Ireland the North 1. Dublin Thankfully the weather is getting better again and we headed south again with light cloud and 12 degrees increasing to 14. I set off with bare legs, ladies look away, but eventually had to cover them up with leg warmers to maintain some energy in my overworked muscles. The early section through Black Rock was quite interesting with a very flat beach, not unlike Morecambe Bay where a few years ago several foreign cockle picker deaths occurred due to the fast rising tide. Apparently this beach was also a big cockle picking area. Unfortunately we were soon onto a busy road with long straight sections of up to 3km long which can get a bit boring. A left turn in Castlebellingham soon had us on more interesting roads with little traffic ... read more

Just a quicky this evening. Today was a moving-on day. We collected our car, now to be known as Sherri, and headed out of Dublin towards Belfast. Rather than taking the direct route up the M1, we headed over to the east coast and harbour-hopped. We visited Portmarnock, Malahide, Rush, Loughshinny, Skerries and Annagasan before heading up the M1 for the last hour or so of the trip. They’re all lovely little places, and we had a wander around at each of them. I attempted a couple of caches, and managed to get one! We spotted a drawing of Luke Kelly on an electrical box near Rush Harbour - he does get about! We’re staying just off the Falls Rd. The Airbnb seems OK, although there is an odour of petrol as you walk through the ... read more

A fantastic start to the day - it wasn’t raining! We headed out to find the HOHO. We planned to do a complete circuit on the bus before choosing where we’d hop off, and it was interesting to find out more info about some of the places we’d visited yesterday. I wasn’t sure to be grateful or offended when Susan ordered a senior ticket for herself and he gave us both one! A lot of the Georgian houses have ornate metal ‘Juliette balconies’ around the windows. They suit the style of the buildings, and are very attractive to look at, with many different designs. We learnt that there are 2 types of police in Dublin, firstly the Garda who are the normal uniformed police, but also the Detectives who are plain clothed and carry firearms. Apparently ... read more

Sunday 5th June Our first full day. We arrived in Dublin Airport an hour late last night. That’s pretty impressive when the flight is only 40 minutes! Still, I’m sure Ryanair did their best. After a stroll around the area of our B&B, were we found a sculpture of Luke Kelly who started The Dubliners in 1962, we had a burger for supper, followed by a pint of yummy Orchard Thief for me and Guinness for Susan at one of the 700 pubs in Dublin, we headed back and settled down for the night. We woke this morning to grey skies and rain. Not to be thwarted, we headed out along the Liffey towards Dublin port. The path was built along the site of the old railway tracks, and the cobbles and concrete depicted the pattern ... read more

Started the day on time, but it was still hard to get up. Breakfast is included in our room rate. Normally that means a simple continental and maybe some scrambled eggs and sausage. Here it meant a waffle bar, omelet bar, a hot bar with everything to make your own Full Irish (same thing as a full English) and many other items. Just kept it simple and had some eggs, sausage and toast. Jerry added yogurt. I have been a little preoccupied because Tarragon is not responding well to the cat sitter, hasn’t let her pet him yet, which is a bit unusual. He is not very comfortable around other people but typically after the second day he does at least one some petting. I am trying not to stress about it, but it is pretty ... read more

Exhaustion prevailed this morning, and we decided to skip the National Gallery and sleep. Even with a couple more hours it still wasn’t enough. As I write this entry it is Sunday morning, and while we are up and in the process of getting ready, we are both still very tired. So much so, that it is prompting us to re visit the entire itinerary to see how we can make the trip a bit more relaxing, we tend to try and do way too much, and we are not as young as we use to be. Back to our Saturday. The forecast was for rain, but the turned out to be pretty nice and no rain, a little overcast but no rain. With the last start most of the day turned into a walking tour ... read more

We both slept very hard but were not fully rested, but that is the price you pay for world travel. Day started at 5:30, showers in the all-in-on Bathroom, a bit of re packing then breakfast. The breakfast choices were; a full English, a full English or a full English. It was a hard choice but we went with the full English. Otherwise known as a breakfast heart attack. Two sausage links, two slices of rasher bacon, on over easy egg, deep fried hashbrown, blood pudding (I have no idea what is really in it), beans, and toast. It was good, how could it not be, but did have a bit of an adverse gastro intestine affect (not Mexico City so don’t worry). After breakfast we were off to the ferry, a quick 5-minute walk from ... read more

Dear All Greetings from London! I’m writing as I have just returned from a short four-night trip to nearby Ireland, or Eire, or the Republic of Ireland, and plan to write three blog entries for my three full days on this beautiful green island. This is my first one. I am majorly excited about this trip, and have been for some time now. A few years ago, I joined the Travelers’ Century Club, a club for travellers who have been to 100 of their listed countries. I initially joined as a Provisional Member, which you can do once you visit 75 countries on their list. In 2020, I was about to reach Full Membership with a summer trip to South Africa, and Swaziland was planned to become my country number 100. As we all know though, ... read more

Ancient Dublin Dublin is full of history and on the heygo virtual tour today we learnt so much in such a short space of time. We were able to briefly go inside two cathedrals St. Patrick’s & the oldest Cathedral Christchurch originally 1028 & rebuilt in stone in 1170 with his magnificent floor tiles. We crossed over the River Liffey & walked down one of the oldest streets in Dublin, Fishamble Street and viewed a house, No 26, where the same family have lived over many centuries. One of the best known pubs in Dublin for traditional Irish music is in on of the oldest parts of Dublin city and one of the most enduring legends surrounding Dublin has to be that of the woman – Darkey Kelly. For generations Darkey Kelly was known in Dublin’s ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 4th February - In Dublin’s Fair City The Vikings settled in Dublin from 841 AD onwards. During their reign Dublin became the most important town in Ireland as well as a hub for the western Viking expansion and trade. Today’s tour started in the Georgian Quarter by the famous Molly Malone statue, the heroine of the famous song of the same name. Molly was Immortalised in bronze during the 1988 Dublin Millennium celebrations. It is not known for certain where the song originated, or if Molly Malone ever actually existed. According to the lyrics Molly was a young and beautiful fishmonger who sold her catch from a cart on the streets of Dublin. The song’s final verse states that after dying of a fever she went on to haunt the city. Dublin - Part 2 ... read more
