Leaving the Rifugio Nuvolau on my fifth day on the Alta Via 1, there was a choice of onward route - either backtracking downhill to the Rifugio Averau and contouring around the base of the mountain, or dropping straight down the southern face of the mountain on a Via Ferrata route. With a full pack on my back the former seemed to be the only smart choice. With the cable cars having not yet started running for the day, the walk down was both scenic and peaceful... until I reached the road crossing at Passo Giau to be confronted by hordes of day-trippers starting out on their own hikes. But the scrum was soon left behind as I continued on the south side of the road (which seemed to attract only a fraction of the people ... read more

It seems like no matter what we do, we get home at 5:30 every day. Today I thought that I could skip taking a nap when we got home...but fell into a deep sleep, and I'm now fixing dinner of pasta, butter, and cheese at 7:45....I'll be so glad when jet lag is over.... Since the rain was not supposed to start until nearly noon today, we went for a long walk around the local villages: Villa, Torch, Garna and Shiucaz. We walked past fields of wildflowers, past churches, homes, and farms, and down to a river, where the road was closed due a landslide. There was a wedding in Garna, and the church bells rung loudly across the mountainside. On the way back, two paragliders landed at the local club right next to us! We ... read more

My final resting place today is in Belluno, which lies at the start of the impressive Dolomite mountain range. We had been looking forward to mountain air and views. Unfortunately, luck was not with me, and I took a tumble on the ferry trip to the airport having missed a step, which has left me hobbling around with a sprained foot. I'm in no condition to walk up and down steep trails. What that means, is hopefully my backlog of blog entries will finally be published. I initially fought my fate, dreaming up plans to go up ski lifts or to buy crutches, but everything I might do is short of a proper walk, and I'm better off promising myself to return to this rugged country, and to make a date with the computer.... read more

Auguri tutti, This week here we celebrated 'festa della donna' (celebration of woman). According to my sources at Wikipedia: "The International Women's Day (commonly referred to improperly Women's Day) marks the 8th of March every year to commemorate the achievements and social, political and economic conditions of women, both discrimination and violence which they are yet declared in many parts of the world. This celebration was held for the first time in the United States in 1909, in some European countries in 1911 and in Italy in 1922." Anyway over here it's a big deal, so to celebrate I went to the birreria with my friend and her boyfriend. I was supposed to be having a kind of blind date with a friend of my friends, but I got stood up because his cow was giving ... read more

Welcome back to Sophia's school of Italian cookery! This week I shall be sharing my new found wisdom in the art of making a traditional mushroom risotto. This is one of my all time favourite dishes, so I was excited to be shown how to make it by my Italian adopt-a-nan. It's nice and easy to make and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.... Ingredients: 20g (more or less) of dried mushrooms A small glass of white wine 1/2 a small glass of risotto rice per person Meat stock cubes/powder 1 white onion A good sized chunk of butter Salt and pepper for seasoning Instructions: Atleast an hour before you want to start cooking, soak the mushrooms in a bowl of hot water When the mushrooms are ready prepare the meat stock ... read more

Hello loyal fans, I'm back from my travels to Florence & Pisa. We were lucky with the weather as it was nice sunny, unlike here where it is still snowing (seriously how much snow can one country take?). The day before I left for Florence was Valentine's day, so I enjoyed a nice romantic lunch at the local Birrerria with Kasia. Her boyfriend was in France for work, so we were the Lonely Hearts Club. The next morning at some stupid time I took the train from Feltre to Florence. In only 3 hours and 20 minutes I had arrived. My next challenge was to find the apartment we'd rented and check-in. I got so lost and the most annonying thing was it turned out only to be a 5 minute walk from the station (typical)! ... read more

Greetings from cabin fever central, I am home alone (as the family are in the Maldives this week), going stir crazy because I'm actually snowed in. I can't even manage the ten minute walk to the front gate, as the snow is currently upto my knees!! We were supposed to be going to Venice Carnival today, but had to cancel that aswell. So safe to say this week I am officially fed-up with this country and it's erratic weather! The family left in search of sun (leaving me here in the Artic) on Saturday morning. Had a good day/night out after they left. Kasia and I went into the centre to do some shopping and then back to mine for supper. I made gnocchi con ragu (potato dumplings in a bolognese sauce), which luckily didn't kill ... read more

Hello all, This week you're in for a treat with not 1, but 2 (yes 2) posts! This week has been, let's just say, very eventful! Now as you'll remember from last week's post (which of course you've all been reading), La Nonna died. So this week was kicked off with the funeral. I've never seen a church so full in my life, it was literally packed, people had to stand because they had run out of chairs! It was particularly amusing (if it's acceptable to say that about a funeral), because everyone was wearing coats from the family's factory, so when we did the walk behind the coffin from the church to the graveyard it looked like a massive fashion show. On Wednesday night it was the grandpa's Birthday, so we had 18 people over ... read more

Hello all, I've had a rather sad last few days. The Italian mum's mother died so been trying to help out, whilst at the same time staying out the way so the family can grieve (not as easy as it sounds). The funeral is tomorrow and I feel particularly sad for the kids who only lost their dad 18 months ago and have now lost their grandma as well. In other happy news my knitted patchwork blanket is coming along nicely. I finally finished knitting all 56 squares, now I just have to sew them all together! The only problem is though that I can't sew!! Luckily the little old lady who comes in the week to clean the house, (or as I like to call her 'adopt-a-gran'), has been teaching me. The first attempt was ... read more
