Flying to Europe from the East coast is so easy! Flight time is less than six hours, and it can be a direct flight; no long layovers wasting time walking through airports just waiting for the second or third flight to board. One stop when you're at the airport and that's it. Much less stress, and the likelihood of seeing your luggage again is infinitely increased. This must be part of the reason why more people from our part of the world don't visit Asia, or Africa, or China. Long air travel can be nerve-wracking. But going from BOS to DUB was simple, even somewhat enjoyable. My flight left Saturday night and arrived in Dublin early-ish this morning. I even slept a bit on the plane, always a pleasant surprise. My seatmates were quite peacefully friendly; ... read more

Day 01 Today we expected to be a long day, since leaving mid-day, and traveling for 14 hours or more, would be tiring, even for young folks. Well, we started on April 29th, going to the airport around noon, and getting to Dublin around noon on April 30th. We switched planes in Frankfurt, to make our final destination in Dublin. The plane ride was on the large Airbus 380. We had a dinner, and a breakfast served. Not much sleep, but some. While not individually plated by a chef in the galley the food did not taste like airplane food that I was accustomed to. We met my brother and his wife at the airport. We coordinated flights to be there close to each other. The initial wait time was going to be around 30 minutes, ... read more

We made it! We left Saturday morning at 6. We travelled 9 hours by ca, made it through airline security and boarded a plNe for an overnight flight! We were tired, but arrived at 7 am Dublin time. (Around 2am for you guys) and hit the ground running. The most perilous part of the trip was Craig getting used to driving on the left side of the road in narrow city lanes and traffic, but he did it! Today was the Guinness store house and exploring Dublin. Guinness was a part of Craig’s long time bucket list goals! He loved it! We walked a lot in the city and saw lots of cool stuff! I am typing from my phone today , so I will mainly just post pics for today. Tomorrow we see ode of ... read more

What a lovely day! We woke up gradually, knowing that it was Sunday in ireland and nothing much would happen before 11am. We went to brekkie in La Terraza and found that there were actually thousands of bike riders in the streets outside for the annual Great Dublin Bike Ride. We then retired to the observation lounge and read whilst our suite was being made up. Just after 12 we left the ship and boarded the shuttle for the 10 minute drive to the city centre and explored the streets around Trinity College. We found an Irish Pub (in Ireland!) and went in for lunch. We had Irish stew washed down with a pint of Temple lager, followed by an Irish coffee. We then continued shopping (well, I shopped, Tom carried) until we were ready to ... read more

Today we had a day off. This touristing thing can get tiring. After a nice calm night and relaxed morning we arrived in Dublin at around lunchtime, docking whilst we were at trivia (ahhh, we came last, or 6th as I prefer to call it). They docked our ship in the River Liffey, down a little ways from their troubles-scarred post office. We had lunch in The Restaurant and today they did a Mexican theme for entrees (quesadilla, wraps etc) but a chicken stir fry for our main. After lunch, everyone was going ashore, so we did our washing! And then had a two hour nap! We’ve been here twice before and we’re weighing up what we really wanted to do/see. We had a booking at La Terraza for dinner - at night it becomes the ... read more

I met the gang at breakfast this morning - all except David & Nick who were up early and on their way to Wicklow before I got up! After breakfast Brid & Alex were going to drive me to the train station to get a train to Dublin however, I didn't figure into the plan that Pope Francis was arriving in Dublin that morning. All the trains seemed to be booked out online but we figured we would head to Limerick Junction and try our luck. With 5 minutes before the train was departing at 11:20, I was able to buy a seat (at an inflated price of course!) but then it was a quick goodbye to Brid & Alex and I was on my way. The train was comfortable, quick and had good wifi! What ... read more

I arrive back to Dublin from Belfast. As I was here already once before, and I got to look around, there was really only one more thing that I really wanted to do. I wanted to tour the Guinness factory, and to walk around in that area. With this day being my last, I wanted to make the most of it to the best of my ability. I settle into my hostel, and quickly make my way towards my destination. Not really sure how to get to the Guinness factory, I relied on a map to direct me. It was well within walking distance for me, as I am used to trudging several miles if need be. Weather permitting, this was my plan. Luckily it was not all that far. As I journeyed, all along the ... read more

I arrive in Dublin from an early morning flight from Lisbon. Although tired and weary from the journey, I was eager to set out and see what Dublin had to offer. I got to my hostel, which was decent for a three bed room, and I unpack to start my journey. I knew I was only here for one day, for I was going up to Belfast, but I had plans to come back here to finish off my vacation. My main objective was to just walk around the streets, and to see what jumped out at me. I make my way to O’Connell Street. This street is Dublin's main, as well as widest (but not longest) street, and as near to being the very center of Dublin as you can be. O’Connell Street and the ... read more

Paddy slowed as we rounded a bend in the picturesque hedgerow lined laneway and stared reproachfully over his shoulder. His meaning was clear. "Do you really expect me to drag you AND that half tonne caravan up this hill??!!!" We dutifully alighted and led him up the incline, his slow but steady pace easy to match. Ev grumbled good naturedly that it should be called a horse drawn gypsy caravan WALKING tour as we had to hop down for each up or down hill stint! But we did not begrudge our sweet natured and placid draught horse the lightening of his load. We had all of us fallen hard for the chocolate horse with white fluffy socks and blaze and the deepest brown eyes - Katy was particularly besotted and carried handfulis of grass to him ... read more

We started out day with breakfast on the Spey Restaurant balcony and then prepared for our departure from the Balmoral. After redistributing the weight in our suitcases to get as close as 20 kg per bag as possible we headed ashore to a blue line cab who whisked us away to the airport in light drizzle. We arrived more than 3 hours before our flight but caught up with some correspondence as there was no 4G reception in the North Sea crossing. Our Aer Lingus flight was a turbo prop plane which boarded from the rear so our first row seats gave us little advantage but within an hour, we were landing in Dublin At 2:00 pm. Renting a car at Dublin airport is not as efficient as many other places we have visited with a ... read more
