It was nearing 3pm in the afternoon (31 August) when we arrived in Dublin airport to be greeted by grandma and grandpa. What a surprise to see them there. It was fun to get hugs and a pinch on my cheek. They say that I'm getting bigger. Even bigger than when they met me in Geneva. Before we reached the baggage collection area we already had an Irish welcome with a mother venturing: "He cleared up" ... referring to the fact that I had been crying in the plane but was then happy and flailing my arms!!! Twenty minutes of talk (rain, children, work / holidays and wordplay) later and with bags collected, we felt as though we had started our discovery of Ireland. Then our mini-bus driver to the hire car pick-up added a few ... read more

The "Gaelic Turas Ride" was awesome. I want to thank all the well wishers, supporters, and teammates that made the trip possible. Taking on a trip of this size and duration takes a lot of support from many people. Starting with my lovely wife- Karen who I know worries about me on the trips but gives me her support anyway. My team mates at work who all chip in to keep the company steaming ahead. The hundreds of people who follow the blogs, comment, and donate to cureduchenne. The Cureduchenne team, particularly, Alicia who helped me along the way. Lastly, all those that I met during the ride that made my trip so pleasant and memorable. Thanks to all for their help, guidance, and support. Over the last 8 years, I've completed 4 rides dedicated to ... read more

It was a glorious morning this morning with blue skies as we traveled back to Dublin via Kilkenny to spend our last night in Ireland. After an hour's drive, we made a stop in Kilkenny for some free time to explore. I looked up my mother's maiden name of Meany and I think this is the area that they were from. I found a Paddy Meany Funeral Home, but it looked like there were many Meany's in the area. Unfortunately, time did not allow me to do any searching. I might just have to come back here someday. We first visited the grounds of the Kilkenny Castle. We decided to forego going inside the castle to allow us more time to explore the town. As we came out looking at our map and probably looking a ... read more

Our last day in London was a quiet one. We spent the morning getting packed and updating blogs etc.We walked next door to Brown's for lunch. For once the sun was out and we sat outside. As it was a Sunday there were several families also enjoying the sunshine and the food. for lunch. I chose a fish pie while Fletcher thoroughly enjoyed his lemon sole. The fish pie was excellent and went well with the Gavi de Gavi pinot grigio. Kevin Gosper was also dining nearby and stopped by for a chat. We chatted to two couples next to us . Both had small girls who were very cute. After a pleasant couple of hours in the sunshine we returned to the hotel and watched the 20km walk on the TV.. At the track I ... read more

The ride down from Belfast to Dublin was pretty clear -once again just enough rain to be a nuisance but not enough to require a change of gear. My plan was to go straight to the Radisson Blu Airport in Dublin -unload my gear and check in then take the bike back to Kill from the airport. The bike is a lot more comfortable to ride with out my 80+ pounds of gear on the back. It took me about 35 minutes to make it down to Kill. Louise, who had checked me in back when I arrived and handled my green fuel issue on day one -was on duty. Louise was just finishing up with a new rental to a young guy from Russia that was heading over for a 5 day trip to Killarney ... read more

The three of us, Wayne, Jean and I, arrived at Dublin's airport about 5 am August 11 after an easy flight from Boston. We were concerned when we tried to call our Airbnb host (who kindly said to call early) and didn't get an answer, but soon we figured out that we had copied down his number incorrectly, so instead of calling him in Ireland, we had been calling someone in Albania. Fortunately, he answered right away when we got his number right, and we took an Uber to the beautiful apartment that we are renting from him near the Merrion Hotel and several government buildings. It has two bedrooms and a big living room/kitchen area, fully equipped. Our only complaint is of a booby-trapped toilet seat that tries to slide off the bowl when you ... read more

On Saturday, Lisa drove us to the airport for our overnight flight to Dublin via Paris. When we arrived in Paris on Sunday afternoon, we settled in for our 4-hour layover. About 1/2 hour before our flight was supposed to board, our gate number was changed so we booked it to our new gate. John struck up a conversation with a young man from Brazil, who was going to Galway as a foreign exchange student. He spoke reasonably good English but I could tell he was nervous about what to do once he got to Dublin as he needed to get to Galway and wasn't sure how to go about it. He and John were engrossed in conversation when I noticed that our flight was delayed by about an hour and this was going to impact ... read more

Einerseits ... read more

Returning to Dublin the Wicklow Mountains and Glendalough, we drove up the left bank of the Liffey, admiring the many bridges. Because of the delayed arrival of Caribbean Princess at Dublin that morning, the tour was about two hours behind schedule. The motorcoach let us off at Trinity College for some planned free time to explore. We made a dash for Trinity College Library to see the Book of Kells exhibit before it closed at 5:00 p.m. The Book of Kells is an elaborately illuminated manuscript book of the Gospels ca. 800, a must-see in Dublin. We made it in time to see it and its companions on display, as well as the Long Room, the original reading room of the library, now a museum. Afterwards, there was time to see the main campus area and ... read more
