Cristina, Kelli, Monica and I took a nice little trip to Lake Garda, the largest lake in Northern Italy. It was a gorgeous scenic 2 hour car ride! Vineyards, mountains, and rivers surrounded us. We decided to park in the little town of Malcesine and enjoy the lake from there. The main event of the day was to rent a speed boat. Once we shelled out our money we hopped aboard and sped away! Lake Garda is absolutely gorgeous and it's size is imense! I just enjoyed the sun and wind while Captain Kelli sped around the lake trying to catch wakes from other boats and ferries. Unfortunately, there weren't very many out but we managed to chase a few down that we did see. After awhile we decided to give our little boat a rest ... read more

Ciao tutti! here we are then, our first entry. we have just trecked to the next lakeside town for this, in the boiling morning sun. Anyway, news so far. Bergamo was lovely. just spent a day and a half there, but weather was ace and the old town was lovely, and we climbed to the top of castello go get a great view of the snow-topped lomardy mountains, and just chilled out wandering round the town mainly. my italian did get us into a bit of trouble, as when i asked for two tickets to garda for the next day in the morning, he took me literally, and got us on the 7:24am train! kerry was not impressed that we would have to be up for 6am the next day, but it worked out really well ... read more

Buongiorna(hello) The previous blog sent before this one was to wish you all a Merry and a Jolly. This blog carries on where we left off last year and again attempts to get us up to date (should have been one of the New Year resolutions). Well anyway welcome to the land of Italy. We ended up spending over 6 weeks here in total, the longest in any country so far. We entered into Italy from Nice, France, and slowly ventured southwards into the boot, and onto Sicily. Then it was back north into Venice and lastly Lake Garda. As you probably know the Italians are a little mad, love their food and are very passionate people. They only do thinks at 2 paces - Extremely fast or extremely slow. This made for interesting driving especially ... read more

Our younger daughter hates long car rides. That's why we try not to drive more than four, five hours a day when en route. With such a strict schedule, we can't always avoid overnight stays at hotels. Our low budget home exchange vacations allow us to splash a bit, when choosing a hotel. Last night, we were reminded how comfortable a home exchange setting really is. Even though our hotel room was very large - imagine the scene of a young child - too excited to sleep while the other family members could barely keep their eyes open. Ou restricted traveling schedule has its positive sides, too. During school vacations, when everybody else hits the road early to avoid traffic jams, we leave in the late afternoon with roads all cleared. This morning, after the other ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Lake Garda October 2nd 2006

Well, what have I been up to? not a lot really. After moving on from Lubliana, I went to the caves mentioned in my last entry, well worth the effort. whilst in the area I visited the stud farm at Lipica, where they breed the horses use in the Spanish riding school in Vienna (see picture). Whilst on the topic of horses, as promised, I have an equine question - I visited a town in north east Italy, where by chance there was a national show jumping competition in progress (see photo). It was on Sunday 24/9/06 and was televised, but where was it? Going back a bit, I travelled from Lipica up to Lake Bled for a few days, whre the scenery was stunning, only ruined by the constant rain. Had some scary drives on ... read more

We are now in a place called Lake Garda, which is a little bit smaller than Lake Taupo. We are staying at a pretty nice hotel, which makes a nice change from the hostels we have been at. Sharing a room however means that it is only slightly more each than the crappy hostel we were in in Rome. Here we have a nice room, our own bathroom, nice beds and a pool! The weather has turned up to the party aswell which is great considering it rained our last 3 days in Florence. It was a bit sad to leave Florence, it is a very cool city, great vibe, great people and lots of fun. We had a couple of huge nights there and meet heaps of people. Yesterday Matt got it into his head ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Lake Garda August 18th 2006

Friday 18th August Sadly we left Cinque Terre which was one of the most enjoyable place we have visited. Headed initially along the autopista (stopping for a grotty cappaccino at a motorway cafe). The landscape suddenly changed from big mountains to gentler hills and then a flat plateau. We moved on to the smaller roads, stopping at a supermarket for provisions and a sandwich. We had intended staying at ????? on Lake Garda but when we got there we didn't like it so we drove round the lake till we found a site right by the lake in a quieter spot. Couldn't beleive our luck, one pitch left on the first campsite we tried and literally right on the edge of the lake. Beautiful views directly from our pitch over the lake and to the Alps ... read more
