As my time on this island draws to a close, I have been jamming in as much sightseeing as possible. With only one weekend night to spare, I was insistent on heading to see the best of the West. Taking stock of local opinion, Adam and I headed to Donegal, long famous for its amazing scenery and a region about which the Irish frequently boast. Donegal town itself, only a few hours west of Belfast, is not the major drawcard of the region. Although it's a very pleasent town, it's the nearby coastal scenery that's breath-taking. A short drive from Donegal are the Slieve-League cliffs. These cliffs are 300m high and there's an almost sheer drop into the Atlantic Ocean below. Unfortunately, the day we visited was cold, somewhat foggy and rather windy. Climbing to the ... read more

I've just spent the weekend in County Donegal in a cute little town called Malenbeg. We headed over on Friday night and had a lot of fun finding our hostel at 10pm at night as it's almost as far west in the county as you can go on a one way road. After waking in the morning to find that we had a pretty good view over the ocean we headed back east for about and hour to the Slieve League which are the highest sea cliffs in Europe (according to the trusty lonely planet guide). We spent a spectacular morning working our way up part of the cliffs and also sliding down them on my butt on the way back down. Unfortunately as it's winter though we were advised not to do the hike over ... read more

well hello! Patri and I just got home, we left early yesterday morning with pablo, claudia and jorge for Donegal. I now know that brazilians speak portugese, not spanish or... brazilian. This is good! And it was neat, hearing the two languages (spanish and portugese), because theyre so alike but at the same time, not. Donegal is in the northern area of the republic of ireland, and we managed to go through north ireland (the UK) for about an hour. we had a pub lunch in elliskenny. Or.. some town of a name like that, haha! So many of the names here are of very very bizarre spelling, and even harder to pronounce. its madness. I´ve been meaning to write since last sunday, when me & whitney from work went on a day tour to the ... read more

Well so it starts...well kind of. First trip was the 8hour bus journey from Cork to Donegal. We encountered some wild countryside and sharing with farm animals was not easy but I managed to survive the trip and landed home around 6pm on Monday evening. The next few days will consist of chores around the house and a few friend visits to Belfast, Letterkenny, Sligo and Mayo. I fly out on Tuesday 25th September...Check out the route by clicking on the Map above... Till then........ ... read more

It took us a while to realise that there are, in fact, no sign posts in the county of Donegal unless of course you are prepared to hack your way through 3 foot of hedge to get at them. Our third accidental detour of the day took us nearly into the Atlantic on one side with only 1 half a mile of lake to swim across to get us to Maura's wedding starting in approximately 15 minutes on the other side. Some frantic reversing, cursing and waving at fists at the gentleman in the petrol station who had sent us in the wrong direction (not to mention some swift under-carpet-brushing of the small fact that it was moi who had lef the map behind) got us to the right town with 5 minutes to spare but ... read more

Hey Everyone, How's it going? Hope all is well at home. I've now been in Ireland for 2 weeks. The two nights we stayed in Dublin were a lot of fun. We left Dublin on the Firday morning to catch a bus to Bundoran. We had to catch the tram to the bus station and we couldn't find it so we asked a guy to direct us to the tram station. We thought we had found it cause the sign said Temporary Garda Station!!!! We all went in with our packs on and knocked on the window. A man with a uniform came to the window and Dana said we'd like to go to Busarus Station. He looked at us kinda wierd and said ok. I thought it was kinda wierd that he never told ... read more

My Irish claim to fame, my great grandfather was Michael Augustus Ward (Mac an Bhaird) from Donegal. My grandmother (Ellen Ward) full blooded Irish. Michael Ward (Bhaird or 'bard') married Mary Moran, daughter of Martin Moran (married Ellen Rogers), immigrant to Genesee, Pa (Potter County) in 1840 (before the potato famine. Genesee ended up an Irish haven. Martin was one of the leading citizens. He immigrated from Mayo County. Michael Ward was very young when he immigrated from Donegal. His father, Daniel, brought his family over and settled in Olean, NY. My grandfather who married Ellen Ward was half Irish. His mother was Sara Matilda Beattie whose father, Joseph Beattie was from Newry I guess that makes me 3/8ths Ir... read more

Okay, first things first. We're sorry for dropping our last blog entry after we got back. However, when we returned from Ireland to our new home in Boston first things were also first, and those first things were things like moving and weddings and unfortunately not wrapping up our last blog entry. Anyway, when last you heard, we were about to leave Germany for Ireland... We loved Ireland. Loved, loved, loved it. It may have been the friendliest, most beautiful place we visited. The fact that the Irish speak English helped, but the green, sheep-studded landscapes, thousand foot sea cliffs, delicious Guiness, and world's greatest bed-and-breakfasts made us want to overstay our visas. It was almost not-that-great, however. Our plan, formulated in an Istanbul Internet cafe, was to land in Dublin at night, rent a car ... read more

St Patricks day is today, incase anyone forgot, and im sure nobody did because this whole campus is covered by hung over/drunk students wearing green. We watch boondock saints, play irish drinking games, and see shamrocks everywhere. When I signed online today google popped up and I noticed that instead of the usual blue red and yellow google font, it was "google" was written in shamrocks. Because of the commercialization of holidays we lose the true meaning of them. Technology such as the internet has made the day of rememberance for St. Patrick a green drinking day. The same thing happens with holidays such as christmas, mothers day, and valentines day. I'm pretty sure mothers day is a holiday made up by hallmark to make money, along with valentines day. Technology makes so much advertizement and ... read more
