Finally, I am back in England and my little adventure is over. I have been back since 21/04/07, but have only just got around to typing my final entry. Firstly, an apology to all my avid readers. Having read my blog entries since returning, I have noticed a considerable number of spelling mistakes. Sorry about this, I should have been more careful whilst typing, although keyboard layouts vary across different countries. Back to my travels, I went from Salamanca to Madrid and parked by the University for a few days. Madrid is one of the places I most wanted to visit and I was not disappointed. The Parque del Retiro and Palacio Real (royal palace) being the tourist highlights for me. Another highlight was a 3 course meal that cost just 7euros and included a ... read more

Well, its like this! I am now back in Spain, Salamanca to be precise, and have less than five weeks of my journey to go before I return to the UK. That means this is likely to be my penultimate entry. I am homeward bound. Portugal has been a magical place for me. Starting in Beja, a town near the middle of the country, surrounded by flat lands and cork plantations. I then moved south east to Monte Gordo, on the Algarve and worked my way west to Faro. Here I picked up an old friend (Ken) from the airport and we travelled to the small town of Luz, for a week of luxury in an appartment owned by a good friend of mine (thanks Tony, much appreciated). From there, we travelled around the rest of ... read more

Just a short entry to add some pictures and give the latest batch of questions, with a gardening theme this time. I have moved on from Spain and am now in a lovely town called Beja, in Portugal. However, before reaching here, I had a couple of days in Seville. Its a remarkable city and rates within my top 5 cities visited so far (not quite sure where exactly). Lots of grand buildings, a huge cathedral and river. Not to mention the bars!! Anyway, to the questions: 1, (see Granada Picture) The is a garden in the Alhambra called the Generalife. In the Koran, paradise is described as " shaded, leafy garden, refreshed by running water where the fortunate ones may take their rest under tall canopies". This describes the Generalife quite well. However, what is ... read more

I love Spain, I just wonder what it will be like when it is finished? In my last entry, I was just south of Valencia. Well, have done some travelling since then And met some interesting people, not to mention haveing some fantastic weather (that has now deserted me). Interesting stops include, Benedorm (full of old Brits strolling up and down the sea front. However, it is very clean, with beaches hoovered every night. I also found a bar that the local bikers use, where there was entertainment in the form of a Blues brothers tribute, who were very good), Alicante (well worth a visit for the hill top fortress of Castillo de Santa Barbara), Alhama de Murcia (where I stopped in a campsite in the mountains. Talking to locals, the guy who owns Orange cycles ... read more

To all my avid readers, a very happy new year & hope your xmas was as good as mine. Before going on to this entry, the answers to the Italian questions. The tractor thingy was indeed a Lamborgini (this is what the sports cars look like without a body), so well done Dom and Si. Best guess goes to Steve, with a Lancia left out in the rain (though it was obviously in too good a condition for this to be correct). The drain was the drain of truth, which will, as legend has it, swallow your hand if you tell lies. Well done Dom again and Sharon (nice to hear from you and Dot) Anyway, down to business. I have done some mile since my last entry. Travelling north through Italy, I spen a few ... read more

November 30th 2006

Just a short entry, to supplement the previous entry. Firstly, the answers to some questions asked in previous entrys. The Italian national horse jumping was held in a town called Arzignano. No right answers (infact, no answers at all). Secondly, the international sport event held in Rimini was indeed the 2006 European Duathalon Championship. well don Bill and Dom, Nice try Ed. Shame none of the sports guys sent an answer. Anyway, 2 more questions (see pictures). The first, is one of me holding my hand in a famous drain cover in Rome, but what is the reason for doing this (according to legend). The second is for you engineers. Can you name the agricultural vehicle in the picture?... read more

Back on line again! I have been in Italy for 2 months now. I find it a most frustrating country! I love and hate it with equal passion, for very different reasons. There are some beautiful places, there is lots of free camping in aires, the weather has been kind (but getting cold now) and the people are generally friendly. I dont realy know what makes me want to leave the country, but I am now getting desperate to leave (unless I can find some work here). My journey has taken me south to Manfradonia (on the lump that sticks out just abouve the heel of Italy. The weather was good and I managed to get some snorkeling in (though there was not much to see). From there, I moved West, across country (stopping in hill ... read more

Before I start this entry, the answer to the question from "name the cow". It was a Hungarian Grey (so the information plaque said, and who am I to argue). I have been gradually working my way down the Adriatic coast of Italy, taking in such places as Ravenna (once the capital of the Roman empire), Rimini (the "brash" seaside resort, that I found quite charming, but it was out of season) and Ancona (I didnt find anything interesting there). I planned (once again) to to go windsurfing, had the lesson booked (£30), but was once again beaten by the weather (wind too strong this time). Never mind, got some pictures of guys kite surfing, see photo. The weather has been kind, raining only 3 times since hitting the coast and temperatures usually in the upper ... read more

Well, what have I been up to? not a lot really. After moving on from Lubliana, I went to the caves mentioned in my last entry, well worth the effort. whilst in the area I visited the stud farm at Lipica, where they breed the horses use in the Spanish riding school in Vienna (see picture). Whilst on the topic of horses, as promised, I have an equine question - I visited a town in north east Italy, where by chance there was a national show jumping competition in progress (see photo). It was on Sunday 24/9/06 and was televised, but where was it? Going back a bit, I travelled from Lipica up to Lake Bled for a few days, whre the scenery was stunning, only ruined by the constant rain. Had some scary drives on ... read more

Since my last entry, I have been to lake Balaton, in Hungary, and Ptuj, Nazerje and Ljubljana in Slovenia. The sun has been kind and I have seen some interesting sights and done loads of biking (some great downhills on the ski slopes of mt Golte, in Slovenia). I have even been paragliding, which I enjoyed, but did not find as exciting as I expected. Balaton lake is huge. From where I camped, you could see water on the horizon in one direction. Whilst there I did a fair bit of biking, even some off-road. Saw some interesting cattle there, Nat, I challenge you to name the cow in the picture (not Daisy etc, but the breed). Stopped in the second main town of Keszthely at Balaton, which was ok. Moved on to Slovenia after a ... read more
