We had quite the day in Padua today! The group met at 8 am and walked to the Vaporetto. On the way to the train station, the ride down the grand canal was much more gentle than some of our previous rides on open water. We saw the Ca d’Oro, which we studied several times in class. It was strange to see such detail in person! The Vaporetto ride to the train station was very short. I think I could ride the whole route all day and never get bored. The train ride to Padua was short, and I was able to write some postcards. I had purchased more than I thought I needed, and it turned out to be an underestimate. So anyway, I wrote 8, and I should be sending those out Monday. Once ... read more

Padova Today, we took a trip by train to Padua (Padova, in Italian). While waiting in the train station early in the morning, we decided to get some breakfast. This consisted of croissants, coffee, tea, sandwiches and even hamburgers! Once we arrived in the city, we visited the 16th century synagogue in the city's historical ghetto. Jews have had a presence in the city since the 12th century. There we learned that there were no pictures of any kind because of the second commandment's prohibition against graven images. After that, we ventured around the rest of the ghetto where we looked at other synagogues and Jewish landmarks. Out last stop before lunch was to the ancient Jewish cemetery. The gravestones all faced to the east, which is the direction of Jerusalem. After lunch, we explored the ... read more

My clothes are wearing out. They have holes in them and the colors are fading away. They don't have the same shape as day one, some stains are unwashable and it gets worst as I wash them. My body's getting tougher after being through the worst winter in Europe since the invention of weather forecast. Scratches and bruises, sore muscles and dry skin makes me really feel this trip. Running after trains and buses in snow and ice storms, looking for places to crash when everything is closed in cold rainy nights and realising North Face can't do much against hails. When you finally find a roof, you never know when hot water will stop during showers if hot water there is. Dorms with their symphonies of snoring, coughing and farting are like nights out with ... read more

So last week we got a new glimpse of Italy in the small, university town of Padova, which is only about a 30 minute train ride from Venice. The visit was a day trip with our class organized by our professors, so we weren’t sure how fun it would be. We headed out early, oblivious to the fact that we were going to have one of the best days in Italy so far! Needless to say, we absolutely loved Padova! For one, it was completely gorgeous- an urban, university setting weaved together with ancient ruins and beautiful gardens. We started the day with some beautiful cathedrals and churches with some great Titian frescos, then went and saw the Basicalla of St. Anthony, only one of my new favorite churches! Catholics pilgrimage to this site where St. ... read more

Days Five and Six Padova and Venice We had an uneventful trip to Padova by train, except for having to ride the Eurostar (which costs more than twice the price of regular trains). When we in, we checked at the tourist information in the station, since we had read that they could book rooms for you. this was a lucky move: the woman at the desk told us all the rooms in town were booked due to a big auto show (an the Venice marathon we found out later). When we said we were hoping to find a place near the station, she happily told us that a hotel right behind the station had just called and said they had a room freed up. This turned out to be a great stoke of luck: the hotel ... read more

I’ve figured it out: it’s a 9 to 1 ratio. About 90% of the time I enjoy working for a musically-talented, thoughtful and amusing family for 5 months as a side job for taking a break after college. Andrea and Cecilia are getting me back into playing the piano, which I’ve stupidly ignored for about 4 years, they are always recommending places to travel, and this Saturday night Cecilia and I are going to a performance at the Roman outdoor theatre in Verona. Can’t. Wait. Then there is the other 10% of the time when I want to pull out my hair and think get me out of here! That’s mainly when the kids whine, pout and cry if they don’t get what they want stat. They know they’re spoiled, and like two days ago, Gioia ... read more

Last weekend i spent a lovely couple of days in Padova (Padua) and Venice for the world famous carnival. Fortunately we departed from Bologna at a very cilvised midday on Saturday, and arrived in Padova with plenty of time to have a tour of the city, lavish dinner and to prepare ourselves for the carnival party that evening. To which over 1000 erasmus students from all over Italy where invited. At the mention of "parties" i feel it my duty to digress a moment and add that I had actually done an exam that Friday, and I do do some work as well as play, and the exam went really well and was completely and utterly different to my last horrible one (where after waiting seven hours the teacher spoke to her colleague while i was ... read more

a good sleep last night - the first night in new surroundings is never great, but last night was fine, and i have a feeling tonight i'll just pass out. very tired, another long, active day. so i nearly slept in this morning. how does one sleep in on vacation you might ask? well i had a reservation to see the Scrovegni Chapel here in Padua at 9am. i don't know what i was thinking last night when i set the alarm for 8 because you're supposed to be there a half hour early to pick up the tickets you have to reserve and pay for earlier. so after my shower i realize its almost 830, and the chapel is a 15 minute walk away. No breakfast stop, just a beeline there. Lucky for me its ... read more

early night last night - went back to the hotel, and got in the shower with my clothes on so i could wash them (it actually works pretty well, don't mock me, its cheaper than going to the laundromat! thats like 7 bucks a load here, and i only needed a few clean pairs of undies to get me through the next week hahah anyhow, thought the hotel was gonna be nice adn quiet since its a churchy-type place. however there is no carpet all tiles and marble so when someone breaths it echos through the whole place. not to mention the church bells across the street going off all the time. but earplugs are marvelous things so i slept pretty well after. i also have a tv in my room! what a bonus, so not ... read more

well not much to say today, but i like to update every day so everyone knows i'm still alive. got up in plenty of time this morning to catch my train at 931 (not 930, 931) from munich to verona, then switch to another to padova. the train was crowded and since i booked kinda last minute i got stuck in a middle seat in a 6 seater compartment. reasonably comfortable though, and the lady in the window seat next to me was passed out half the ride leaning the other way so it wasn't too bad. beautiful scenery though, snowy mountains for most of th eride, lots of tunnels. went through brenner pass in austria and there was quite a bit of snow. but then as soon as we got down the other side, the ... read more
