i just finished a short field trip in ireland - trained up to galway for a day, then down to killarney for two days where i did some hiking in the national park and food shopping in tesco. i'd advise against training anywhere in ireland - not quite as efficient as other EU countries. to get from galway to killarney, which is approximately 1.5 hours driving, took an amazing 8 hours on the train and 4 train changes. no matter where you are and want to go, dublin is the hub, but the travel was free as i still had my eurail pass. killarney was beautiful - a large national park at the city limits, i hiked to ross castle and a copper mine that was used in 2000 BC. the forest was very tropical and ... read more

So after a quick lunch, I headed towards Edinburgh Castle only to realize... I didn't feel like going to Edinburgh Castle. Fortunately, located behind it in the old army barracks was the Chester Beatty Library, which had the added attraction of being free. Plus, when I walked in, the guard told me the best thing I'd heard all weekend - that I wasn't allowed to take my backpack in and would be required to put it in a free secure locker. My liberated shoulder muscles wanted to cause my arms to fling themselves around him in gratitude... but I restrained myself somehow. So who was Chester Beatty? I started by watching the documentary that was playing on loop. Beatty's early days were modest, but he soon made a fortune in the mining industry. Though an American, ... read more

No, not hurling. Hurling! (And those are links, so click on them. In order!) How could I say I had been to Ireland without exploring Dublin? Especially since I flew in and out of there. I got up and packed up my things and headed out, but not before having a full Irish breakfast. It seemed to be very similar to the full English breakfast, except for the presence of black pudding (known in other languages as "blood pudding" - 'nuf said) and something else unidentifiable. I ate the egg, toast with jam, beans, and tomato and avoided the black pudding. (Been there, done that, don't feel the need to try it again.) I hesitantly took a bite of the other round, tan, breaded patty. Hmmm... not bad. So I asked my waiter: "What is this?" ... read more

Hello all from green and luscious Ireland Having a lovely time touring around Ireland, Dublin was great. Visited the Trinity College and saw the Book of Kells and the Guiness storehouse - tasted a drop or two at the top of the tower with views out to Dublin city. Also enjoyed the city tour. A vibrant city. Staying at the hostel was educational - luckily sleeping after walking all day meant that the train line didn't bother us! In Wexford today stayed at a lovely B&B and on to Waterford to see the crystal being cut and to ~Cork for the night. Cork has a great 'English'market with local produce. Talking about food we have been enjoying the local bacon, Irish stew and soda bread. Had cod and chips last night - lovely. Dad if you ... read more

Labor Day weekend found me in Ireland. A few weeks before, I was moseying around the Ryan Air website, just out of curiousity, and the next thing I knew, I had a ticket. The return trip cost 1 p. Convert that to American dollars, and that makes it a whopping two cents. I have no idea how these airlines stay in business! They get you on the taxes, but still. I had paid for it almost even before checking to see if I was free that weekend. (Like my grandmother who had laying hens and still bought eggs at the store because they were on sale. Hey, you can't fight genetics!) The ticket to get there was a slightly more expensive 12 pounds 99 pence. So either England really wanted me back, or Ireland really wanted ... read more

After leaving Cashel, I headed west. It was nice to be in a rental car again, because it meant I could veer wildly off the road when I saw a sign pointing to a pottery place. I had heard that Ireland was even worse than England for timely and communicative road signage, but I didn't find that to be true. With a map and some planning, I got everywhere I wanted to go - lazy ferry drivers aside. I did have some issues skirting Limerick, though. It was easier said than done, because the road signs pointed me in a direction that was the complete opposite of my end goal. Turns out they were right, though - even though I still don't know what path I took around the city. I just know that I had ... read more

Going to Ireland, at this point in my life, was one of the best and memorable experiences of my life. Many awesome things happened on my trip and I visited many incredible places within Ireland. I thought about posting my journal from my time in Ireland ( which by the way is a great way to keep record of your travels - unfortunately I had no idea of the online travel blog then), but instead I have decided to post some key places to visit. I may at a later date post some entries, but I really want to put focus on those students who are interested in studying abroad. I went through a program called Arcadia. It takes a little time planning to go abroad. You have to figure out how you will take care ... read more

Green, Gaelic & Guinness…Ireland Our first day in Ireland felt like a truly international day. After flying from Liverpool, England to Dublin, Ireland, we had to take a detour to the Chinese embassy. En route, we passed Irish pubs, Polish markets and Ghanaian restaurants. Once there, we presented our visa applications to the Chinese clerk - all in order so that we’d be able to traverse Russia, Mongolia and China later in our travels! Trivia: What is the second most spoken language in Ireland? Answer: Chinese! As expected, we found Ireland to be a very charming place. In fact, we’re not alone. It’s said that Ireland has more tourists per year than actual residents! We started our Irish adventure in Dublin and did a big counterclockwise loop passing through Northern Ireland, along the northern coast and ... read more

it's been a while since i've written a proper blog (and this one won't be too long either)...my apologies on that...i've been a bit busy trying to squeeze the most out of the eurail pass that marc and i got. we did a WHILRWIND tour of scandinavia - if we were't sleeping or on a boat or hiking we were on a train, there was no downtime at all. norway was spectacularly beautiful. took a fjord cruise down the longest and deepest fjord in the world. cliffs that went straight up into the sky and straight down to the water. train rides through mountain passes and valleys...ferry rides through tiny islands to even tinier villages. our plan to get to the UK was to take a ferry from stavanger norway to newcastle or up through the ... read more
