So we had quite the interesting start to our Eurotrip part 3. Tabi and I were visiting with our friends Filip and Lidijia that evening before we had our morning flight to Scotland. At midnight we started to head to the airport since we were planning on sleeping at the airport since our flight was departing at 7:30a.m. On the highway to the airport the car started to overheat. When we were stopped on the side of the road it was discovered that there was no water in the car to cool it down. So Filip and I started to walk somewhere to try to find some water. We eventually found a McDonalds and since the lobby was closed we had to walk though the drive thru. Now I forgot to mentioned Filip just turned 27 ... read more

Geo: 53.3441, -6.26749Last night we went to sleep by 11:30, a bit earlier than we have been. The lodge was quiet by then; no more children were running in the halls. All seemed fine until around 3:30 a.m. when we heard a loud group banging around slamming doors and stomping their feet. That lasted thirty minutes then was quiet again. The night was okay except for that. The lodge is basic but has done a good job of describing itself so we knew what to expect. At the lodge we saw a lively mix of people. One big group of folks were all gussied up for a wedding. Another group were dressed in period clothes of peasants of the middle-ages. Lots of young people and a few older ones were rather grubby and had the look ... read more

After 18 hours of travel time, Kelsi and I finally made it to Dublin. The started with me leaving my passport at the Delta counter in Omaha (whoops!) Thankfully it was still there when I realized it was missing. Our flight was delayed in Atlanta for 4 hours. So we had a total of 7 hours to kill there. We went to almost every terminal out of boredom. We finally started boarding the plane at 10:30pm and took off at 11:20pm. The flight was just shy of 8 hours. Kelsi and I were both hoping to get a good amount of sleep on the flight over, but each only manage about 3.5 hours. We finally arrived in Dublin, Ireland at 11:30am. We took a taxi to our hotel and experienced our first car ride on the ... read more

The day before we departed on our Europe Trip we spent some time in Phoenix Park. It has a 11km perimeter wall that encloses 707 hectares of land which makes it one of the largest walled city parks in Europe. We also went downtown to the Temple Bar area for some drink and dancing before we headed off the next morning to Venice, Italy.... read more

A 9th Century Viking Town: Dublin and Norcross/Woods/Delaney Genealogy As some of you may know, we are very into genealogy and Cope has ancestors from Ireland, so he was very anxious to get to Dublin to do some research on his Irish family heritage. But, first a little tour of Dublin. Today, as with most of our trip, it is cold and windy with a chance of rain. We wind our way along the River Liffey beside the Irish Sea. There is construction going on just about every street. It makes it slow going as we head to Trinity College, our first stop. Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, Trinity College is beautiful mix of old and new buildings. Students going to and from classes surround us as we walk through the campus. This college ... read more

There could conceivably be those out there who followed this blog in the past. We stopped four years ago with just one or, perhaps, two posts about a trip to Japan a couple of years ago. We had stopped because we had arrived back in Australia and had set about establishing a base. At the time we were bemoaning the fact that we had missed a couple of countries that had always been high on the list of those we would like to visit. We made the decision to skip Ireland and Greece on our long trip because, at the time, we didn't have the time to do them justice. That issue is now being addressed. Flights to Dublin from Australia for this time of the year were fairly attractive when we floated in and had ... read more

Geo: 53.3441, -6.26749Dublin Day 6 (March 29)This is my last day in Dublin. Themorning was spent taking a tour of the 1916 sites by bus. There were at least four companies that provided Rising bus tours, and today wasthe only date on which I could reserve a spot; like the other placesin the city there was much demand for the bus tours. (020)The approach that this particular bustour company took was to have a male and a female performer act outwhat was in the minds of some participants of the Rising as the busdrove from one important site to another. We would get off the bus atcertain stops (Saint Stephen's Green, Dublin Castle) to hear whathappened at that particular site. (010, 030, 040, 050)At the conclusion of the bus tour Iwalked over to the General Post ... read more
