Background: Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties.

Day 3 and 4

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin
Day 3 and 4 “One of us has to go” I now have 2 hostel stds. I named one Larry and the other one Tom, which is my middle name, but it’s definitely a, “Tom,” hostel STD. I wonder if there’s an Albanian kid on the 6th floor writing in his journal who just named his STD, Brian…. probably not. I have found 2 good uses for rain. One use is obvious, the use other is not. First rain makes everything here green, really green. From the grass, to the mold on the sides of white painted houses, to the moss [View Full Entry]

Day 4, 5, 6 and a bunch of loosely organized events chronologically thrown together in no particularly unorganized fashion. Today’s Irish tips: Unabrows are still cool here. They may be a symbol of how big your penis is. The bigger the unabrow, the bigger your junk is. But that’s just a theory I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully investigate and conclude without having some sort of severe life style change. The word thing spoken in an Irish accent sounds like thang, which actually sounds more like tang, which makes me thirsty for tang, which they don&rsqu [View Full Entry]

We found O'Donnahues, the one off Grafton street. We have a list of famous pubs to visit and raise a glass of Guinness. Thanks for the advice, Denis.
Two days in Dublin and the weather has been great. I arrived with no delays, and twenty minutes later Heather came from her long journey from Bermuda. We went to hotel to leave our bags and took off to explore Dublin. We strolled along Grafton Street window shopping and seeking the Thai restaurant recommended by the concierge. When we found it the waiter told us to either come back at six (they were closed) or go to nearby Vietnamese restaurant. We chose the latter and soon had our green curries. We found a famous statue of Irish woman, you can tell [View Full Entry]

Day 3 and 4 Travel Blog has been delayed due to the Manchester United and Liverpool match at the pub and my subsequent venture to the Jameson distillery and the home of Viagra, in Cork Ireland. We'll catch up then. Kudos to Tara for allowing me and the boys futbol time, drinking time and believing my story that i can't drive stick shift even though she knows i'm full of shit. She's very kind and understanding. Breakfast time, something about black pudding made of pigs blood. I smell deliciousness or diahrea. [View Full Entry]

24 hours of highs and lows

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin
There is nothing better than being in a foreign country and finding comforts of home. We found sushi!!! Becca you'd be so proud because we actually found several sushi restaurants AND it was still delicious. We sat at a table that had no backs to the benches or chairs (apparently its supposed to help your posture, but I felt worse after the whole experience), and sushi moved on a conveyor belt all around us. You just grab what looks good! I had an amazing tuna, cilantro, lime, and spinach roll with a wasabi sauce on top that would've brought Matt to [View Full Entry]

The little plaque that looks like a record tells you what it once was.
After most of my third week in Dublin, here are the (debatably) exciting parts: Friday was gross... or as Ingle would say, mis. It was the first day that it rained for most of the day. I went out when it stopped raining for a jaunt about town. I found the hearing aid shop that is Bono’s namesake and U2’s original studio on Windmill Lane that is now absolutely covered with graffiti. Unfortunately, it’s not U2-worship graffiti, but it’s still a sight to see. It started to rain again on my way back, so I lazily spent the rest of the [View Full Entry]

Day One Shelly, smile. I plucked my eyebrows and wolf-man ear hairs this morning. I love Irish tea. I really really love it. I find myself anxiously awaiting teatime, which luckily for me is breakfast, lunch, mid day, dinner and after a futbol match, though I’m hardly taking advantage of this. I’m already convinced that an Irish smile could charm a person into doing anything, with the exception of the airline hostess Caroline who has the most perfect upper row of teeth and hurricane Katrina teeth on the lower. My favorite words spoken in an Irish accent; “ok, [View Full Entry]

This Just In

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin
Tara just gave me a note i had written drunk at the bar. I felt it necessary to include it after i just had written about the other night from memory. From my Love Note; "I have discovered Guinness to be a tasty exceptional drink here in Ireland. It's definitely less tasty than i was made to believe, but still delicious. It's is less exceptional than Smithwicks, "properly said, "smith-icks." This is by far the best tasting beer i have ever had. I have yet to find a Murphy's Red though. I am convinced that Will Brady is watering down his [View Full Entry]

We made it!

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin
After nine hours in the air with Brian beating me in a clean sweep at backgammon, yahtzee, connect four, and crazy 8's, we are here safely in Dublin. As we started to land and we were zooming down through the rain and fog, there was a moment where it was so thick that you couldn't even see the wing of the plane. There were about four hours of sunshine yesterday and so far only two today. We spent our first day sleeping in a hostel near the bus station and our first night out with my friend Rob and his Irish [View Full Entry]
