We had reserved catered breakfast for Sunday morning—John and Teresa, owners, will cater dinner or breakfast if you reserve it in advance. One portion of the group had reserved dinner Saturday evening and all of us had agreed on breakfast Sunday morning. It was excellent—great tea, especially! To get started on the touring, we went to Cahir, to the Castle, after 11:30 mass—no music, none of this singing and messing about. Good, thoughtful Homily and out of there in 30 minutes. Lovely church, beautiful windows. Mike and I arrived fairly early (faster walk into town than we expected), took a seat and looked at the beautiful surroundings. A few people arrived here and there and about 11:27, with a 'whoosh' (figuratively), the church filled with people. Drove to the town of Cahir, thinking to see the ... read more

So that Mike could see the countryside on the trip south, we took the train from Dublin. We had originally thought to alight at Limerick Junction, the closest stop to Bansha Castle, and rent a car in Tipperary, a short cab ride from the train station. However, a couple of weeks before our trip, Enterprise bought the local car rental company, Dooley, and closed the office in Tipperary! Luckily, we figured this out ahead of time, even before we'd purchased our train tickets. One of the other people staying at the Castle did not learn of this until she tried to pick up her car there! She ended up getting a ride to Shannon Airport and renting a car there. So, we had purchased train tickets to Cork and reserved a car at Hertz in Cork. ... read more

Ireland is a country that revels in its history. Traditional music is everywhere, houses that don't fit the style of the past are rare and events such as a battle between a king of another country and his father-in-law that happened in the 1600s are celebrated with fervour in some quarters. Lough Gur is a place where you can be nice and close to really old Irish history. Lough Gur is the site of one of the earliest known settlements on the island of Ireland 6,000 years ago. There is physical evidence of occupation from the Neolithic time, through the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Early Christian and Medieval to today. The site allows archaeologists, historians and the rest of us ordinary mortals the opportunity to see and hear about how our forebears have gone about addressing ... read more

I could see "the Rock" as I drove into Cashel. There were lots of tourists there with me. The centuries of neglect are evident but the buildings are being restored. Our guide told us that the Bishop and his crew left because the buildings were too hard to keep warm. I believed him as the cold wind whistled through me. Some visitors from the continent where it is already hot, were, unfortunately for them, in their summer gear. The town itself is charming and about 2000 people. I had the worst cup of coffee there on the trip so far. My heart sank when I saw grated chocolate on top. I checked out what was supposed to be the South Tipp Geneological Society near the Rock. The Bishop before the current one obviously knew the value ... read more

Staying in a small apartment which has been built above a garage. Near Horse and Jockey (!) and not far from Thurles--pronounced Tur-less. My change fro 5 Euro when I bought an apple and a choclate bar was "tree turty". A young bloke I got talking to had just completed a Community Studies course in Thurles and wanted to get into "yute work"--nothing to do with Holdens. You get the idea. Countryside is pretty, rolling country and very green. Dairying is the main type of agriculture and the not unpleasant smell of dairy cow shit hangs in the air where I am staying. I have a VW Golf which is ideal, the roads are good to adequate and traffic is pretty light. Signage is good and I am finding my way around. Went straight to Ballycahill ... read more

We have an 11 o'clock appointment at St. Nicholas Church in Carrick-en-Suir, County Tipperary, but it may be difficult to make it; my back and hip are in total spasm and every movement sends pain down my left leg. At breakfast, (I wouldn't miss that would I?) Ann-Marie gives us the name and location of her physiotherapist and we make a small detour to see if I can get an appointment. The receptionist is wonderfully kind and takes our phone number in case she has any cancellations or can fit me in. We are now going to be a bit late and John is doing his level best to make good time on the twisty and narrow road when we run into 1) roadwork, 2) an accident blocking the road, and 3) a train gate down ... read more
