Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Off to Ireland! I woke up at 4:00 a.m. with a wicked burning in one spot in my throat. I drank some water, convinced myself it was dehydration and went back to sleep. When I woke up at 7, it was all over. So it looks like I am off to Ireland with a cold. I think it has something to do with 4 1/2 hours of sleep Friday night and 4 hours Saturday night. Ain't graduate school grand? I had a bunch of errands to run today to finish getting ready and then had to finish packing. The weather forecast [View Full Entry]

First, I must apoligize for barely updating the whole time I was in Italy. It was hard to find the time to post a proper blog plus the cost of internet, and when I did have time and cheap internet, I couldn't think of what to say. So, now I'm back in Dublin. I arrived late last night (check into my hostel at half past midnight) and had a bit of a sleep in today. My flight from Rome to Dublin was fantastic. Why? Because I got to see my ultimate sunset. My flight took of at about 8:20, just before [View Full Entry]

Music: Brinsley Schwarz - Feel a Little Funky <3 I came back to Dublin yesterday - I thought I'd go to somewhere like Maynooth for the day, but I didn't, and I'm so glad I didn't: Dublin was full of life, and I, rather surprisingly, felt at home once I got here again. Hmm. Anyway, there was a man, "The Winged Wizard", in a superb costume (& make-up) who gave a piece of wisdom on a little paper, which seemed to appear in his hand out of thin air, to everyone who gave him change. Yes, I did too. He totally [View Full Entry]

From the Balcony
Here's a shot from the balcony in my room at the hotel.
I needed to make a quick business trip to Ireland this week (yes, I'm actually working while I'm here!). I flew out on Air Lingis from Heathrow, for the quick 45 minute trip to Dublin on Wed. morning. We had a few meetings, and headed to lunch where I had some Irish beef. It was a blessing! No question that this was the best meal I've had since we've been in Europe! After lunch, we finished up our meetings and John drove us toward the West coast town of Limereck. John is the CEO of a consulting firm we just aquired, [View Full Entry]

Arriving in Dublin, the weather of the Emerald Isle was true to itīs stigma and soaked me from head to toe (as well as half my pack) while waiting for my friends to finish work. What happened from then on was three days of pure bliss and genuine Irish hospitality that I will never forget. My last three days were mainly in the company of Geoff Fullam and Nicola Connery - two dead set legends. From a live Irish dancing and music show at Johnnie Fox's, a beautiful hike through the rolling hills and ruins of Glendalough, a tour of the [View Full Entry]

Yesterday in our tours around Dublin (I think mom and I can give some of the tour now!!), we can upon a Canadian oasis overseas.... that's right a Tim Hortons! We couldn't believe it! So like true Canadians we ran inside (it is just a little counter set up in the corner store) and took our pictures with it. The staff said that they get a lot of Canadians taking pictures. LOL We decided we had better have a coffee...even if the cup was filled with the not so good Ireland coffee, at least we could pretend it was Tim Hortons [View Full Entry]

Today Mum and I had a lovely sleep-in, we went to the gym in the fitness centre and then had breakie. When we finally headed out we went to the information centre and booked accomodation for Galway. We then spent the rest of the morning looking at suitcases because of the London suitcase incident. We seriously spent hours doing this - Mum and her quick decision making. ;-) Finally we bought a suitcase then we went and dropped it back at the hotel. We also bought the train tickets to Galway. We then went and had lunch at the same place [View Full Entry]

First Night

The flight was long and the passport check point was quite long as well, but it was definitely worth the wait! So far, everyone I have met in the group is really nice and I can anticipate the rest of my time here with them will be great! Unfortunately I left my jacket unattended at my first pub--The Hairy Lemon--and it was taken along with my camera : ( so no pictures, but I have a couple of cameras so once the film is developed I will be sure to post. I had a great time meeting the locals who were [View Full Entry]
