Left Riga in the 15 feb. With April. Objective Get to the Amber Coast : Hitchhike to Liepaja. Walked back the great stone bridge. Wlaked out of town. Gas station. First ride - Julia - got us to Jurmala and then near the A9 road. from there a women drove us to a bistro in the A-9 road. Next ride, 40 Km, a Electrics truck. Finally a big truck drove us to Liepaja. Beautiful pale sun, behind the clouds. Trees of brown, red and dark green. fragile and naked with no leaves, the pines so strong and dark, covered with snow, white everywhere covering the ground and the houses roofs with a majestic carpet of peace and silence. shhhhh... the monotonous engine melody.the road down there, passing passimg passing,...beauty and peace. 07.02.07-10.02.07 Riga is the capital of Latvia and it is a charming city. Our hostel (The Argonaut) was in the centre of “Old Town” which is where most of old architecture and tourist sights are located. Old Town is full of medieval buildings mixed with very modern cafes, shops and bars. When you walk through the streets of Old Town, you feel as though you’ve stepped into a different era…until you see a big sign advertising cheap beer! We arrived around 11 pm on Wednesday night (the 7th) and decided to grab a bite to eat as we had spent most of the afternoon and evening on trains, buses and a plane. A dumpling shop was still open and this was our first experience with how some places charge for food in Riga - the food ... read more

Breakfast! Even though it had only been four days since we left home the fact that our hostel included free brekfast was fantastic! Egg, toast, jam, cheese, yoghurt and tea! Who could ask for more? Our hostel here in Riga is really lovely - or it was until the Irish turned up! About 40 18 year olds who stayed in drinking til midnight every evening then stumbled back in at various intervals throughout the night - grrr... Enough of the moaning old lady bit - Riga itself is really pretty, especially the Dome Cathedral where we went to a Sunday Service in Latvian, the National Opera House, where we went to see The Nutcracker Ballet, and the Freedom Monument which commemerates Latvia's independence since 1991. The market was a really nice experience too - lots of ... read more

In December I went to Riga with Triin to see Iggy Pop & The Stooges concert. At first we didn't believe that he is actually coming to Riga , because it's so close to Tallinn . Like Iggy Pop! We went there by bus. It was too dark and cold to hitch-hike. Unfortunately. Monday We got to Riga at 10 pm. We had accomodation through CS (www.couchsurfing.com). Our hosts, Maija and Richards came to pick us up at the bus station. They had a really cool kind of a underground appartment on Tallinas iela. We felt like at home. The appartment was quite big. And they had two the most adorable cats in the world. And I usually don't like cats that much. Lucky and Kitty. We talked to Maija and Richards for a while and ... read more

First day in Riga got off to a rough start. We got off the train and onto the platform to discover that it was not only MUCH colder than it had been in Minsk (didn’t think that was possible), but that we were in fact in the middle of a blizzard. Foolishly, I tried to quicken my step in an effort to escape the sheets of falling snow, which resulted in me slipping on the top step of the downward-leading stairs and taking a “quick” ride down about a handful of them. Ouch!! And Ohhh…how embarrassing!! I collected myself and totally played it off like nothing had happened…my ankle was throbbing quite painfully, though. That pain was immediately overshadowed by the numbing-cold from the increasingly falling snow. I had my snow cap pulled down and my ... read more

This ancient pearl of wisdom from Seneca echoes down through the ages, as I continue my travels through the beautiful Baltics, and get the chance to delve into the recent history of Latvia. After arriving in the capital Riga one feels like this is the centre of the world, with the beautiful UNESCO world heritage listed old town attracts tourists from western Europe and the United Kingdom. Riga is a short hop from it's Eastern European neighbours to the south, fascinates it's scandanavian neighbours to the north, and of course one cannot afford to ignore the 800 pound bear in the neighbourhood to the east ... er, that would be Russia! My journal continues from Siauliai, dear reader, from where I boarded a local bus for an easy four hour commute across the border and on ... read more

I'm cheating a bit here, because really, I was on the ground in Latvia all of 50 minutes whilst I swapped planes, but it will be a cool one to have on my travelblog map! Ahh, that's about all, I didn't take any photos, I figured you've all seen airports before. But first impressions were good, it was clean, tidy and efficient, and the staff very helpful when I had a query. Probably wont go back though.... read more

8/18 I was sitting in what could have been the millionth “Double Coffee” I’ve been to since I came to Riga enjoying a nice cup of vanilla green tea and reading my Bible and I noticed an American flag by the bar. When I saw it, it hit me that I am going home in a few days and I realized a part of me is a little apprehensive, maybe even a tad bit scared. I haven’t been ‘home’ in 8 months and haven’t live there for a year. It is comforting to already know the plans God has for me once I return but I know it won’t be easy to see it all play out. I also know it’s going to be harder to seek God with as much fervor as this past year ... read more

Alone In Riga 5:54 am and I am onboard a train to Oslo airport. It’s strange to think this may be the last time I will ever be in Norway (unless of course my Norwegian friends give me an excuse to come back!). It’s crazy that one year has already gone by. So much has happened this year. I feel like I’ve grown by leaps and bounds and pray that God continues to refine me and teach me even more when I go home. Kaspars K and his friend picked me up from the airport, dropped me off at the hotel and gave me a quick orientation of the area. It is a very nice, clean, new, peaceful hotel with natural colors (it is very inviting even with a desk, which is always good for me). ... read more
