so i lost an entry somehow, so some of my thoughts are lost forever, but ill give a quick recap of what i can remember jers better now and had hives after he stopped antibiotics but hes better now. From Glasgow we went to the bus stop to goto Belfast but it was sunday and all the busses were full so we stayed in Glasgo for 2 nights and used it as an opportunity to go on a highland tour, and to stay somewhere with a bathtub (hot bath == sooo nice). On the highland tour the tourguide was very scottish and he had to talk slowly to us (made me feel a bit dumb) and the other 6 people on the tour were all from America, and in a bad way, Jer and I pretty ... read more

I'm not one that likes dictating the events of the day or describing the possibly mundane things one would do in a day - that's essentially what teenage blogs are all about. Sometimes I wonder if they ever realise their lives are terribly dull, myopic, and contained! Who actually cares what you had for lunch and in reading back many years down, does it matter if it were Sushi or Cabonara?! But at the request of many friends who seemed sincere about knowing honestly how things are here and how I'm getting along, here's a mundane blog of the things I see, have done and might do. The one for personal reflection still remains but this is in supplement of the more mundane. Hopefully, it'll not be as mundane as some of those I read. I ... read more

We woke up to a beautiful sunrise this morning as the ship glided into Cobh harbor. The town looked pretty in the morning light and we laughed as we passed a bunch of young guys up on the hill, swaying arm in arm, singing at the top of their lungs, trying to get the attention of the ship’s passengers. We enjoyed our breakfast on the verandah in the cool, fresh air. It was shaping up to be a lovely day. We disembarked and quickly found our private driver guide for the day, Kevin, from Butler’s Buses. After greetings all around, we headed for Blarney Castle. On the way, Kevin filled us in with information about the town of Cobh and County Cork. Cobh was the last place the Titanic stopped before making her fateful crossing across ... read more

Through my music course, I have had the opportunity to become acquianted with many phenomenal Irish musicians that I probably would not have heard of otherwise, so I've decided to share the wealth! Emer Mayock is a fantastic flute/uilleann pipes/fiddle player and composter from Co. Mayo. I got to see her in a concert on 14th September at the Ionad Cultúrtha in Baile Mhúirne with another wonderful flautist, Jean-Michel Veillon, I believe of Brittany and Donal Siggins on guitar and mandola. You can visit her site to listen to some of her music. I like 'Nearly Blue' from the playground album. Lúnasa! I believe I wrote about the concert of their's I went to weeks ago. They are a fantastic group and I haven't yet gotten tired of listening to their album. Th... read more

We woke up to a rainy morning, but Captain Thor reported that the day would clear up by afternoon, during his daily weather report from the bridge. We hopped on the first ship shuttle bus into the center of town, and the driver was nice enough to drop us off at O’Connell Street and the River Thames, where we planned on joining the first double-decker hop-on hop-off bus tour of the day. The bus ticket office was closed when we first arrived, so we had a cup of coffee at the McDonald’s next door. We got a kick out of the T-shirts the workers wore that had different sayings about how they were faster than the worker on the other line. This also provided a nice, dry place to sit until the office opened at 9:00 ... read more

Today was the final day of my early start music course. *sigh* I am not at all happy for it to be over. This means that the actual semester will start, and I'll have to go to real classes. That said, I think I took more notes in these four weeks than I have taken in any other course. I learned so much about music in general, 'Irish' music in particular, and innumerable bits of very specific information. What is Irish music? so our prof asked today in class...and I thought I'd write a little about it. First of all, there is no one Irish music. There are Irish musics, varying from a sean nos singer to a ceili band to a Limerick rapper to a jazz sax player...ad infinitum. The musics of Ireland are like ... read more

Hello! I'm finally settled into life at University College Dublin, so I was able to take a few minutes to upload some pictures for you! Mom flew back last week and I miss everyone already but it seems like time is going by so fast because I've been busy day and night. I have met so many great people from around the world- Germany, France, USA, Belgium, Austria, Botswana, Spain, the Netherlands, England... to name a few. My housemates are wonderful girls so I am excited to be living here! While my mom was here, we went all over Dublin, and travelled to the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast, and North to Malahide, and to Galway and Wicklow, which were all breathtaking. After my mom left I went with a group of friends to ... read more

Having come to Belfast to work, I have been blessed to form friendships with two wonderful Aussie girls who have been an endless source of fun and entertainment since my arrival here. I have turned to my girlfriends Claire and Nadia for dinner dates, chocolate fests, tea and coffee hits, movie marathons and the occasional bit of outdoor exercise (though the latter would be definitely be in the minority of our time spent together). After many, many hours spent hanging out at each of our various shabby apartments in the same accommodation complex where we all live, we decided it was time to venture further afield for a weekend of all things girly. Being only two hours south of Belfast, Dublin is the obvious choice for a weekend away. And so to Dublin we went! Having ... read more
