Geo: 45.4096, 11.87662nd February 2016 PADOVA Padua is such a beautiful city with so much history. My son is living here so I have come for a visit. His apartment is tiny but family is family. There is always room for family. The cobble stone streets just scream out History with every step. I have this strange connection with this city. One of the shops a that sold stationary is called Prosdocimi. Almost my surname. Then in the church there was a statue of St. Prosdocimo. One night as we where driving through the old streets of Padua, I spotted a street sigh. "Ah," I screamed. Everyone in the car jumped out of their seats and got a fright. "What's wrong? What's happening?" They all asked. "The street is called San Prosdocimo!" "Is that all?" They all sighed. ... read more

The City of Frescoes (Padova) It’s 3:30 am and I rollover for the 100th time. This bed and pillow is made of concrete. I know Kirsten is sleeping lite so I try to lie still as I can and not wake her up. I don’t want to have the hard bed discussion until breakfast. Finally its 7:30 am, I roll over and Kirsten is still asleep. Holy cow I can’t believe it. I lay there for another 15 minutes and she starts to wake up. Good morning, did you sleep well I ask. I get the look and jump from the bed and run for the bathroom. I take my shower and run out the door saying I’ll see you at breakfast honey….. Breakfast is the normal good with lots of Germans just like last time ... read more

PADUA Just a stopover we thought. A place west of Venice – just looking for a camp for a night. Sounds like a back water. Let’s get in – rest – re water and get going. Finding a camp was not so hard. Got one right in what seems like the middle of town. Although it’s a spread out town - how would you know with these masters of chaos, random and pandemonium where the city boundaries are, let alone the city centre. So we park up and notice a lot of churches and historic looking stuff. Across from where we park for the night is a big grassed piazza with a moat around it. It’s about 150m in diameter and roughly circular. Around the perimeter are statues of every mythological hero known to man – ... read more

We spend the morning at the market bumbling our way through purchases of fruit that actually smelled like fruit, gnocchi and fresh pasta, cheese, prepared salads. The prosciutto and a chicken stuffed with forcemeat of chicken and asparagus was lovingly sliced as thin as paper and gently wrapped. We had no trouble getting to the Avis office to pick up the car and find a “be back soon” sign in the window. We reminded ourselves that this is Italy, and prepared to wait. Fortunately, we only had to wait a few minutes and we were on our way in a Lancia that Jack hated. We headed for Citradella a walled city north of Padova with dreams of a picnic lunch and a stroll along the top of the walls. When we reached Citradella, we couldn’t figure ... read more

The trip over was expectedly long. I wish I had been able to sleep more than a few hours, but there were two movies I’d been wanting to see for quite some time so I watched “Still Alice” before my nap and “ Selma“ after my nap. Because of my Mom, “Still Alice” was far more memorable and Julianne Moore’s portrayal of a woman with Alzheimer’s was frighteningly realistic. We arrived in Milan primed to be in Italy where life is good, inefficient, but good. The lines for passport control were incredibly long. The only place we’ve been in longer lines in in the Bahamas where laid back is the name of the game. I had made train reservations from Milan’s central train station for about 3 hours after we landed since I knew it was nearly ... read more

I booked the airline tickets last August and began planning in December. This may sound a little OCD, but it's my way of enjoying at trip before I get on a plane. I can't say I'm looking forward to the overnight flight after a recent red-eye from Seattle to Boston, but I'm excited that in about 18 hours I'll be in Italy.... read more

We arrived to Padua under cloudy skies and cool temperatures. We were able to find our way to Casa Battisti without any problem after about a 20 minute walk. As we were early arriving, we weren't sure we could get in but thankfully the cleaning lady buzzed us up and we got our room right away. Our place is very nice and there is a communal kitchen where we plan to cook dinner on both nights. We met with Suzy, the owner, and she is a wonderfully, warm lady from Syria. She was very bubbly and helpful, especially when we asked her to help us find the bus station we would be leaving from on April 6 that, according to the address and Google Earth, was outside of Padua in an industrial park! We then headed ... read more

There are two things that strike terror into my heart. The first reading the words non tocare in Italy. Being a bull in a china shop means I have to be extra careful to not touch and certainly not knock anything over. Being clumsy I have to watch every bit of my body otherwise something gets knocked off a shelf . The second seeing the picture of a camera with a cross through it . No pictures allowed. We knew that today would be one of those days. Not a non tocare day but a no photographs one. We were heading on the bus for Padova for the day and our date with destiny. A pre-booked ticket for the Scrovegni Chapel. But I have gone ahead of myself. The night wasn’t quite as quiet as the ... read more

Ok... it wasn't really a surprise trip. I just didn't know we were going until maybe an hour before we left. I think I didn't know because, well, I don't speak Italian that well... or they just didn't tell me. Nonetheless, I was glad to have the chance to go! We saw some pretty awesome things there... but we'll get to that in.. oh, a paragraph. Regular morning/early-afternoon routine: nothing much. TV, House, The Jungle, Super Smash Brothers with Claudia, shower, etc.... However, I did do one new thing today- It's my sister Brianna's birthday today, so I sent her a message to wish her a good one! (I hope she got it...). So Happy Birthday/Buon Compleanne Brino! Geo: 45.4096, 11.8766This was to balance the quiet day yesterday – we made an early start, leaving Rita and Elio until we meet up again in Ticino to catch the flight to London in July. And for us, off to Padua, which is about 80 minutes away. Luckily, the kids have developed a love of long car trips – so long as they listen to audio books. We've been entertained by Nim's Island, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory and Harry Potter #2, as well as numerous shorter books, this trip, and the kids just love them.Padua is quite spread out, for a historic town centre, so we drove straight to the Basilica of St Anthony, and got a park on the street just behind it. The outside of the building is nice – quite different with ... read more
