Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Museon ensimmäiset kaksi kerrosta kertoivat Genovan historiaa 1500-luvulle. Keisari Maksimiliankin kävi Genovassa, joten Tupu yritti museon annista saada kuvaa, miltä Genova näytti silloin. Lare oli otettu kaleerien luonnollista koko [View Full Entry]

Sunday...a true ‘day of rest’ over here. Almost all shops are shut and streets are deserted so it was an ideal day to travel across Italy to Florence. We decided the other day to skip Rome during this trip and fly there from England instead as we’re a bit short of time. We drove from Venice through Bologna - this looked like a really nice city with great architecture. We had a drive around the city and stopped at a park for lunch. We took a few photos and moved on down to Florence. When we got to Florence we did [View Full Entry]

I love the beach!
I love the beach!
July 17th trip.
Viareggio was the closest beach to florence, only an hour by train, so I went to this beach three times! (Once in June, once in July, and once in August.. the day before I was to return to the states.) It's a pretty busy beach so if you arrive after lunch time, and it's a busy day, you might have to walk for a while down the beach to find an available bano. Bano doesn't always mean bathrooms.. in this case.. it's an area you rent umbrellas from... which you have to do if you want to be on this beach! [View Full Entry]
