Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

The Ties That Bind

One of the most important things I've learnt as I've gotten older is how important it is not to take anything in life for granted. In my work everyday, I see people of all ages who (for whatever reason) are unable to do the things that really matter to them. Sometimes it can be something 'big', like being able to travel the world or speak after a brain injury, but more often it is something 'small', like being able to make a cup of tea independently or walk up a flight of stairs safely. It's hard to describe the impact 'not [View Full Entry]

Hello! The first leg of the trip is Ireland for which Saurabh and I lived to land in Dublin. I thought we would get more hassled at customs but the only undesirable occurance was that Saurabh got the dreaded "SSSS" on his boarding pass so he got the special treatment by security. Otherwise, everything was fine and my passport got de-virginized by Ireland. We arrived to a misty morning and chose to take the local bus into the city, it takes about 50 minutes to go 6 km but it was only €1.90 for a ticket compared to €6.00 for an [View Full Entry]

Greetings from the land of Leprechauns! We arrived in Dublin Ireland yesterday, after another hellish morning/afternoon of early wakeups, metros, trains, and planes. Although, we complain less, because nothing can compare to the Interlaken to Barcelona adventure you have all read about. Anyways, I digress. So Ian has already been here and done that, but its new to me! The city itself is very interesting, a great big dichotomy of hip, trendy shops and olde Irish pubs that have been around for hundreds of years. It somehow all flows together to make a unique, and completely amazing, big city [View Full Entry]

Full credit to Cathay, who checked our bags through three of the busiest airports in the world and still got to Dublin on time and in one piece!
So after scores of planes, trains, buses, tuk tuks, taxis, motorbikes, boats and plenty of long walks later, we have arrived in Dublin. Its certainly a bit of a shift, both in terms of weather (32 degrees in Bangkok down to 12 in Dublin) and culture - and no, its not just Irish folk here, its an incredible mix of Africans, Eastern europeans, working class Irish and upper class Irish ... quite the melting pot The flights (three of them ... Bangkok- Hong Kong, Hong Kong-Heathrow, Heathrow - Dublin) were fairly uneventful, apart from Andrew pulling a back muscle that it [View Full Entry]

The hard part

Well Monday morning came and the decision was made over the weekend to just make the move...im young and have a travel itch i gotta get rid of. And ive been to Rome 3 times and always said i wanted to live there...heres my chance! So i told my friends and family and went into work Monday morning...hungover :)...and handed in a months notice to both employers. I think shock was the initial reaction but they understood that i was doing it for the right reasons. I don't think i was able to concentrate in work at all and i bought [View Full Entry]

Decision time

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin
I got a phone call about a week ago from my brother Paul who was speaking to the manager of an Irish Bar in Rome and was looking for staff. I immediately started thinking about whether this was the opportunity ive been waiting on to live abroad and learn a new language. So I wracked my brains for days waying out the pros and cons and ringing all my friends for advice. Being a bad decision maker didnt help!!! I met with Declan the bar manager for Scholars pub (www.scholarsloungerome.com) in the Foggy Dew at Central Bank on Saturday and it [View Full Entry]

After a few days back at home I'm finally starting to feel human again. So that means that it's time to start sharing our photos and experiences with everyone. Hope you all enjoy it. Our first day in Ireland was a bit rough. We arrived in Dublin at 9 am Irish time, that's 1 am Arizona time. We were understandably a bit tired. But there was no rest for the tourists. One of the drawbacks of the Mespil was its distance from the town center. It was probably only a 10 or 15 minute walk. But when you've been on a [View Full Entry]

Dublin

We are in Dublin. It’s raining on and off. We’re staying in the City Manor. A fairly poor place at Gardiner Street, corner Parnell Street but it’s cheap and dry. Last night we spend at the Dublin airport. Our plane left two hours late in Frankfurt and once in Dublin we couldn’t find a bus going in the City at this time. Luckily for us we met two German girls who hat to catch a plane early next morning. They provided us with tons of information where to go and what to do and stuff. Then we put our sleeping bags [View Full Entry]

Blarney Castle
Easily the tallest castle we saw
Thursday we went to Mitchelstown Caves, a cave system discovered in 1883. There are some incredible formations down there. Unfortunately, it's a private system and they don't allow any photographs. Following that we went on to see Cahir Castle, it was also pretty impressive. Certainly the largest castle we have seen. Then, on the way home we stopped at "The Rock of Cashel", which is a huge church built on the top of this rock mound. The oldest structure on site is a round tower built in 1101. Yesterday, Taelyr and I went down to see the Blarney Castle and to [View Full Entry]
