The use of the name Montenegro began in the 15th century when the Crnojevic dynasty began to rule the Serbian principality of Zeta; over subsequent centuries Montenegro was able to maintain its independence from the Ottoman Empire. From the 16th to 19th centuries, Montenegro became a theocracy ruled by a series of bishop princes; in 1852, it was transformed into a secular principality. After World War I, Montenegro was absorbed by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, which became the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929; at the conclusion of World War II, it became a constituent republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. When the latter dissolved in 1992, Montenegro federated with Serbia, first as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and, after 2003, in a looser union of Serbia and Montenegro. In May 2006, Montenegro invoked its right under the Constitutional Charter of Serbia and Montenegro to hold a referendum on independence from the state union. The vote for severing ties with Serbia exceeded 55% - the threshold set by the EU - allowing Montenegro to formally declare its independence on 3 June 2006. To be updated

Before sending away my passport to the UK Home Office for six weeks, I decided to take one last holiday for some fun in the hot sun along the Adriatic coast. I only organised the whole trip about two weeks before leaving and so my first holiday since Krakow came a lot sooner than expected. It also gave me the chance to visit the second newest country in the world - Montenegro. Having gained independence from Serbia in June 2006, Montenegro only relinquished it's title as the world's newest country in February 2008 to it's Balkan neighbours Kosovo, who also gained [View Full Entry]

I've never had hot chocolate quite like this. I stared down into my cup, not exactly sure whether to be amused or bemused. Both seemed strangely appropriate. Isn't hot chocolate supposed to be drunk? Not...eaten? I stirred up a spoonful of the fragrant concoction, noting how it refused to spill over the sides of my spoon...like proper liquids were supposed to do. Or so I thought. We took our breakfast at the Podgorica central bus station -- adjacent to the train station where we were dropped off -- where I was able to sample a traditional burek with sir and meso [View Full Entry]

It wasn't until about 2 weeks in that I realized that something was missing: American fast food chains. I kid you not -- this is actually quite unusual, and consequently slightly disturbing. Even in Kuwait, I clapped eyes on a slew of American-based food joints: Applebee's, Chili's, TGI Friday's, and lots and lots of fried chicken. But here, none of that. Kaput. Zilch. Nada. Pick your language. Since the golden arches managed to extend its tentacles to as far as the Middle and the Far Easts, I naturally came to expect to see the same, here in Montenegro. Well, other than [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone. I would like to take this moment to dedicate this blog entry to Joyce, because it's her birthday in 5 days (the big 2-3! :)), and also because she would like to see my room. So here it is -- my room. Actually, it's a room I share with all the hostelers and couchsurfers, though we haven't had any of the latter as of yet. We've only had 3 hostelers so far -- 2 from Spain (I'm sorry, one from Spain and another from Catalonia, lol) and 1 from the States. Let's see...what's it like, here in Podgorica? Let's [View Full Entry]

SNOW

At the crack of dawn (8 AM in lazy-ass-student speak), Steve pokes his head into my room and announces that we're going to Budva today. Budva. My head still busy extricating itself from the realm of sleep, I could've sworn he told me that we're going to see the all mighty Buddha today. I don't care how many millions of Asians worship him -- I need my eight hours at all costs. Kaput. I squinted at him, hoping my serious case of bedhead would be sufficient enough to scare him away. It didn't. Man, what I wouldn't give for a few [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Montenegro! Well its been a couple of days. I'll try to pick up where i left off.... we enjoyed one last night in serbia. stayed up pretty late chatting with the guys who run the hostel, talking about random stuff. One guy was telling us all about the NATO bombings in Belgrade in 1999. He was living in the city, and they had built all kinds of shelters underground in case bombing started. And so it did. apparantly a lot of the bridges in the country were destroyed and they figured those in belgrade were next. i think most [View Full Entry]

Chapter 3- Montenegro “Far too much free beer” I was woken up again at about 3am. Another Serb guard, this one looked a lot like a James Bond henchman. He requested all our passports, and being the only non-Serb/Montenegrin passenger in the compartment I was of course the one who got interrogated. “You speak Serbian?” he asked. “No” (for some reason my school didn’t do a GCSE in Serbian. Not that that would have made much difference- I took a GCSE in German and I don’t speak a word of that) “Only English?&r [View Full Entry]

Country number #20 of the trip and back in the EU.... sort of! Well they use the euro. Montenegro is the world's newest country after a referendum passed in 2006 to separate them from the union of Serbia & Montenegro. We took a bus from Dubrovnik to the town of Kotor, built on the largest inland fjord in Europe. The ride was beautiful as we wound our way down the coast from Croatia. There was an interesting whirlpool-like thing in the Bay of Kotor that looked like an underwater spring. The old town of Kotor was yet another pedestrian-only, walled Roman [View Full Entry]

Took only about 45 minutes to get from Budva to Kotor. The arrival in town was quite dramatic for me, through mountain pass and out of it you immediately see the fjord! it was very cloudy and windy and when i got off at the bus station no one offered me rooms so i was forced to go to the old town about 1 km away, there was a green market going just outside of the fort, went in and looked around until i found Meridian Travel Agency according to LP is very helpful in finding accomodations.
