them along the Adriatic. Croatia. Slovenia and now Montenegro. I use write them for my own pleasure something to read back on in years to come. But hey I thought. I could put them on a travelblog site so others could read and hopefully get a little useful information from it. The weather here is [View Full Entry]

Well here we are again with just a few days before we start our journey. The weather outside is rainy. Hope that’s not a Prelude of things to come. It’s been a while since we have been away apart from Bruges and walking the ‘Hadrian’s wall. Last year, We have almost packed our bags. Our passports are at hand and we are all set for another exciting journey this time to Montenegro. Tess has done really well in planning all this as they don't seem to be that geared up on the tourist trade at the moment. But that should make [View Full Entry]

Leonardo Di Caprio is lost on the backpacker trail in Bangkok when he hears word of a magical Beach located off the Southern coast of Thailand. Like most backpackers without a plan would, he follows this secret advice and is justly rewarded for his search. And though he narrowly escapes death, gets chased by a shark, is exiled from the hippy commune and is driven mad, it makes for a good story. Such were our hopes when we heard word of beautiful fjord and medieval town located 3 hours bus journey away from Dubrovnik in the newly established Republic of [View Full Entry]

Hello all, Montenegro is a true gem. There is nothing I can say that would do it justice. I was and am completely enamored with this lovely little country and all the people we met while we were there. From coast to Fjords, to churches sin the middle of the ocean and incredible hiking to old abandoned castles and up any mountain you see! Oh, and did I mention, there was a perfect old town, and sunsets that are so incredible you can't even bring yourself to blink... For us, it started when John and I, against our better judgment and [View Full Entry]

We succeeded in getting out of bed rather early this morning and rewarded ourselves with the pastry we bought last night for breakfast. We didn't linger long because it was so damn cold. In a very responsible manner we got bus times in preparation for our onward journey. We think we will have to stay here tonight because the buses run early mornings. As we were leaving the station we bumped into our host Marco and okayed the extra night with him. We knew from Marco that there was a way up to the panorama next to our room but from [View Full Entry]

We managed to drag ourselves out of bed this morning only with the promise of our included breakfast. Despite knowing full well that hotel breakfast are always disappointing we still had high hopes. We got a cup of tea and an omlette that was swimming in grease. I couldn't stomach mine so early in the morning so Rob had mine as well. We sat and waited for the plate of cheese/meat to come that we had seen other people eating but it never did. We eventually figured out that it was either or but not both. Utterly disappointed we left to [View Full Entry]

We are getting quite good at getting up when circumstances require it. We left the hotel and all too easily found the correct bus to Shkroder despite the numerous spellings of the name. The journey was forty minutes shorter than expected and we arrived in Shkoder prepared for a struggle. As we stepped off our minibus we were instantaneously confronted by a guy asking if we were heading to Ulcinj. He gave us a reasonable price and we followed him towards his minibus (or so we thought.) He stopped at an old fashioned Mercedes and we looked at each other, shrugged [View Full Entry]
