We spent the night 10 miles from the Russian border so many people speak both Latvian and Russian. We had our first concert in a village of about 2000 people in their community center. I don’t know why but it wasn’t at all like what I expected. It felt like something was missing. Even though there were only 30 people in the audient I don’t think that was the reason. I think for me personally it was my worst performance ever. Thankfully this is not about me but God. I definitely want to do better from now on but I am not devastated by my failure to perform as I normally would’ve been (God is changing me). I guess it is because I know this dancing is for Him to use as a tool and not ... read more

After a wonderfullly restful and -- perhaps more importantly -- warm, rest, I woke up ready to take on day two of my trip to this fascinating country. (That is such a cheesy way to start a blog update, but, I mean, how *do* you start a blog update? I struggle with that almost every time I start one of these! Weird eh?) Anywho. My first stop today was Rigas Central Market. You would think that the central market would be in the center, but, as with many European towns, the name has survived passed its accuracy (like in Prague where the "new" market is like 500 years old!) It is actually across the railroad tracks, so to speak (and literally as well) a bit to the south of the city center. (Being this far north ... read more

I am currently sitting in a nice warm, cozy computer lab at the most amazing hostel that I have visited in one of the most amazing cities that I have visited: Riga, the Capital of Latvia. It is really far north - definitely the farthest north I have ever been. Today the sun barely managed to get more than 20 degrees above the horizon. Even though it really is only at the end of a bay near the end of the Baltic Sea, it really feels like being at the end of the world. I arrived here late last night around 11pm local time. (Riga is in the same time zone as Germany, but is so far north that they do not use Daylight Savings time so it is an hour later here.) I was a ... read more

I am in Europe!! I arrived by bus from St. Petersburg and have been enjoying Riga, literally, ever since I stepped off the bus. The bus station here is the nicest I have ever been in. It is complete with an international ATM, cafe, helpful information desk, friendly bus ticket counter and an internet cafe. What a lovely surprise! Riga is a beautiful little city. I am staying at a new hostel in Old Town. It's an old five story town-house with a bar on the bottom floor and FREE interent! Yes, I am finally living the high life. The prices are reasonable here and Riga is metropolitan without being overbearing. I went to the cinema yesterday and ice skating and out to dinner with the hostel tonight. I have a bus ticket arranged to leave ... read more

Hi everyone.. so we said goodbye to the folks and made our bus for Riga by about 30seconds as we slept in 'again', but we made it and 5 hours later arrived in Friendly Fun Franks Backpackers right in the Old town of Riga. We were greeted with a free beer and a loads of aussies watching the cricket in the common room. Had a quick walk around the old town and back to the backpackers for some more cheap beer and headed out with everyone to a bar 26 floors up in a hotel and then to a nightclub. We had an awesome night out and arrived back some time in the very early hours of the morning. Day 2 .. we did manage to make it out of bed before evening and made it ... read more

The first day that i was here i went to a really cool club and then the next day ended up hanging out at the beach, really relaxing. as far a sights go, not much to see, except the women, i have never seen girls so hot!!! walking down the street you see these girls that are absolutely beautiful. maybe thats why i like it so much!!!! sorry i haven't been able to call, i haven't been able to find a place to buy a phone card and for some reason my phone doesn't work. hopefully in lithuania it will. There was a controversial experiment performed in the 70's where one person had to ask questions of a subject and give them electric shocks of increasing voltage (enough to kill) if they got them wrong. The point is that it was a trick: the person getting the shocks was faking it. The real subject of the study was the person giving the supposed potentially fatal punishment, to see if they would conform. This came to mind in Auschwitz, one hour from Kracow. The tour guide was excellent, but he really needed a change of job. He was really troubled with how people could do such evil deeds such as those done by the Nazi extermination camps and was worried about if he would do the same if he was wearing a German uniform at that time. ... read more

I am an Australian now living in Latvia as it is a lovely country and I have Latvian heritage. I am living the dilemma that I love the foreign cultural stimulation but at the same time it is difficult to connect with people on the same wave length. There is a lot I would like to communicate but where do I start? So this will do for now. ... read more
