My original plan regarding travelling around the country was to purchase a bicycle and make my way around in that fashion. I'm not so sure that plan is going to work anymore, but it definitely isn't going to deter me from seeing the countryside! I may just do it mostly by bus and on foot instead, due to the fact that bikes are outlandishly expensive here, at least the ones I've seen so far. Also I'm not too sure how well I'd do in any sort of traffic. You wouldn't think that switching the lanes would be that hard to get used to, but there really are more changes than that to take into account and I don't want to put anyone in danger :) Anyway, I'm having a wonderful time but am quite ready for ... read more

My overseas trip this past Sept. & Oct. 2006 was to leave Atlanta, GA. USA for Dublin, Ireland. I left on Delta airlines had a change of planes in JFK in New York City to an Aer Lingus flight and after a short stop in Shannon, Ireland arrived in Dublin tired and weary after drinking too much Guiness at JFK waiting for my Aer Lingus flight. The plan was to arrive in Dublin at 7am, spend the day exploring the area around the downtown area and make new friends at the Temple Bar area in the evening. However since I had a hangover I slept most of the day in the hostel (Abrahams Hostel). In the evening however I did manage to get up, get ready and walk over to the Temple Bar. (I added two entries today, so dont miss the one from yesterday!) Thursday we went horseback riding in Killarney national park and walked around the town. The horseback riding was great, and I was surprised at how well mom did! She almsot fell off once because her horse tripped, but she stayed on well. The guide for the trail ride was a 20 year old girl from France, I was talking to her most of the time. She told me what pub to go to later that night, and one of her friends was in the band playing. Although it wasn't traditional Irish music (was rock) it was still really fun. The group of people I ended up hanging out with was very diverse. There were 5 French, 1 Finnish, 1 Swiss, 2 Irish, 2 English, ... read more

Haha yeah, so on the way from Galway to Killarney we decided to go see the Cliffs of Moher. Just about 10 minutes before we got there mom hit a "mobile bank" truck with our rental car. Keep in mind the truck was stationary, we hit it going about 2 miles per hour. No one was hurt but the truck acted as a can opener on our poor rental car's door. The guys were very nice about it but they had to call the "Guard" or police to take a report. Mom and I couldn't stop laughing because he was so serious about his job, but when he pulled out his pen to start writing it was a big red one with happy faces all over it. Anyway, after that we proceeded to the Cliffs of ... read more

Yay!! We just got our internet back, it wasn't working yesterday at all. So yesterday we took a drive up to Connemara, Clifden and Lettefrack, in what the Irish call the wild west. The roads are not nearly wide enough to be two ways, but they are, as I said before, it's pretty terrifying. That area is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. There are mountains everywhere, and they're just covered in rocks and grass, and little ponds and lakes. Mom almost ran over sheep a few times too. We ended up going into Lettefrack because thats where Kylmore Abby is (a beautiful "house" that is now a nunnery/girls school). It was absolutly breathtaking. Not only is the house georgous, but the grounds are amazing. After getting lost for about an hour ... read more

Today I actually got up the guts to go a little farther away from my apartment. I would say that I traipsed around the SW third of the city for about 3 hours. I had three goals in mind when I set out, which were accomplished in the first 15 minutes: find sugar (something I forgot to purchase yesterday), a headset for my computer (since my bloody bluetooth doesn't seem to want to work properly), and the post office. To minimize my tourist-y appearance, I wore my run-down shoes, neutral colors, my school bag over my shoulder, and carried my camera in my hand instead of around my neck on a strap. Not sure how well it worked, but since I hardly ever open my mouth, I should be able to blend in. Right? Anyhow, I ... read more

So we have arrived at the hotel Meyrick in Galway in one piece. The flight wasn't too bad... some crying babies here and there and my chair was broken though. It wouldn't lock so it just kinda went back when it felt like it. We had an engineer who overheard our convorsation try to fix it... unsuccessfully. We had to drive in our rental car about an hour from Shannon Airport to Galway. It was loads of fun watching mom figuring out how to drive on the left side. She keeps repeating the mantra "stay to the left, steering wheel to the center lines". Unfortunatly she overcompensates to the left sometimes and we end up nearly on the sidewalk. Anyway, I don't even know if anyone besides Dave is reading this, but I figured i'd update ... read more

It took us a while to realise that there are, in fact, no sign posts in the county of Donegal unless of course you are prepared to hack your way through 3 foot of hedge to get at them. Our third accidental detour of the day took us nearly into the Atlantic on one side with only 1 half a mile of lake to swim across to get us to Maura's wedding starting in approximately 15 minutes on the other side. Some frantic reversing, cursing and waving at fists at the gentleman in the petrol station who had sent us in the wrong direction (not to mention some swift under-carpet-brushing of the small fact that it was moi who had lef the map behind) got us to the right town with 5 minutes to spare but ... read more

So it's pretty windy and cold here, but when the sun comes out it's not bad at all. We walked around the city for a while, it's really cool. It almost feels like a set for a movie, and all the buildings are so intricate the kinda look like miniatures. There are really great shops everywhere, i'm sure I can get some good shopping done... and of course there is the historic part too. We went to the church of St. Nicholas, which was built in 1320. They say Columbus must have worshipped there. Oh, also the tap water is contaminated in Galway, so we have to use bottled water to brush our teeth. Yum. So thats all for now, we'll be going out for a pint soon and dinner after!... read more
