Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

I'm finally able to write about my last two days in Ireland...Nearly two months after my trip. But I so want to finish sharing, if only to have it all recorded somewhere. Since I am covering so much time in this entry and since it will be my last one I'm going to try to make it as abbreviated as possible in certain areas. To start...On our last day with the tour we departed Galway at 8:30 in the morning and set off with Tommy for our cross-country trip. Our only stop of the day on the bus was at Clonmacnoise [View Full Entry]

In August I went over to Ireland for Sean and Breda's wedding, flying to Dublin, over-nighting in Monaghan and then Enniskillen. I also had 4 nights in Dublin and took the opportunity to wander the streets of the city where I spent almost ten years of my life. It was nice to visit some of my old stomping grounds and see the changes that the Celtic Tiger economy had wrought. I don't know if the sum of all parts is better than when I went to college here but there are many aspects of the city that have improved beyond all [View Full Entry]

Day One: Arrival into Ireland We are starting to realize that over here in Europe, things just usually don’t go as planned, that’s just how it is. For instance, our flight with Ryan Air was supposed to depart around 5:30pm out of Gatwick Airport, so Mitch and I arrive about 2 hours before to compensate for traffic or anything of that sort. Check in went smoothly, but Ryan Air doesn’t give the actual gate number because they post it on the monitors about an hour before boarding. Naturally, Mitch and I decide to go through the shops to kill time. Well [View Full Entry]

9-29-08 to 10-3-08 (by Becky) Leaving Rathdrum by train, which takes us to Wexford, by way of the coast is a fabulous ride. Trains are by far the most comfy of carriages. We met Betty on the train & she knows Terry (the cartoonist) from England, living in Rathdrum. She was very nice but seemed uncomfortable around us. The light in her eyes was missing - I wonder about her life? She introduced us to her man friend who was a character, but sweet. She asked me if I wanted to come live with them - Wow!! I was quick [View Full Entry]

Laragh Ireland
Laragh Ireland
Riverside B&B
(by Becky) We were nearing the end of our stay in Glendalough when we began exploring where to go next. Lettie shared that she saw a house, third on the left, on the road to Rathdrum in a village called Laragh (Lara). She informed us that it was there that the energies were calling us next. As she experienced the energies we were able to connect as well and get a sense of what we were looking for. Terry & I walked into town and directly to this house, which was there and a B&B, just as she said. As [View Full Entry]
