Two years ago I saw photos of this place and felt a strong affinity to it. I was simply drawn to its majestic towers. I think I must have been here in a past life or something. Today my hope of visiting it was realized. We had a spectacular guide take us through the Rock of Cashel and explain its importance. I took many photos and really enjoyed seeing this magnificent site. Then we made the grueling drive to Galway for the arts festival there.... read more

Happy Fourth of July! On Good Morning Ireland this morning (Ireland’s equivalent to Good Morning America, we think) they had the owner of a Dublin Restaurant called Captain America cook some “traditional” American food. He made hamburgers (okay) topped with grilled pineapple and thousand island dressing (???) I guess it’s a matter of interpretation. We both slept well last night. Mark was beat and we had “a bit of a lie in” as they would say over here. We got up about 8:00. Mark looked out the window and said, “It’s raining!” Well okay then! We fixed our continental breakfast and got ready to get to it. When we opened the door to our room, Yvonne had taped a note to our door: “Mark and Beth, please don’t forget to come get the parking pass before ... read more

...cause I'm leaving on a jet plane...Oh yes they are all packed, All the classics onto that little ipod of mine! John Denver's "Leaving On A Jet Plane", Willy Nelson's "On the road again", Daft Punk's "Around The World" and... Jinx Lennon! (Thanks Rachel...you are determined that I'll never forget Dundalk! :-) ) So with the ipod, a few T-Shirts, the trusty... (soon to be crusty!) shorts and half a ruksack full of medicines. (I have been jabbed and prodded and given enough tablets to bring with me to supply a hospital for the best part of the year!). I am finally ready to hit the road. For anyone that asked me and didn't get a straight answer here is a rough idea of where and when I plan to go places. But you didn't get ... read more

Drove North about an hour from Cork to see Cahir Castle which is from the year 1142. We then drove to the Rock of Cashel which is a fortress from the 4th century. We attempted to see a Castle Ormond from the 14th century. Although we did “see it”, I did not notice in the tour book that it was not open until June. We then drove into Waterford and checked into our hotel. We drove to two beach towns, Dunmore East and Tramore and had dinner at our hotel’s pub. ... read more

Today's entry is short. We headed out today to see the Rock of Cashel. Exactly what we wanted to see on this trip; an ancient castle ruin surrounded my beautiful countryside. The only bad thing was that by the time we got there it had started to rain, though it was more of a heavy misting or sprinkle (if that makes any sense). But the really bad part was the gusts of wind, especially once we reached the Rock and walked around the Church. There were times that I could literally feel myself being blown away (and for me, that is saying a lot). We took a lot of pictures; quite a few I think will look good in black and white. Afterwards, we had a nice shepeards pie in one of the local Cashel restaurants ... read more

Labor Day weekend found me in Ireland. A few weeks before, I was moseying around the Ryan Air website, just out of curiousity, and the next thing I knew, I had a ticket. The return trip cost 1 p. Convert that to American dollars, and that makes it a whopping two cents. I have no idea how these airlines stay in business! They get you on the taxes, but still. I had paid for it almost even before checking to see if I was free that weekend. (Like my grandmother who had laying hens and still bought eggs at the store because they were on sale. Hey, you can't fight genetics!) The ticket to get there was a slightly more expensive 12 pounds 99 pence. So either England really wanted me back, or Ireland really wanted ... read more

It ended up being Caher because the caves tour was in another hour and also everyone was worried that, because of the rain, the caves would be dripping wet. (more than likely) Caher Castle (1142) offers tours but we chose to just wander around and feel the atmosphere of the place. It is a very impressive river -island castle and if ever you wanted to see a castle on a rock, surrounded by a moat, (well river actually) full of turrets, towers, massive walls, defences and dungeons, this is it. The inside has not been done up like nearby Rock of Cashel and is smaller but it wins hands down for allowing you to wander around freely and ... read more

Trip to IrelandQuicker to get to india Got the boat from pembroke over to rosslare. Crossing was fine but journey in all took about 11 hours. Nice! When we were there car kept breaking down. It makes the journey back an exciting prospect really. Didn't get up to much while we were there - mostly seeing family and mates. Did manage to drop down to tramore for a surf. Well not really a surf - a paddle in the sea fighting the 1/2 foot waves. NAother strike as well over - nurses this time. At least they have a reason to strike - unlike the navy who were complaining a few months ago about the time they were spending at sea. Seriously, they were suing the government because they had to spend too much time at ... read more
